I
t’s an undeniable fact, independent filmmakers are cinematic trailblazers. These
brave men and women are
daring, bold and unafraid to
forge into the unknown, to do
everything it takes to tell their
stories, and to leave in their
wakes fascinating tales peppered
with colorful characters that
conquer our audiences year after
year.
Like the pioneers who banded
together to discover the Wild
West, independent cinema is a
collaborative process - from the
talented group of passionate
people who pour their sweatequity into creating the films, to
the crowd-funding movie-lovers
who help with financing and
finally to the appreciative audiences, who come out year after
year to applaud the final masterpiece.
Tallgrass Film Association
relies on the same collaborative
approach to create exceptional
shared experiences around the
international medium of film.
Cinema remains such an accessible art form and by combining
this medium with other artistic
expressions, we’ve had the opportunity to demonstrate how
when coupled together, great art
transcends mere entertainment,
to make us more engaged and
informed citizens of the world.
Cinema began as a collective
experience, but the advent of
technology has turned it into an
often-solitary activity. Communi-
ty-driven film festivals like Tallgrass are tasked with creating
unique and engaging cinematic
adventures for our audiences
that extend far beyond on-demand, streaming and the multiplex.

an art.)

Stubbornly Independent Gala celebrates fest’s roots
F
or the third year, the Tallgrass Film Festival features
the Jake Euker Stubbornly
Independent Gala – as
celebration of independent cinema and an homage to the independent filmmakers who make
film festivals possible. Tallgrass
congratulates all of the nominated films, which will screen
during the festival, and be followed by a Q&A with a filmmaker.
Out of 117 eligible films - US
narrative feature films made for
under $750,000 with no traditional theatrical distribution - six
were selected as Stubbornly
Independent nominees and
judged by the first-ever industry
jury, comprised of Andrea Allen
(Vimeo,) Brian Flanagan (Roadside Attractions) Jenny Jacobi
(Drafthouse Media) and Scott
Mansfield (Monterey Media). All
jurors are scheduled to attend
the festival.
In addition to the gala spotlight, the winning film and filmmakers receive a $2,500 cash
prize from Vimeo, a one-night
theater rental from AMC Theatres, and a one-of-a-kind Tallgrass
Tap Handle Award from VanChase Studios.
The winning film, as selected
by this year’s jury, is THE LIVING, from Director Jack Bryan.
Bryan will attend the festival
along with the film’s producers,
Laura DuBois and John Snyder.
THE LIVING screens at the Stubbornly Independent Gala on
Saturday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 pm at
the Scottish Rite Theatre and is
followed by an after-party at the
Emprise Bank Parking Garage
with open bar, eats and live
music from DJ Carbon. Tickets
are $25.

We, the members of the Stubbornly Independent Film Jury,
have chosen THE LIVING as the
winner of the 2014 Stubbornly
Independent Award as presented
by the Tallgrass International
Film Festival. While each of the
contenders met the award criteria in different ways, we found
that this film most successfully
represents independent filmmaking at its core: smart,
thought provoking, and well
made despite (or perhaps because of) budgetary constraints.
THE LIVING weaves a thoroughly engrossing story with
beautiful cinematography, solid
direction, and strong perform-
ances that never pander, yet
never fail to engage. The film
conveys a thematic universality
applicable to anyone who has
ever felt trapped within the confines of a fate seemingly set in
motion by one irreversible action, and yet the plot still unfolds
in surprising and unpredictable
ways.
