SCHOOL CLOSING INFORMATION
Dear Malcolm Public School Parents,
With the crazy wet Fall that we have experienced, I thought that the “Bad Weather”
article should probably come out in October rather than November. Although
last winter was bitterly cold, we did not have a tremendous amount of snow.
In fact, one of the two days we had to cancel was for temperature—not snow.
However, between the wet fall and the wisdom of the weather prognosticators,
I am anticipating more of the “white stuff” for the 2014-2015 winter. For that
reason, this article is meant as a review of our early-out, late-start, and school
cancelation procedures.
Listed below are the resources that we use:
1.
Our primary source of communication will be our automated message
service (EZ-Messenger). Last year we did better at “working out the bugs” on this
system. In 2012-2013, many of you received multiple phone calls each time I sent
out a message. I think we have that problem fixed. If you happen to get multiple
calls, please let us know.

Happy Constitution Day!
By: Mr. Mahoney
On September 17th, the Malcolm 5th graders presented a play to celebrate
constitution day. They presented this play to grades K-4 and did a great job! All of
the students memorized their lines and then shared information about a historical
United States flag. As an added part of the day the 5th graders had memorized the
preamble and sang it for all of the classes during the presentation.

Math Overview
By: Mr. Eichenberger
PreAlgebra – This class has just finished with chapter 1 which focused on solving
basic equations and inequalities. They also learned about graphing coordinates
and lines on a coordinate plane. They have just started on chapter 2 which will
focus on integers and exponents.
Business Math – Business math has just finished with chapter three which dealt
with record keeping. The students have been learning about balancing their budgets
which will come in handy when they go off to college or head out to get jobs. Keeping
our expenditures below our budget will be something all students need to achieve in the very
near future.
Geometry-The geometry sections have been working with Geometric reasoning and proofs.
One of these sections involved inductive reasoning. The Inductive reasoning section was very
interesting as students had to analyze numerical and shape patterns to find the next value in
the pattern. The students learned what to look for in patterns, which included the sum and
difference of numbers, if they were multiplied or divided by a certain value, and for other
occurrences. The problem which some of your children may have come home with looked like
this.
O,T,T,F,F,S,S,E,N,____. Ask your child what the answer was; and if you’re working it on your
own just start counting.
They have also looked at solving rebus puzzles. Here is an example of a rebus puzzle. The
answer to the first is a saying we use when we are happy and the second is a popular Clint
Eastwood movie.
... Fairy
...Wolf
...Duckling
PreCalculus-The PreCalculus students have been working on chapter 1 which deals primarily
with functions. They have been evaluating functions, adding/subtracting functions, multiplying/
diving them, and finding their domains and ranges. Graphs of functions have also be worked
with, as the students now have the ability to use the vertical line test to determine if a graph is
a function.
Calculus- The Calculus students have just finished working on Limits. Finding if limits
exist, evaluating right hand and left had limits, and finding where limits are continuous and
discontinuous are just some of the things they have been exploring. They have just started
working with derivatives.

Teacher of the Month
By: Student Council Member - Shi Hargens
This year Malcolm High School has welcomed Jon Squier to the staff as the new
Director of Student Services. A high school graduate of Lincoln East and UNL, his
accomplishments include being a Special Ed teacher starting in 1995 for twelve years
before earning an administrative degree and working in Lincoln for eight years. He
enjoys football, hunting, fishing and being in the outdoors. He also enjoys spending
time with his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters, Katie and Abbie. He has no plans
on being a coach, but he loves participating in sports and activities, attending current
Malcolm football and volleyball games and he’s waiting for the drama performances. So
far he has loved his transition here and says he likes everything about the school system. “The
thing that stands out is the students, how motivated they are to be good kids and how nice they are. The
way they treat the staff and each other is wonderful to see.”
Meet Mr. Edwards
My name is Andrew Edwards. This is my fourth year teaching Spanish. I am
M
originally from a small town in western Nebraska called Morrill. I have a wife,
o
Lisa, and two daughters, Braelyn and Lily. In my scarce free time, I enjoy reading,
L
llistening to music and playing the guitar. Right out of college I went to work for a
trucking company and stayed there for three years. I realized it wasn’t for me and
tr
went back to school to get my teaching certification. Several people in my family are
we
teachers and I noticed how fulfilling of a career it was for them, so, I decided to give
teac
try. Luckily, I realized quickly that it was the right fit for me. It is by far the most
it a tr
challenging thing I have done but, at the end of the day, I can go home feeling as though I
challengi
have done something worthwhile.
The students and staff of Malcolm could not have been more welcoming. My transition has been so
easy I hardly feel as though I am new here. I am really enjoying working with such a wonderful group
of students. I have fun everyday coming to work and watching them progress as they learn more and
more Spanish.
MALCOLM BOOSTER Notes
VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT – It went well and a huge thanks to all those who volunteered on
the courts and tables and in the trenches in concessions!
GATEWAY TO GLORY – Monday, October 22nd @ 7pm in Gateway Mall. Please make it a date –
Boosters will receive $1 donation per person, up to $500, who come out. There will be a costume
contest with prizes, sponsored by Boosters. More details on that later. Qdoba will be serving naked
burritos and Matt McKay will be hosting and doing games on stage. The cheerleaders will also be in
a contest to win some money if they have the best cheer. It really was fun last year – see you there!
PS – they are not doing the receipt collection, so no need to save those this year.
PROJECTOR SPONSORS - Boosters are using these funds to grow the number and value of
scholarships given. If you know of a business who may be interested in advertising on the projector,
please let Dale Sackett (937-3776) or Kristie Locke (560-1822) know.
NEXT MEETING - Sunday, Oct 12th @ 7pm in the Administration Building.
Please consider coming to Booster meetings throughout the year. The funds raised go towards
improving the athletic environment for our kids. Thanks!

Little Cheer Camp
By: Mrs. Becky Densberger
The Malcolm Cheerleaders would like to thank all of the "Little Cheerleaders" for
making our fundraiser such a success. We had so much fun teaching the cheers and
routine to the girls. We had 73 "Little Cheerleaders" who practiced on September 6th
and then performed at the Malcolm home football game on September 12th. With
everyone dressed in Husker Red t-shirts, we cheered and performed to the Husker
Fight Song. The cheerleaders really appreciate all of the support from the communityy
in our fundraising. The camp was a big success because so many individuals helped.
ed.
We would like to thank Valerie Popp, Kelie Hargens, Michelle Rivers, Terri Hoeft, Charlee
Sindelar, Sam Hargens, Hayley Densberger, Kelsie DeBaets, Sarah Behlen, Meaghan Webster, Emma
Schumacher and Hayley Duckett. Again, thanks to everyone for making this event so successful. Go
Clippers and Go Huskers!

School Website—will be updated shortly after we make a decision
If the determination to cancel school can be made the night before, I will make the call by 10:00 p.m. I
realize that this scenario is preferable to all, and will be done if at all possible. However, there are times
when the weather is not unbearable by 10:00 p.m. In those instances, the call will be made by 6:00 a.m.
the day of school. On those days, you will only receive a call if we have a late start or a cancellation.
Finally, I want you to know that student safety is our number one priority, but there will be times that
school will be in session during moderately poor weather. At any point, as a parent, you have the right
to keep you children home if you do not feel conditions are safe. This is far from an exact science, but we
try our best to balance safety with having the children in school.
Thanks (keep your fingers crossed for good weather),
Ryan Terwilliger

Raising Money for ALS
The Cross Country Team is raising money for
“ALS” in the name of a former MHS student/
athlete who has been battling “ALS” for the past
few years. We will keep track of the TEAMS’ weekly

which includes our Conference Meet and calculate
our total TEAM miles for the week. You may make
a pledge per mile for the week or make a set pledge
amount. The TEAM members will contact you
and let you know how much your per mile pledge
is the following week. We will make our donation
to the Nebraska ALS program so the funds will
stay within our state to help those battling ALS in
Nebraska including our alum. Thank you for your
support and your generosity! This is not an “ice
bucket challenge” Please make checks out to “ALS”
We will take pledges until Friday, October 17th.
