Local Golfers Help N.Y.
To Top-20 in U.S. Men’s
Team Championship
THE FOG OF BATTLE: Pittsford’s Tim Spitz had to fight his way through
the fog, above, as he hit his approach shot to the 10th hole during the second round of the 2014 U.S. Men’s State Team Championship last Wednesday. Hosted by the French Lick Resort’s Pete Dye Course in French Lick,
Indiana last week, the USGA’s Men’s Team Championship featured threeman teams from all 50 States, as well as Puerto Rico and the District of
Columbia, in a 54-hole team stroke play competition. The New York
State team included Spitz, a member at Monroe Golf Club and a runnerup in the 2009 U.S. Mid-Amateur, Stafford Country Club’s Jim Scorse,
named the 2014 RDGA Player of the Year on Tuesday, and Sam Bernstein
from New York City and the 2013 Ivy League Player of the Year. By the
conclusion of the third round last Thursday, the New York team finished
in a tie for 17th place overall. For more about Spitz, Scorse and the U.S.

RDGA Fall Meeting
District Concludes Busy Season With Annual
Meeting; Scorse Wins Player of the Year Title
BY DAVE EATON
It’s a fact of life for
golfers in the Rochester
area: with the arrival of autumn comes the inevitable
end of the competitive
tournament season — and
this week, members of the
Rochester District Golf Association met at Stafford
Country Club one more
time to celebrate another
successful year on the local
links.
Reflecting on a busy season — one that included
an expanded schedule of
22 events between May
and September, up from
15 a year ago — the
RDGA Annual Meeting on
Tuesday offered District officials the opportunity to
present a “state of the
RDGA”-type address for
the assembled guests, volunteers and RDGA Club
Delegates, who also voted
for the slate of District
board members who will
lead the RDGA in 2015.
“I wish to thank all the
RDGA member clubs who
hosted District events this
year, as well as all the tour-

nament volunteers, course
ratings volunteers, Rules
officials — and golfers —
who all helped to make the
2014 season a success,”
said outgoing RDGA Pres-
ident Fred Lapple, who will
become the Board of Governors chair for the RDGA
Foundation in 2015 after
serving as District president for the past two years.
Also announced as part
of Tuesday’s Annual Meeting were the RDGA yearend golfing awards, including the District’s top
honor, Player of the Year,
which went to Stafford
member Jim Scorse for an
unprecedented 13th time.
In winning the 2014
Player of the Year award,
Scorse, 49, won a staggering array of tournaments, including the RDGA
Mid-Am Championship for
a fifth time, as well as the
RDGA Match Play Championship for a record sixth
time — along with outside
titles, such as the Men’s
Tournament of Champions. Ironically, the one title
that eluded him this year
was the RDGA District
Championship Ryan Memorial at Stafford in July —
although Scorse, a fourtime District champion, did
