Hello! Bill here. We started this business 33 years ago in the
basement of my parent’s house. The four of us - Mom, Dad,
Jim and I were service people. Our background wasn’t hiking
camping, hunting or fishing. My family lived to work. But we
enjoyed helping customers find products that get them outside to
do the things they love, and we heartily shared our knowledge.
Eventually just talking about the great outdoors wasn’t enough.
A few years ago my wife Carol persuaded me to hit the trails,
streams, and woods. We had great experiences that reenergized
us to help our customers so that they could experience the same
amazing things we had.
Now we are addicted and can’t wait for our next adventure.
This year my family and I went to Peru to hike the Inca Trail to
Maccu Picchu. Our group consisted of myself, Carol, my son
Wynter and his wife Finny, our guide, and a couple awesome
homesteaders from Oregon. The trail was tough and humbling;
straight up and down at altitude. But each day greeted us with
amazing views, historical discoveries and some new piece of
knowledge. This trip added new shades of meaning to the phrase
“it’s not the destination, it’s the journey.”
At the end of four days of hiking and camping we were

exhausted and ready for a beer and hot showers, but as we waited to see
the sun rise over the ancient city from the sun gate, we looked around at
our group and at all the other hikers who had taken different paths but
reached the same destination, and realized that we had all shared this
experience. Standing on top of the mountain with all the other hikers
(dressed in the finest outdoor gear from all over the world) who had
reached the gate that day made us feel part of something larger than
ourselves.
Our guide told us that the Incas had a Mantra: To love, To learn, To
work. This was the goal of those ancient people. On our trip to Peru we
certainly found this to be true. Our love for one another helped us to
keep pushing through the toughest parts of the trail. Our desire to learn
brought pleasure when we discovered things that we could share with
others. And for me, when I go on these trips, I offer what I do best. Yo
quero trabajar con usted? We forced our services on a poor family of
farmers who were preparing Quinoa seed for this springs planting. We
worked for hours laughing, blistering, aching and freezing, and then
left. They spoke Quechuan and we didn’t. When I’m gone I hope people
around the world are going to tell stories about this crazy man who can’t
communicate but shows up and works then leaves.
We encourage you to love, learn, and work.
And if you need any gear or just a shopping adventure, please come to
Kenco. We want to be your favorite store.
The hike: One of the most popular areas in the Shawangunk Ridge
region, Minnewaska has it all. It has some hilly sections that make it a
moderate hike, but the lakes, waterfalls, and scenic views make it well
worth the effort.
At Bridge Creek: You will find dog-friendly, al fresco dining at
Bridge Creek Cafe. The Kale and Caesar salad is by far the standout star
and try the blueberry iced tea for a refreshing, not-too-sweet treat.
For dessert, head over to Moxie Cup and get the salt-away-my-sugar
cupcake to revel in deliciousness.
Kanape Brook Trail/Overlook and Bread Alone:
The hikes: Overlook is the classic LBD of Catskill area hikes,
featuring a steady uphill hike to a gorgeous, breathtaking view. It’s easy
to see why it’s one of the most popular hikes in the area.
Kanape Brook Trail is a slightly less well known hike, and the drive
out to Peekamoose is a bit long but picturesque and worth it for one
of the less crowded and beautiful views in the area. The trail itself is
moderately difficult, a steady uphill climb but not terribly steep until the
end and runs along the brook itself for a peaceful hike.
At Bread Alone: Need we say it? Order one of their fantastic soups
and get a hunk of their delicious breads to accompany it. If you're really
stubbornly set against bread, go for Bill's favorite, the baked oatmeal
made with steel cut oats. A caveat: The actual brunch is only available
in the Rhinebeck location, but if you're willing to free your mind, the
Boiceville and Woodstock locations both have breakfast and lunch
menus.
I'm sure there are plenty more great brunch and hike spots to explore
in the area so grab a partner and make the brunch and hike your go-to
activity this fall, and if you find a new favorite spot, or if you try one of
ours, stop by Kenco and let us know which is your favorite.

Have you tried Briking? (Brunch/Hiking)
By Finny Kennedy
People tend to approach the weekend one of two ways: either they
tackle it head-on, rise early, alphabetize the bookshelves, mix up batches
of kombucha, and hit the trails with gusto or they take a more leisurely
approach, sleep in, contemplate the wonders of nature and pursue the
creative arts.
However, often two such opposing viewpoints coexist in the same
household. This dichotomy could create friction on what should be a
peaceful and UN-stressful two days.
What to do? I present: Briking. The brunch and hike is the perfect
combination of productivity (exercise) with relaxation (best meal of the
day).
Here are my (totally subjective) favorite brunch/hike spots in the area:
Rosendale Rail Trail and the Rosendale Cafe:
The hike: Easy-peasy. The trail is flat but has several interesting
features, including a cave to explore and a trestle that looks out over the
Rondout creek.
At the Cafe: The menu at the Cafe is all vegetarian, and they make an
excellent (very filling) burrito. To satisfy a sweet tooth the coconut cake
can't be beat! Don’t forget to sample one of the craft beers on tap!
Minnewaska and Bridge Creek Cafe:
As fall fast approaches we start thinking of the years past: enjoying
warm apple cider from Minard Farms, pumpkin picking at Dressels
Farms with the family, enjoying the nice cool air, and watching the
beautiful mountains of New Paltz turn from solid green to a colorful
display of reds, oranges, yellows, and purples.
I remember the times spent with my family as we would go on our
first hunts as children, or later taking out a new young hunter who was
eager to learn the time honored skill and tradition of feeding your family from the harvest that mother nature has provided.
I remember my first time out hunting deer. I was told to walk to a
spot and sit down and be very quiet and not move. Not moving - that
was hard, but I didn’t make a sound. My father had taught me to be
safe and confident, so my first time ever hunting by myself on the first
morning of gun season when I saw the big buck walking up the valley I
knew exactly what to do: just squeeze. I was able to harvest my first deer.
But of course, now I like the bow a little more.
Hunting is more than the harvest of a life, but learning to share and
give thanks to those who have taught us our skills. Here at Kenco the
archery staff prefers to keep the past in the present by using bow and
arrow like those that have come before us. Although our bows may look
different, we honor the five tribes of the Catskills - the Mamekotings,
Warwarsinks, Waoranecs, Warranawonkongs, and Lenni-leneape by
not only using a bow but by using every usable part that we can from
our harvest, trying not to let anything go to waste.
As hunters, it is not only the hunt that compels us, but the entire
experience. When we take a break from our busy lives, walk through the
woods, and watch the gray squirrels chase each other through the tree
tops, a mother deer feeding her young, and the geese starting to travel
north, we learn how these animals survive this harsh world living in the
elements. Experiencing these things adds new clarity my appreciation
for hunting and my place in this world. I believe we should be thankful as hunters but also give the respect that these creatures deserve, and
thank mother nature for what she has provided for us.

Iron Clad Ranchworx gloves have got
to be the best designed work glove we
have ever seen. I was given a sample of
these gloves at a show and as soon as I
put them on I knew they were different.
Yes they feel great but so does a nice pair
of goat skin gloves, the difference is in
the construction and features. This glove
is made to work and protect your hand.
Features include roll tip fingers for excellent dexterity, Kevlar reinforcements
over really tough bullwhip washable non
shrinking leather, and my favorite is they
put a TPR rubber on the back of the fingers
and knuckles that absorbs up to 10 times
the impact. That means when you wack
the back of your hand with 400 pounds
of force the TPR can reduce the force to
40 pounds. If the price doesn’t scare you
away this is the best hand protection we
have ever offered.
