Many of these people are kind and would not hurt anyone. We teach in the Catholic Church about the importance of helping our brother and sister out whenever a need arises. I am always proud of the way the Catholic Church responds whenever there is a major crisis around the world. We understand that through our charitable giving, we are allowing God’s Light and God’s Love to manifest all the more in our world. We also understand that we need all kinds of help in our own daily lives, and that we become better at receiving whenever we become better at giving. Finally, we understand that all that we have ultimately comes from God and belongs to God, and that we are simply stewards of God’s abundant Gifts. Even our intelligence and our gumption to better ourselves and our families is also a gift from God. All of this compels us to be a giving and helpful people to anyone in need. However, we know that many people try to take advantage of our generosity. Knowing this possibility, we find ourselves in a dilemma every time we come across a person asking for money. The Christian inside of us intuitively wants to help, but there is also a charitable side of us that does not want to enable bad behavior. The question is, “How do we know for sure that we are helping the individual who has a legitimate need?” In talking with the staff, a man came to our door step several times and as best that we can count, his wife supposedly needed ten hysterectomies. I just recently ran off a gentleman who goes around from parish to parish asking for money despite the fact that he has a very nice car. I was told that Fr. Jack ran that very same person off when he was at Immaculate Conception. And there are many more stories like this of people who are trying to abuse the system. Fortunately for us Catholics, we have the St. Vincent de Paul Society to help us assess the needs of people who come to us for assistance. Please consider donating to the St. Vincent de Paul. Our parish gives this organization between 3% to 5% of our collection. We have yellow cards with contact information about all of the outreach programs in the Arnold area in the back of our church and at the rectory. I would ask that if someone approaches you to give them one of these cards instead of money. I would also like to ask you to consider donating to St. Vincent de Paul Society by writing a check to the parish and use the “memo” line to direct where you would like your donation to go. Fr. Huber Resolutions for Stewards 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time “And my God will supply every need of yours…” - Philippians 4:19 God really does provide for those that are grateful and generous. This is very difficult for people that don’t live a stewardship lifestyle to believe. People are skeptical and say it’s just coincidence. If you are skeptical, try living a stewardship lifestyle for just one month – be generous with your gifts of time, talent and treasure and see how God provides for your needs. 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 12, 2014 General Fund Parish Improvements Loose Cash $ $ $ 12,316.50 235.00 562.87 New Sign St. Vincent de Paul Votive Candles Arnold Food Pantry $ $ $ $ 430.00 298.50 159.57 57.00 Others $ 63.00 $ 14,122.44 General Fund Parish Improvements Loose Cash $ $ $ 8,821.00 392.00 602.80 Holy Child Tuition Assistance St. Vincent de Paul Votive Candles New Church Sign $ $ $ $ 65.00 490.00 92.50 45.00 Others $ 85.00 $ 10,593.30 September 21, 2014: September 28, 2014: 673 Envelopes distributed 242 Envelopes in collection 38 0nline Envelopes 0 Youth Envelopes 673 Envelopes distributed 200 Envelopes in collection 38 0nline Envelopes 2 Youth Envelopes General Fund Parish Improvements Loose Cash $ $ $ 12,791.00 1,717.00 542.71 Holy Child Tuition Assistance St. Vincent de Paul Votive Candles New Church Sign $ $ $ $ 167.00 467.00 133.00 590.00 Others $ 594.00 $ 17,001.71 October 5, 2014: 673 Envelopes distributed 378 Envelopes in collection 34 0nline Envelopes 0 Youth Envelopes Are you or anyone you know interested in knowing more about becoming a member of the Catholic Church? Our Auction is next weekend and everything is coming together. I have a few last minute reminders to pass along. Please turn in your 50/50 tickets. They may be sold up until the drawing the night of the auction. Just be sure they’re turned in before then. If you haven’t signed up to help, there are sign-up sheets in the back of church or just give me a call. Any help is appreciated. We could really use some help Sunday morning from 9 am to 11:30 am. We need people to help load purchased items for people and to carry items used for props and displays back to the garage. Preview night is Friday October 17th at 6 pm. This is a great opportunity to get a first-hand look at all of our great auction items. This way you can have your plan of attack for Saturday. A big thank-you to everyone for your donations, enthusiasm, and support for this year’s auction. An event like this would not be nearly as successful or as much fun without everyone stepping up to pitch in. See you Saturday, Hones Jim, The Auction Guy "Attention, single Catholic men 18-30: The Knights of the Holy Eucharist, a community of consecrated brothers dedicated to fostering reverent devotion to Our Eucharistic Lord, invite you to discern your vocation at their House of Formation, located at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama. Baby Shower for Birthright of Hillsboro. The playpen is in back of church now to receive our baby gifts and cash donations which are needed by Birthright to help women in crisis pregnancies and their babies. Diapers, coats, jackets, clothing – up to 2T needed. (No furniture, car seats, toys) This is an important event; Hillsboro is a busy Birthright, covering 4 counties. The dedicated workers and volunteers at Birthright work hard to address the many needs of women who are “choosing”, or trying to “choose”, life for their babies, and they have great respect and concern for these courageous young mothers who often face very desperate conditions if they don’t abort their babies…alienation of families, loss of homes, some have no resources at all. Like the Birthrights in St. Louis, Hillsboro partners with maternity homes, and other pro-life resources to help mothers and babies. The playpen will remain in back of church all week through Sat. and Sun., Oct. 18 & 19. No boxes for cash donations will be left after the last Mass on Saturday or Sunday, or during the week. Sat, Nov. 1, Birthright of Hillsboro will hold a dinner/speaker program with silent auction/raffles; no oral auction this year. Doors open, 5pm; Dinner at 6pm. Cost $35 per person. Cash Bar. More info at 314-808-1389. The generous support for Birthright from our parish is always greatly appreciated by them. 40 Days For Life runs through Nov. 2, and it consists of praying and fasting anytime, where ever you are, for an end to abortion during this 40 day period. Also included is the request that we become “prayer volunteers” outside the local Planned Parenthood at the corner of Boyle and Forest Park Blvd., St. Louis, for one or more hours on any day you choose. You will join with others who are witnessing and praying there and who are from parishes from Arnold or from other parishes in our archdiocese. 40 Days For Life now operates in many foreign countries. You can get updates and info about 40 Days For Life at: www.40DaysForLife.Com/ St.Louis.
