Family Picnic
This year’s Annual Family Picnic was a huge success, with our “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”
theme and everyone sporting their Brewers attire, the day turned out perfect. We all enjoyed
delicious slider burgers and homemade fries
made by Po Boys from Rio, homemade brats
from Recheks in Beaver Dam, and Culver’s ice
cream in Portage.
The Silent Auction Basket fundraiser brought
Dennis & Margo Hansen
Volunteers
in $1,915.00 and the 50/50 Raffle brought in
$248.00 (Jonathan Whirry, son of Jack Whirry,
won $247.00). All proceeds went towards the
landscaping project and CHCC sign restoration. Thanks to everyone who made a Silent
Auction Basket donation, for bidding on and
purchasing baskets and raffle tickets, for donating anything to the picnic, and a special thank
you for everyone who came and enjoyed the
day with us!

RESIDENT ACTIVITIES
Car Show
CHCC hosted our third annual Car Show and Pie
& Ice Cream Social on July 30th, featuring cars
from the Pardeeville Area Car Shows. What a
great turn out we had for an afternoon of cool
cars, delicious pies made and donated by the
Volunteers and staff of CHCC, and the wonderful
music performed by Uncle Ozzie and Friends. We
also held a free Raffle, with four 31 Bags donated
by Tara Sugden of Wyocena. Congrats to the
following winners: Ginny Laing, Leticia Barrera,
Melissa Buckner, and Herb Jahn. The Quilt Raffle
winner was drawn also; congratulations to Leticia
Barrera, (it was her lucky day), who won the
beautiful quilt, made and donated by Lori Arnse
and Gretchen Powell. CHCC would like to extend
a very special thank you to all the car owners who
spent the afternoon with us, to all the Volunteers
and staff who helped with the residents and made
pies, and to the band members for keeping us
hopping for two hours. Fun was had by all!

Sweet Corn Anyone?
Who doesn’t love an ear of delicious sweet corn?
The residents enjoyed husking five dozen ears
of corn donated by Smith’s Farm Market in
Pardeeville on August 13th. Of course, the best
part was eating the sweet corn, along with grilled
hot dogs and S’mores.

Afternoon Delight
Willow Court took a bus trip North of Pardeeville
on July 28th filled with family, friends, and fun!
The family of Jack Whirry invited us to come on
out to their land and view the sights and scenery.
They helped every step of the way from loading
and unloading the bus to giving us a heartfelt
welcome, visiting with everybody, and even took
folks for rides in a Polaris around the land! They
were gracious hosts and had refreshments too!
People could reminisce about life in the country,
The Columbian remember days gone by, and made some new
friends. What a wonderful afternoon!
A big Thank You to David and Merry Larkin
for letting us have this adventure on their land
and opening their home to us. Thank you to Jim
and Kathy Lueptow, Phil and Jane Trahms, Jane
Robinson, all the beautiful kids, and Kay R. and
Mary D. for all of their generosity, time and help!
The residents were still talking about the trip days
later with smiles on their faces! Thank you for this
meaningful experience!

The Ice Bucket Challenge
ALS is the abbreviation for Lou Gehrig’s disease.
This disease affects the nerves in your brain and
spinal cord. When trying to describe how it feels
to have ALS, one man said that it feels like a bucket
of ice cold water being dumped on him. People
are challenging each other with The Ice Bucket
Challenge to feel for one minute what people with
ALS feel like throughout their lifetime. It’s about
raising awareness just like when people wear pink
for breast cancer, purple for Alzheimer’s, or blue
for Autism. Although it’s not just about money,
the ALS organization has raised $94.3million since
July 29. The money raised will be put toward the

advancement of treating and curing this disease.
The employees of CHCC were nominated by
Ashley Meyer, an employee whose uncle suffers
from ALS; to complete the Ice Bucket Challenge.
On August 29th, the residents learned about ALS
and the Ice Bucket Challenge. To our surprise, they
were more than willing to participate by dumping
buckets of ice cold water on the employees.
Brrr! The CHCC community has completed this
challenge and nomination the caregivers of Tivoli
in Portage and The Good Samaritan, in Lodi, to
their own ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. All donations

Alzheimer’s Walk
Rock Away Alzheimer’s
And the beat goes on….September 7th, 2014,
marked the 8th Annual Columbia County
Alzheimer’s Walk at Riverside Park in Portage
sponsored by the Alzheimer’s and Dementia
Alliance of Wisconsin (ADAW). There was plenty
of sunshine and good cheer for this amazing event!
Columbia Health Care Center was represented
well with our team, “A Spark of Life” with 26
walkers, and a furry 4-legged one too! Members
from “A Spark of Life” were decorated with music
notes and iPods to highlight and emphasize our
Music and Memory program! The iPods have
been so successful to re-connect people to their
past with music and feel alive again, getting their
motors running, and giving their brain that
“Spark” it needed! One could hear some singing
coming from “A
Spark of Life” along
the beautiful walk
on the levee!
Overall,
the
Alzheimer’s
Walk
raised
$26,958.30
with money still
coming in! CHCC’s
team “A Spark of
Life” raised $775
and had one of
the largest teams!
CHCC
donated
money raised from
our pie and ice
cream social, from our Car Show, in July, for the
Walk which brought in $255! The team that won
for the most walkers was Bonnet Prairie Lutheran
Church, they also took the trophy for most money
raised by a group, raising over $5000!! There was a
grand total of 263 walkers and 24 teams! Great Job
to everyone who helped out in any way, donated,
and participated! All money raised will stay in
Wisconsin and help local families struggling with
the challenges of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Your
support means more than you will know and will
help people live the highest quality of life possible!
We hope to see you next year! Let’s answer the call
for help and continue to step forward and give
hope! We will continue to walk by your side and
not let anyone walk alone!!

Micro Garden
Keep your eyes peeled because soon
there will be a micro garden on Willow
Ct. and in the main health care center.
What is a micro garden you ask? A micro
garden is a portable garden that will be
used initially to grow various vegetables
and flowers. The goal of these carts will
be that residents will plant and maintain
the gardens. These carts are being
constructed by Joshua Yamriska, Boy
Scout Troop 68, as an Eagle Scout project.
This construction project was made
possible through generous donations
from the Columbia Health Care Center
Foundation, Columbia Health Care
Center Bidwell Fund, HGN Woodworks
and Friends of Troop 68.

Influenza Season
Dear Residents, Families and Friends,
With fall and winter fast approaching, we are
preparing for the influenza season. This letter
is to share a lot of very important information
on how we are preparing to keep you and
your loved ones healthy and safe during the
influenza season.
As we do every year, we will be offering the
“seasonal influenza” vaccine. We anticipate
administering the vaccine around the end of
October. Attached to this letter is a consent
form for you to sign if you are the decision
maker or legal guardian for the resident. We
ask that you review the risk and benefit sheet
attached and sign the consent form with your
acceptance or declination and return the
consent to us in the enclosed envelope. If you
have any questions that need answering prior
to signing the consent/declination form,
please call 608-429-2181 ext. 219 or 239.
During the influenza season which is
considered October thru March, it is critical
to our residents and staff, that if you are sick,
not feeling well or have any of the following
symptoms, that we strongly encourage that
you do not visit:
-
Fever > 100 degrees F
-Cough
-
Sore Throat
-
Runny Nose
-
Body Aches
-Chills
-Headache
-Diarrhea
-Vomiting
The Columbian We also strongly encourage that you do not
visit until you are free of symptoms for a
minimum of 24 hours afterwards. If you are
unsure if you should visit please call us first
to discuss it. Keep your resident healthy and
safe.
In compliance with State and Federal
regulations, if we experience outbreaks
within the facility, which can be as few as
two residents, we may need to strongly
discourage visits on a single neighborhood
or throughout the whole facility. In the
event this occurs, we will notify the first
contact person for your resident.
We request that you communicate this with
your family and friends so that folks don’t
make unnecessary trips to visit and not wish
to enter a unit during an outbreak. During
an outbreak residents will not be allowed
to leave their unit and potentially expose
other residents. Cards and phone calls are
recommended during these times as it can
be a boring and lonely time for the residents.
It is my wish for all of you as well that you stay
healthy and safe this flu season, so please
remember to wash your hands and stay
home if you are not feeling well. Also please
consider getting the flu vaccine for yourself.

Landscaping Update!
The CHCC Volunteer sponsored a “Spring
Fling” Fundraiser back in March and the
proceeds were $1,274.92, all of which will be
going towards the Landscaping project, along
with the Foundation. Most of the landscaping
is complete now in front of the building. The
Volunteers recently purchased metal artwork
and pots to add to the landscaping, it really is
looking fantastic out front. If you haven’t seen
it yet, please check it out. Currently we are
working on the shared patio on Willow Court,
adding mulch and rocks. In the spring, plants/
flowers will be added too. Lastly, we will be
working on the front Columbia Health Care
Center sign, updating the paint and plants.

Help Us “Place Presents Under the Tree”
CHCC will be sponsoring the “Place Presents
Under the Tree” again this year. The idea is in
lieu of holiday gifts given to residents or staff,
anyone can make a donation to the CHCC
Foundation, Inc. Donations of $25.00 or more will
be recognized with a wrapped present under the
center Christmas tree during the holiday season.
All proceeds will go towards the next projects
that the Foundation will be working on; which
includes a NuStep for the Therapy Dept., a second
Comfort Care Room located on Birch Blvd., and
making the tub/shower room on Willow Court
Dementia friendly. If you wish to donate to the
“Place Presents Under the Tree” project, please
send your donations to the CHCC Foundation,
Inc., attention Dianna Lang, A.D. and indicate
this project on your check. If the donation is in
recognition of or in honor/memory of someone,
please indicate that as well.

Old Business:
1. Landscaping Project – The main landscaping
project from the Foundation is complete, costing
$3,500.00 from the Foundation and $308.85 from
the Volunteers Spring Fling. There was $3,424.07
remaining from the proceeds of the Spring Fling,
the Family Picnic’s Silent Auction Baskets, 50/50
Raffle, and donations. The money was used for
the following:
a. Statues and art work to enhance the new
landscaping - $866.00.
b. Two concrete slabs at the end of Birch Blvd,
by Hwy G to form a patio there - $1,731.26.
c. Landscaping on Willow Court’s shared patio
– including edging, rock garden, and plants –
project is complete estimated cost is $800.00.
d. There will be approximately $160.00 left to
work on the facility sign out front, including
fresh paint and clear stain. Corey Bowman,
Director of Environmental Services will be
doing the painting and staining on the sign.
New Business:
2. Car Show – The Car Show was a success again this
year with lots of cars and visitors, delicious pies,
and great music. The proceeds from the Pie and
Ice Cream Social was $255.00 and was donated to
the Columbia County Alzheimer’s Assoc. Walk on
Sept. 7th.

3. Foundation Fundraisers – The CHCC Foundation
asked all the staff here to come up with ideas
for things needed. After lots of suggestions and
discussion, the Board members decided to work
on the following projects:
a. A NU Step machine for the Therapy Dept
for knee and hip replacements. This has been
ordered already.
b. Setting up a second Comfort Care Room on
Birch Blvd in room 412. This will include
a table & chairs, pull out couch, fridge,
microwave, nice bedding, decorations, coffee
carafe and water pitcher, etc. The new table
and chairs have been ordered already.
c. Designing the tub room on Willow Court so it
is “Dementia Friendly”.
d. The Volunteers have agreed to donate a
$1,000.00 towards these projects from the
Cookie Fund.
4. October Blood Drive – October 9th from 11:00 –
4:00pm. The Volunteers will be serving Cheesy
Broccoli soup, sandwiches, and cookies.
5.Special Events – Volunteers signed up for
upcoming events.

**Please make sure if you RSVP that you show up.
Next meeting will be held on Friday, November 14,
2014 here in the Conference Room at 12:00pm. Mark
this date down now so you don’t forget, you must

Attention Readers!
The Activity Therapy Department is always in need of volunteers
to assist residents during monthly shopping trips and to
monthly trips to Ho Chunk Casino. We set each resident up
with a volunteer to assist them with getting around, finding
and reaching items, with their money, or helping with the slot
machines. It is also a great way to spend one on one time with a
person of vast experience and knowledge. If you are interested
