Gwen Fazio of Hornsby kept the audience fascinated when she gave
a presentation of her colourful Aboriginal patchwork at Hornsby Central
Library on Friday 3 October 2014.

my philosophy,” said Gwen who is self-taught.
Gwen informed us of how the early Aborigines of southern NSW, and
Victoria sewed patches of hide together with kangaroo sinews. She also
told us how quilt making was taught aboard the convict ship 5DMDKwhich
carried 180 convict women on the voyage from Woolwich in England to
Hobart in 1841.
The quilt was presented to the Lt-Governor’s wife, /DG\-DQH)UDQNOLQ
This ‘Rajah Quilt’ has been preserved and held at the National Gallery of
Australia, Canberra. Its story is one of hope and persistence, and has been
a central subject of study into colonial life since its rediscovery in 1987.
Some 20 people attended the presentation including Marianne Mowbray
of Hornsby who has been quilting for 15 years and also does needlework
craft known as VPRFNLQJ
Marianne is a member of Berowra Quilters which annually makes some
50 quilts a year for our local Hornsby Kuring-gai Hospital.

“My friend Jane in Orange is a quilter, so I was interested to attend Gwen’s
talk,” said Lorraine Coglan of Hornsby.
Gwen’s brother Chris Brown visiting from Brisbane also attended the
event which was co-ordinated by Merilyn Hills of Hornsby Heights,
Readers’ & Advisory Team Leader Hornsby Library.
Gwen was born in Inverell NSW on 15 February 1948. Her parents
were Edgar Brown (of Texas, QLD) and Ileen (nee Porter of Tingha near
Inverell NSW). The family then moved to her father’s country in Texas,
which is the tradition of the Kambawal clan. Her dad worked in the timber
industry there.
“The colours in my quilts take me back to the youth of my father’s country
in Queensland,” reminisced Gwen.
Gwen came to Sydney in 1971 (age 23) on a working holiday. In 1972
she met ‘Joe’ Giuseppe Fazio of Hornsby who had migrated to OZ from
Italy in 1970. They were married in 1974 and have lived at their home in
Citrus Ave Hornsby ever since.
They have two adult children: ‘Sal’ Salvatore (40) and Andrew (38). Both
boys attended St Patricks school at Asquith and St Leo’s College at
Wahroonga.

to help raise funds for a much needed Women’s Shelter in the Hornsby
/ Ku-ring-gai area,” said Chairman John Lockyer. John who is also a
member of Hornsby Lions was a previous CEO of Garrigal Housing (now
LINK Housing) which provided social housing on the North Shore and
Northern Beaches.
The H/K Women’s Shelter is to provide temporary supported
accommodation for women in times of crisis such as homelessness and /
or domestic violence.
It is a joint project by the ‘Women’s Community Shelters’ (CEO Annabelle
Daniel) and tour local community with support by many including Hornsby
Lions, The Hive Church Hornsby, Hornsby Shire Council, and Kuring-gai Council.
“We say a big thanks to Hornsby RSL Club for donating the use of
its auditorium for the Black Tie Ball,” said Ball Co-ordinator Vanessa
Smithyman of Wahroonga.
The night includes a welcome drink, a 3 course dinner, entertainment, and
