From the Desk of the Pastor
“What is the “Synod of Families” and why should I
care? Pope Francis has called for a Synod (church word for a conference)
on “The Family”. This is the second phase of the Pope’s examination on
family life. Last year, he asked members of the Church throughout the world
to respond to a survey dealing with issues facing families in the world. This
survey, sadly, was not distributed in the Archdiocese of Hartford due to the
retirement of Archbishop Mansell. The information gleened from the world
study is being used for the framework of the Synod.
The two-week meeting of bishops and cardinals from around the world
aimed at making the church’s teaching on family life – marriage, sex,
contraception, divorce and homosexuality – relevant to today’s Catholic
families and how the Church can respond to meet the needs of
“Families” everywhere. The pre-synod debate has been dominated by
mudslinging between liberals and conservatives over divorce and
remarriage, but there are many more issues up for discussion.
The Synod will lead to further discussions by the various “consistories”
or departments with the Vatican to make decisions regarding official Church
Teachings on Family Life, as well as, recommendations for pastoral care of
our entire Church Family. Generally these things take a long time to be
hashed out and implemented, but Pope Francis is determined to move along
with this and he does have the support of the media (mostly), so we could be
hearing about it sooner rather than later.
If you want to follow the development, visit Vatican.va or
CatholicNewsService.org or just BING search, “Synod on the Family”.

Annual Memorial Mass – Sunday, November 2nd at 11:30 a.m.

who have experienced the loss of a loved one. We also welcome
anyone who experienced a loss in the past year to join us for this
memorial.
