User manual PSU1
Thank you for purchasing an Edwards audio outboard Power supply, with care over the
correct use and installation we are sure that it will give m any years of pleasure.
VOLTAGE SELECTION
As supplied the PSU1 will be set to your countries AC power supply requirem ents by
default using the following table:AC chord supplied
Voltage Set
Com m ent
UK - IEC to UK plugtop
220 ~ 240V AC
Earth pin is
connected
Europe & Russia - IEC to Schuko plugtop
220 ~ 240V AC
Earth pin is
connected
US/Canada - IEC to US plugtop
100 ~120V AC
Earth pin is
connected
South Africa - IEC to 15A Round pin plugtop
220 ~ 240V AC
Earth pin is
connected
Austrailia / NZ - IEC to ANZ plugtop
220 ~ 240V AC
Earth pin is
connected
W ARNING - This should only be carried out by suitably trained personnel - lethal
voltages are present
FIRST Isolate from the AC supply
In the event that your supplied AC power chord does not m atch your countries supply
the correct voltage m ay be changed by insertion of the correct fuses into the appropriate
holders as follows:USE FU3 ONLY to select 220~240V AC operation
USE FU1 AND FU2 but NOT FU3 to select 100~120V AC operation
Voltage select fuses can be accessed by rem oving the 4 screws on the rear panel m arked
in RED on diagram 1 below, The transform er bolt located on the underside will also need
to be rem oved. The PCB will then slide out backwards, pulling the transform er with it, be
careful that it does not drop and pull or dam age the connections. diagram 2 shows how
to locate the fuses which can be found at the end of this m anual, select the correct fuse
locations as appropriate for your countries AC requirem ents and carefully re-assem ble.
INSTALLATION - FOR USE W ITH THE M M1,M C1 Phono stages or HA1 headphone
am plifiers.
The m ain PSU1 should be placed on a shelf next to but not too close to your phono stage
or headphone am plifier, DO NOT STACK THEM.
Firstly disconnect the existing plug top PSU supply from both the m ains and the rear of
the phono stage, then using the 4pin lead supplied, plug one end into the PSU1 - socket
1 and the other end into the m atching PSU socket on the rear of your phono stage - next
plug the PSU1 into the m ains using the IEC lead supplied, this m ust m atch your
countries AC outlet. If it does not or you are in any doubt please see the section above
on voltage selection. You can now switch the PSU1 on by plugging it into the AC outlet a white LED will glow behind the badge on the front to confirm that all is OK, your phono
stage should also light up.
Hum , noise and grounding
Depending on your system s grounding arrangem ents it m ay or m ay not be necessary to
m ove the earth lift switch located on the rear of the PSU1 to its alternate position. This
should be determ ined sim ply by listening. W ithout playing a record advance the volum e
control to a norm al listening level, if you can hear a hum /buzz through your speakers try
selecting the other position. Norm ally there will be a position where the hum is
significantly reduced. - A secondary cause of hum m ay com e from the physical position
of either the PSU1 in relation to your phono stage, the further apart they are the better,
or the phono stage positioning itself. Other factors that can also be critical to reducing
hum are the correct turntable wiring, turntable power supply issues, the cartridge m ay
also pick up hum or HF noise from the turntable m otor, usually this is determ ined by
m oving the arm nearer to the centre of the record resulting in increased hum . In a
correctly installed system it should be possible to eradicate all hum such that you are left
with a feint hiss. Som e experim entation is usually required but in the end all hum should
be reduced to the m inim um level possible for best reproduction
