Treasures from our tradition
The confessional is a familiar setting in literature and
drama. Everyone from Doestoevsky and Shakespeare
down the line to Seinfeld has used the sacrament to
tragic or comic effect or to reveal aspects of character
otherwise hidden. All of this theater, from world
classics to slapstick, has had a numbing effect on our
own expectations, and has skewed how the culture
looks at us and our struggle with sin and forgiveness,
hope and healing. Yet the artists are on to something.
The reconciliation chapel is a place where hearts are
laid bare, where honesty is the watchword, and people
confess their deepest needs. It is also a place of
rebirth, or at least realignment. It is, like the baptismal
font, aplace where something dies, and where
something else is born. Today, although literature has
barely caught up, the place is usually not the dark and
gloomy cabinet of old; rather it is a chapel that speaks
of peace, serenity, and the comfort of a welcome
home. People in one parish were astonished recently
to see their children skipping with delight as they left
the place of their first confession. We have to wait a
bit for world literature to catch up with this reality,
but at least we can experience the joy of penance, the
thrill of a new beginning, the assurance of God’s love.

Knights of Columbus
Annual Fund Raising
Drive
Sacred Hearts Council 7309 of
the Knights of Columbus will be conducting its Annual Fund Raising to
Benefit People with Intellectual Disabilities, right here in our
own community on the weekend of October 11th and 12th. The
Council would appreciate your support in any form. All the
funds raised stay in Orange County and are used (along with
Catholic Charities) to fund a week long Camp ReCreation and
four three day mini camps. At each camp every client is accompanied by at least one certified buddy and counselor thru a day
beginning with morning Mass, classes to improve social and
physical skills, skits and plays and yes some pool time. All of
these efforts and activities have as their basis sound Catholic
teaching. For their care givers and loved ones this is the only
respite they get from the 24 hour per day 7 days a week care
that each of the of their loved ones require. Please be generous.

"Lần hạt Mân côi từ bao năm tháng đã là tỏ lòng kính mến
Ðức Mẹ. Thực hành này đã có một chiều sâu mới trong
thời chúng ta. Ngày 7 tháng 10 năm 1571, một thuyền
đoàn Kitô Giáo gồm 206 chiếc thuyền với 80 ngàn người
do thánh Giáo Hoàng Piô thứ V tổ chức, và do Don John
của Áo Quốc lãnh đạo đã quyết thắng thuyền đoàn của Thổ
Nhĩ Kỳ Hồi Giáo với 320 chiến thuyền và 120 ngàn binh sĩ
và người chèo tù nhân Kitô giáo của Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ trong
vịnh biển Hy Lạp. Một lần nữa, đoàn quân Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ
Hồi Giáo không chế ngự được đoàn quân Kitô giáo Âu
châu. Trong trận hải chiến này, nhóm Mân Côi Rôma đã
lần chuỗi Mân Côi để cầu thắng cho Hải đội Kitô Giáo
trong nhà thờ Ðức Bà. Khi tin đoàn thắng được loan ra, ai
ai cũng nhìn nhận đó là sự bầu cử của Ðức Mẹ. Ðức Giáo
Hoàng Piô thứ V thuộc dòng Ðaminh rất sùng kính Kinh
Mân côi đã lập ra lễ Ðức Bà Toàn Thắng để đánh dấu sự
chiến thắng nói trên. Về sau lễ này được đổi ra là lễ Ðức
Mẹ Mân Côi mà Giáo hội vẫn giữ vào ngày 7/10 mỗi năm.
Khi người ta lần hat ở các đám tang đêm trước ngày chôn
cất, người chủ sự thường nhân cơ hội dể đọc hết 150 kinh
Mân côi, các Sự Vui, Sự Thương, và Sự Mừng, với kinh
mở đầu cho lễ Ðức Mẹ Mân Côi. Ðó là tóm tắt đầy đủ nhất
của cuộc đời Mẹ Maria và Chúa Giêsu Con Mẹ. Mặc dù
Ðức Mẹ trao chuỗi Mân Côi cho thánh Dômincô không
được coi có tính cách lịch sử, nhưng sự phát triển của kinh
nguyện này là nợ lớn đối với những đệ tử của thánh
Ðôminicô.

Reflexionemos sobre la Palabra de
Dios
Como católicos estamos invitados a “venir a la fiesta” en momentos significantes de nuestra vida. Los bautismos, las primeras comuniones, los matrimonios, las ordenaciones y las
exequias normalmente se celebran dentro de la celebración de
la Eucaristía. La ropa que nos ponemos –desde la vestidura
bautismal hasta el sudario, desde el sofisticado atuendo de
bodas hasta las sencillas albas blancas– refleja nuestro compromiso bautismal de ser fieles a Cristo hasta que lleguemos
al banquete celestial que nuestras celebraciones eucarísticas
anticipan. Todos están invitados al banquete. Todos están
invitados a revestirse de Cristo. No todos responden a la invitación.
A menudo se ha hecho la pregunta de lo qué pasaría si una
mañana de domingo, mientras oramos como siempre lo hacemos para que Cristo vuelva de nuevo, él se presentara ante
nosotros. ¿Iríamos a su fiesta? ¿O acaso preferiríamos nuestra
pequeña reunión privada en vez de la enorme multitud de
personas que en realidad no queremos conocer? ¿Nos encontraría con la vestidura de la fidelidad que se nos dio en el Bautismo? ¿Dónde estaríamos en “ese día”?
