Memorial Baptist Church
to Host
Noted Christian Artist
Dallas Holm…
A pioneer, a forerunner, and a legend – Dallas Holm is an
icon of Christian music. Though he never feels comfortable
with such descriptions, Dallas testifies that, “Through God’s
grace, I’ve been a part of the Christian music ministry for a
long time.”
Dallas has earned his influence in today’s Christian music
throughout 43 years of writing, singing, and ministry in some
5,000 concerts in every state in the USA; as well as many
countries abroad. His recordings have garnered gold records, multiple Dove awards, Grammy nominations,
number one songs; and have earned him a spot in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. During his travels, Dallas
speaks and teaches about what God has taught him in his musical ministry journey.
Holm’s creativity and diversity offer a wide variety of musical genres, from inspirational to blues, from country
to reggae. Whatever the style, it all points to Christ and the Cross. Songs like “Rise Again”, “I Saw the Lord”,
“Here We Are”, and “Before Your Throne” remind us that it’s all about Jesus. Holm’s songs focus on Jesus’
life, death, and resurrection; and His desire for intimate relationship with us.
God has used Holm to shape the landscape of today’s Christian music. Greg Long of Avalon says, “I
rededicated my life to the Lord at a Dallas Holm concert.” Dallas has touched the lives of such influential stars
as Steven Curtis Chapman, who says, “He’s still a hero to me.” Twila Paris, who opened for Dallas Holm &
Praise when she was a fledgling artist, remembers his album, For Teens Only (1971) as the first contemporary
Christian recording she heard.
Dallas says, “When people come up to me after a concert and tell me they’ve given their life to the Lord during
the concert, I’m humbled and amazed.” Letters pour in from around the world, telling of marriages saved and
lives changed. Comments which keep Holm focused, fresh, and committed to his calling are those which
express how God used him to save their kids; or, as kids often write, to save their parents.
His family; and his role as husband, father, and grandfather, take precedence for Dallas. “If I reached the
whole world, but lost my own family, I’d consider myself a failure. Early on, I set a priority system that put
God first, family second, and ministry third. If I’m not the husband and father I need to be in my own home, I
have no right to proclaim truths of the Kingdom to others.”
This arrangement has worked well for Dallas and Linda since their marriage in 1971. They now have two
grown children, Jeffrey (his fishing buddy) and Jennifer. Jennifer and her husband, Jason, have two children,
Jacob and Sophia. Holm says, “I was my son’s age when I started in full-time ministry. Now I have
grandchildren.” He and his wife, Linda, enjoy traveling together to his concerts across the country.
Dallas is quick to point out that, “It’s been a remarkable journey, yet it hasn’t all been easy. When people
hear my music or see me on TV or in concert, they don’t realize those are just moments in a life. I’ve had
struggles, heartaches, and disappointments, just like everyone else. Linda has fought an ongoing 19-year
battle surviving cancer. But Christ remains preeminent in all things. No matter what has happened, what I’m
going through now, or what I may endure tomorrow – nothing can separate me from the love of Christ.”
Dallas Holm grew up in Minnesota. In 1965, at the age of sixteen, he was pursuing a musical career in local
rock bands. Dallas remembers, “One night the pastor of our church sat down and talked with me about my
life, my goals, and Jesus. On October 17, 1965, I committed my life and my music to the Lord. I’ve never
looked back.”
After Bible College and a short stint as a youth pastor, Dallas joined David Wilkerson in his youth crusades in
1970. He traveled and ministered with Wilkerson for ten years. During that time, he formed Dallas Holm &
Praise in 1976. Dallas says, “It amazes me that, even with such turnover in the Christian music industry and
such diversity within the church, God keeps this ministry effective year after year. I love what I do not more
than ever and consider it a privilege to be a co-laborer with Christ.”
Dallas reminds us, “In Chariots of Fire, Eric Liddell said, ‘When I run, I feel God’s pleasure.’ I say, when I
write, sing, and play these songs, I feel His pleasure.”
Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 12, 2014, invite your
family and friends, and plan to join us as Dallas Holm leads us in
worship and praise here at Memorial Baptist Church.
Welcome, Autumn...
Autumn...
“Autumn is easily my favorite time of the year. The
days have cooled down, the leaves have turned, and
the world is busy preparing herself for winter. There’s
something magical about the clear, brisk days; the first
smell of the woodstove or the fireplace; the first frost;
the sound of the Canadian geese overhead as they
pass through on their way south; the canning of the
late fruits and vegetables; the pumpkin and cider
stands on the roadways. School has started, and
there’s a newness in the air, even though the season is
the precursor to winter. Somehow, the world knows
that winter is necessary, and the long preparation for
the cold of winter – the preparation which is autumn –
is a beautiful, necessary part of the world.”
~ author unknown
“Why is it that so many of us persist in thinking that autumn is a sad season?
Nature has merely fallen asleep, and her dreams must be beautiful,
if we are to judge by her countenance.”
~ Samuel Taylor Coleridge
“I cannot endure to waste anything as precious as autumn sunshine by staying in the house.
So I spend almost all the daylight hours in the open air.”
~ Nathaniel Hawthorne”
“Daniel answered, ‘Blessed be the Name of God forever and ever! For wisdom and might are His!
He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and sets up kings. He gives wisdom to the wise
and knowledge to those who have understanding! He reveals the deep and secret things;
He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him!’”
~ Daniel 2:20-22 Amplified Bible
Children’s
Christmas Play Rehearsals
& Time Change!
Attention, children and parents! It is time for rehearsals
to begin for this year’s Christmas play! Rehearsals will be
held on Sunday evenings, beginning this month. Please
note the change in the meeting time for Children in
Action…we will meet at 5:30 p.m. each Sunday evening.
This year, the children’s group will present the actionpacked musical, Christmas in Egypt! Using the Holy
Family’s flight to Egypt as historical background, the
author Kathie Hill explores the possible relationship that
Mary, Joseph, and the Christ Child might have had with
their Egyptian neighbors. In the author’s own words, she
describes this musical as a different, but creative,
approach to the Christmas Story, which serves to give
children a glimpse into Jesus’ life beyond the manger.
The kids love wearing the Egyptian garb, and the
characters of the Pharoah, the Herald, and the Belles of the Nile are simply hysterical! Kathie Hill describes
this as one of her favorite musicals which she has written…so funny, and yet so tender. This is a musical
which will be thoroughly enjoyed by all ages! Even the most stoic or skeptical adults will learn to see
Christmas through the eyes of a child.
Directors Nancy Cagle and Julia Farris relate that help will be needed with costume pieces for this play. They
say, “If you can sew, our characters need you!” There are many opportunities for adults to volunteer their
assistance with the production of Christmas in Egypt…ranging from costume crafting and set construction to
meal preparation. If you have questions, please contact Nancy or Julia, who will soon share the date for the
production of the play. Remember that our annual Soup & Pie Fellowship Supper will be held in conjunction
with our Children’s Christmas Play.

Pastor Appreciation Month
Month
A pastor represents many things to his congregation –
leader, visionary, spiritual guide, shepherd, administrator,
preacher, and teacher. Because of the significant role that
pastors play in the life of a church, October is set aside as
Pastor Appreciation Month. This is the perfect opportunity
for us to honor the dedication, sacrifice, and service that
are demonstrated in the life of our pastor. We encourage
you to celebrate Pastor Craig’s leadership in meaningful and
tangible ways during this month-long time of appreciation.
We are thankful that God sent Craig and Nancy to us, a
little over 13 years ago, to serve Him together with us in
this place. Please make it a point this month, during Pastor
Appreciation Month…and throughout the entire year…to let Craig and Nancy know just how much they mean
to us. Let’s commit to lift them and their family members up in prayer, and to put our grateful thoughts into
action! Thanks, Craig and Nancy, for your service…to our Lord and to all of us!
Genuine Support…
During high school, I attended a leadership conference
with a few other students from my youth group. The
most compelling part of the conference was a lecture
about being the body of Christ. In this lecture, the
speaker told us about the difference between dolphins
and sharks. Dolphins travel in “pods”, are social, and are
involved with each other. When one of their own is
injured, they take immediate action. One or two dolphins
keep the injured one from drowning, occasionally
pushing it to the surface to breathe, while the rest form a
defensive ring around them. They constantly switch
positions so that the dolphins holding the injured
member don’t tire. The dolphins keep this up until the
injured dolphin can swim on its own.
Sharks, on the other hand, are more solitary creatures. At the slightest scent of blood, they will turn on each
other in their greed to eat. As the body of Christ, we are to be like dolphins, supporting each other in times of
need. Creator God, thank you for the lessons we learn from your creation.

Grandmother’s Chowder
(Nothing can compare to a bowl of homemade soup. Brisk fall days
are made a little cozier with this savory chowder from Dulyse Molnar
of Oswego, New York…as seen on the Taste of Home website.)
1 pound ground turkey or beef
1 medium onion, chopped
12 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
3 cups water
Salt & pepper to taste
2 cups whole milk
1 can (15 ¼ ounces) whole kernel corn, drained
2 teaspoons parsley flakes
1 cup (8 ounces) dairy sour cream
In a Dutch oven, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add the
potatoes, water, salt, and pepper; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until
potatoes are tender. Stir in the milk, corn, and parsley; cook for 5 minutes, or until heated through. Add a
small amount of the hot soup to the sour cream. Gradually return all to pan, stirring constantly. (This will
keep sour cream from curdling.) Heat through…but do not boil. Yield: 14 servings.
