Many young people write fan letters to their favorite authors. Read this letter from a student
to children’s author Roald Dahl. Then answer the questions that follow.
Dear Mr. Roald Dahl:
I believe that I am the biggest fan of yours in the world. You’ve probably gotten letters like this
one saying the exact same thing, but I write this very sincerely.
2 I have read “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator,” “James
and the Giant Peach,” “Matilda,” “The Witches,” “The BFG,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “Boy,” “Danny, the
Champion of the World,” “The Magic Finger,” and my favorite, “The Wonderful Story of Henry
Sugar and Six More.” I also read “My Uncle Oswald.” While I read it, my mother saw me
giggling and read the page. I was heavily punished, but was allowed to finish the book.
Mr. Dahl, I believe that you are the greatest writer who ever lived. Your books are thoughtful,
creative, and especially funny. After reading your books, I have decided to try to become a writer.
I've never been very good at writing, but you've given me inspiration.
My name is Robin (masculine form) Chan. I live in Florida in the city of Cape Coral, a
gigantic suburban expanse of houses. If you were to lok look on a map, you probably would not
find it since it’s so small, but it is directly west of Miami on the Gulf coast. I am fourteen years
old am and am a student at Fort Myers High School. I shall send you my picture.
I realize that you must have a lot of requests for this, but could you please write back to me?
If you would write to me, I would be most grateful. I would treat your letter as a prized
possession, worthy of passing from generation to generation. I ought to warn you, I am extremely
persistent. This won’t be the last letter you get from me.
If you do decide to write to me, my address is:
Robin Chan
Cape Coral, FL
U.S.A.
I again beg: You’re my idol!
Please write back.
Your enthusiastic fan,
Robin Chan
P.S. Please excuse the untidiness of this letter. I am trembling with excitement!
