2014 Global Foodways Fellowship Award Fri. Oct 10: 11am-10pm This years’s Fellowship winners are Lila Sideras and Evaristo Ramirez Barajas—a husband and wife team, residents of Tucson, with two young children. They both come from families of cooks. Their cooking has focused on the rich culinary traditions of Evaristo’s homeland of Guadalajara, Jalisco. Over the span of more than 20 trips to Guadalajara, they have done research, conducted oral history interviews, and participated in market shopping and cooking with family members. In their Tucson home, they keep hens and grow a garden. The food menu they are offering is tied to the regional specialties of Guadalajara. produced by Welcome to the 41st edition of Tucson Meet Yourself! Visit their food booth in Jacome Plaza, on the gravel area near the Pima County Library’s entrance. COMMUNITY MATTERS Make sure to visit this area where local nonprofit human service agencies, small businesses, nontraditional craft vendors and some of our Sponsors share information and sales. It is an area we have added to the festival the last 4 years in response to the demand from the community. For a complete list of the 75 exhibitors in Community Matters this year, go to our webpage: www.tucsonmeetyourself.org or scan the QR code on the left. 2014 Partnerships An activity “passport” for kids; your guide to discover art, culture and traditions. Culturally-authentic (according to how each community defines authenticity). Fully democratic and hopeful. An important reminder: this festival is a fundraiser for all the cultural groups you see—to help them transmit their culture to newer generations. This is the heart and soul of who we are as a community: an imagined, idealized society that lasts 72 hours. Learn. Have fun. This is your festival, Tucsonans! FIND THE CABEZUDOS! Find local versions of the Big Heads, based on traditional artwork from the fiestas in Cataluña, Spain, walking around the festival. Make a donation (no gift is too small or too large) and get a sticker to help you connect with your own traditions. Maribel Alvarez, Ph.D. Executive Program Director 2014 Featured Performers Look for the PINK blocks within the performance schedule for specific times and stages. We are trying something new this year. In order to expand our investment in artists and education, this year our Music Director invited 6 groups to stage select performances. Each year we will rotate with 6 different featured acts. With this year’s presentations we acknowledge the diverse influences and traditions that co-exist in our region. According to O’odham creation stories, this is where they came to when they were led out of the Underworld; many older O’odham believe that they were made by the Creator out of the specific soil of this place. The rear guard is a place of danger, but also of honor: it represents the defense against attacks; the possibility of surviving and carrying on tradition. In that spirit, at 6pm on Sunday, we’ll say: “It is done!” CULTURAL KITCHEN SCHEDULE Sonoran Desert: Eating Well With Mesquite: Pancakes and Milkshakes (11-12) The Borderlands: Mexican Candies and Food Justice – Alegrias and Dulce de Nopal (12-1:30) Ethiopia: Krumba Wot: A Spicy Cabbage Stew (1:30-2:30) Regional USA: Café Sweets and Savories: Vegan Carrot Cupcakes; Savory Scone; Plantanas Flanster (2:30-4) Jamaica/Mexico: Carnival Cookery - Oxtail Stew; Churros (4-5:30)
