The movie revolves around Cady who is new to the school system in America after being home schooled in Africa. In school, she befriends Janis. To seek revenge for an insult committed upon her by the school’s most exclusive group, the Plastics, Janis convinces Cady to join the group and collect information which they can use against them. She goes on a honeymoon to Paris alone. In her journey, she meets the carefree Vijayalakshmi and a group of three boys who help her regain her self-respect and confidence. By the end of the movie, you end up rooting for Rani and you know deep inside that here is a girl who can find her way no matter where on earth you drop her. Matching your personality with your phone | Mahmood Hossain The new Windows 10 will be released sooner than you expect. Here is a list of facts to know before you experience the new operating system for your PCs. 1. You can expect the new upgrade sometime next year. However, users will be able to join the Windows Insider Program that lets you use an early build of the Windows 10. Do take note that you’ll run into some faulty bugs here and there, that’s for sure. 2. The new Windows will run across all devices. This OS will run on everything from your desktops to your smartphone, while the UI will adjust considering the different screen sizes. 3. Some things are better left untouched. The 10’s new “oldschool” look will present itself in the Start menu. This means you won’t have to deal with the 8’s full-screen Start menu or apps. Instead, the touch-friendly menu will be optional. 4. Performance, as expected, is going to be even better. You’ll be able to view all your tasks in the taskbar, while a new quadrant layout will let you split the screen so that you can view four different apps at the same time. 5. This would be a good time to possibly upgrade your hardware, be it a desktop or tablet. Windows 10 will require certain upgraded specs to run smoothly. For example, the Windows 8.1 setup introduced a 64-bit system that bumped older processors to the curb. If you’re planning on getting a new PC, it’s recommended you wait a few months until the new crop of computers start rolling out with Windows 10. You won’t have to deal with the hassle of spending more money and time in upgrading. While no single model is perfect, it leaves plenty of questions and doubts. What you may not know is that your choice of brand and smartphone says a lot about who you are. Here’s a fun take on gadgets based on research information gathered from various resources like Exponential Interactive and Dr Paul Harrison of Deakin University. Apple iPhone For the so called upper class, those who earn more clearly prefer the iPhone. Shocked? Of course not. They are ridiculously expensive, maybe not as absurd as a Vertu (that’s a whole different story), but a small percentage of smartphone users will lean towards the iOS. These users frequently travel, drink plenty of “premium” bottled water, and prefer wine over beer. You get the picture. White collar folks, we’re looking at you. Samsung smartphones Opting for yoga for exercise, rather than running? Those are the Samsung folks. These users aren’t as heavy smartphone users like the Apple people. The use of phones is moderate, and they are more open to new experiences. You’ll see them more likely driving a Toyota than a BMW, and favour Rafael Nadal over Roger Federer. HTC crowd Don’t judge them. They tend to have a relaxed attitude towards work (not lazy), but love playing video games. The brand also identifies with families or men who are more family oriented. And unlike the Samsung fans, they rather cheer for Federer. Blackberry outfit They want to be taken seriously, having no time for those countless apps on other smartphones. While they might carry an iPhone or Android device as well, they cannot function in their careers without a Blackberry handset. They are a little bit old school, mixed with the new. The rest of the bunch Motorola users are big fans of dance music, the LG crew are fond of Xbox and are more likely to buy an HDTV over any other device, while Sony lovers are brand loyalists. You have to remember all of this is a generalisation, not everyone is alike and tastes will differ. apps The AA meeting Two is always better than one, especially when it’s free | Mahmood Hossain Google Play Store Ask Me Anything (AMA) is an app that can be used to throw questions at famous celebrities, to leading figures, or just to your average Joe with something special to offer. It seems as if the developers from Reddit.com are presenting this app as an interview tool for all smartphone users. Just like any other modern day app, this has a wonderful laid out design. The idea behind it though, is very simple and very fun. You’ll be updated on all the AMA interviews, letting you ask a question when someone is marked as “Active.” The same goes for notifications, as you’ll never really miss out on an interview that is currently trending on AMA. The app also allows you to be more active by voting questions and answers up and down to make sure the best content is provided first. With the introduction of the CBR 150R, Honda has taken a major stride forward to make its mark in the much dominated 150cc segment in the sub-continent. This to-date is Honda’s most aggressive move to take a more prominent stand in the Asian motorcycle market. The CBR 150R, much like the CBR 250R, takes in a good deal of design cues from the VFR 1200. You would most probably end up mistaking the CBR 150/250 for each other on-road. But then, the similarity ends right there. It features unique Y-shaped headlights that provide extra visibility while riding at night. The side mirror handles on the other hand are in line with the windshield, similar to bigger bikes. The separated signal lights with a round built-in tail light further enhance the sporty look. The speedometer is well designed with a clear display of speed, rpm, fuel and engine temperature at plain sight. Like all other high-end bikes, the CBR 150R features disc brakes both at the front and rear. This bike without a doubt shows a persona to become a great lure among motorcycle enthusiasts. Technology According to Honda, the CBR 150R features a PGM-FI electronic fuel system that aids in boosting the fuel mileage and achieve Euro III emission standards. There’s no doubt that the Honda CBR 150R is built for repeat runs. It is a practical everyday sports bike. The CBR 150R, looks apart, is extremely comfortable, returns excellent fuel economy, and most importantly has a crazy engine with equally amazing dynamics. But, it lacks a lot in terms of goodies at this price point. Well, in reality, most companies give you exactly what you want but it will be a compromise to live with. On the other hand, Honda gives you an easy everyday bike that encourages you to become better and extract as much as you can from it. Performance and handling The heart of the Honda CBR 150R is based on a 149cc four-stroke single cylinder DOHC engine with CDI ignition paired to a six-speed wet clutch manual transmission. The combined maximum power output is 18.5HP at 10500rpm and 13.5Nm of torque at 8500rpm. The bike employs dual-telescopic shocks at the front while the rear is suspended by a monoshock. The adjustable monoshock suspension provides a more dynamic and responsive feedback even in terrible road conditions. The disc brakes at both front and rear are the right stuff which are very precise and allow you to avoid any sort of unwanted mishaps 5 AUTO CORRECT Why is the speedometer needle not moving? Sounds like a bad speed sending unit or a snapped speedometer cable depending on what car you are using. All cars earlier of 2000 are equipped with speedometer cable and all cars onwards of 2000 are equipped with a speed sending unit; both can be easily replaced without creating a huge dent on your wallet. But we would recommend replacing the entire gauge cluster instead of repairing it. There are a billion perks of living in a country that is as conveniently impoverished and needy as ours. However, more often than not, we are forced into situations when we genuinely wish it wasn’t the case. For instance, the make-shift “stalls” we come across in front of our schools that sell cheap cosmetics and clothing items, and sometimes even shoes, attract a larger crowd of aunties than do the more sophisticated stores in town. They spread out their pink cloths across the pavement like they own it, showing off all the magical glitz hidden comfortably inside their sacks. The aunties, enamoured of the cut-rate pricing, will not let go of a chance, such as this, to bargain. They stand on their swollen feet for hours in a row, buying bedsheets and clothes they could care less about and haggle away their lunch time while making their children wait outside with a lollipop inside their mouths, their faces melting in sweat. Yes, the lollipop was indispensable to our sanity. Sadly, we all are way too accustomed to this scenario to care anymore. Frankly, I applaud their earnest dedication to attain the high chair of bargaining. The men selling these “necessities” have become more than just a fad in our town; they’re an icon. Everywhere we go, we’ll somehow find them hovering around a corner, and somehow they’ll attract the ladies. No matter how much cash the women have in their reticules to spare, they Photo: Big Stock would still always want to have the maximum items at the minimum price. Quality will happily wait, as it has for over four decades. The most irksome characteristic about these dysfunctional, mystical luminaries is their persistence. In fact, no matter how much one hates them, the next generation will always have a reason to go running to them with open arms. Got a peeve to share about the state of the city’s roads and traffic? Thai massage It is often believed that Thai massage is for lazy people! The therapist uses his or her body to move the client in a variety of positions which manipulate the client’s body, moving it in yogalike stretches. The therapists will work on the compression of muscles, mobilisation of joints, acupressure, etc. Trigger point massage Benefits: Boosts energy level, increases flexibility, overall health and well-being. Deep tissue massage This massage applies deep pressure onto specific trouble points. The therapists use slow, intended strokes that focus pressure on layers of muscles and connective tissues under your skin. It may not be right for you, if you are looking for relaxation and stress relief because even after the session is over, you may feel pain for a few days. Benefits: Treating stiff, painful trouble spots like the shoulder, neck and back sprains. Swedish massage A deep tissue massage and a trigger point massage are very similar, the only difference is that the therapist pinpoints the exact troubled muscle areas and uses deep pressure to help you relax. One of the most popular massages these days, the therapists use their thumbs, fingertips and knuckles to apply circular pressure on the muscles to relax the entire body. The Swedish massage therapy increases the oxygen level in the blood, helping you to slip into tranquility in no time. Benefits: Releases chronic muscle pain and tension. Benefit: Stress relief, relaxation and releasing cramped muscles. Hot stone massage Special stones are used as massaging tools during this massage therapy. Basically, the therapist places the hot stones on the acupressure points. The direct heat of the stones relaxes the muscles and expands the blood vessels. This entire process helps the blood flow throughout the body. Benefits: Releases chronic pain, reduces stress and promotes deep relaxation. I never imagined my pieces would be read by any more people than the few friends I have. It just happened. I don’t think I’m all that funny in real life, but I do enjoy cheering people up. Laughter is extremely important to me. I feel like it’s something we take for granted. Everyone should have a good, hearty laugh whenever they can. In the early stages of life we were given a fantasy, hoping to fulfil it through the cinematic guise of our so called life. Girls tend to picture their dream guy to be as “perfect” as the leading men on the big screen. The fellas on the other hand, wouldn’t mind taking part in an item number, through the process of saving a damsel in distress of course. We cringe. As we mature, we realise our expectations and dreams have shattered. Imaan Sheikh wants to continue that trend with a humorous twist. Look at it this way - at least you can help the future generations to avoid the treacherous allure of big studio productions. Well, at least show them the difference. Photos: Courtesy AVEN U E T SATU R DAY, o cto b er 1 8 , 2014 4 Majority of us have grown up with Bollywood, or in other words, the overly dramatic culture. What has to be the most dramatic thing you’ve come across in life? Dramatic Chipmunk. YouTube that. Love it (winks). 5 How wonderful would life be if every problem could be solved by singing and dancing? It would be amazing! But I’m probably just saying that. I can still solve my weight problems by dancing though and, hey, I’m not doing that, right? Imaan took us all by surprise when she presented the online world with an honest and accurate version of the familiar classics we’ve seen from Bollywood. We were fortunate enough to steal this BuzzFeed writer away from her busy schedule to answer a few questions we had for her. 1 We have to know what possessed you to take a simple MEME concept and create an entire translation out of it. How long does it take you to complete one? Memes are popular internet phenomena. But I didn’t do a meme concept haha, it’s just the same font as memes really. It takes me about a week to complete one. It used to take a couple of days but with a full-time job, it’s harder to do. 2 We love the fact you don’t hold any punches, you roll with them. It’s a comedic skill we appreciate. Do you ever find yourself laughing in the process of putting texts and screenshots together? What goes on in your head? Sometimes I do find myself laughing but it isn’t at what I write on the pictures that makes me laugh. It’s the insane stuff that I have to hold back because as followers of my pieces might know, I’m rather sailormouthed. I laugh and think “What the hell, Imaan, you can’t say THAT!” 6 What annoys you the most about Bollywood films nowadays? The music isn’t memorable, at least for me. 7 On the subject of certain annoyances, what bothers you most about the portrayal of relationships on-screen compared to real life? I have never lived in India so I don’t know if this happens (and forgive me if it does), but are live-in girlfriends/ boyfriends a reality? I see that often in movies and wonder if it’s cool with people there. I’m all for whatever the hell kind of relationship people want, by the way. Everyone should live the way they like. I just don’t know/ reckon if live-in relationships are common/accepted in India. Fantastic if they are. 11 Trial room | 8 What is the single most important thing that you would like to tell to both men and women out there when it comes to reality vs expectations? About relationships? One thing, for both, men and women - none of us actually look like porn stars. Some of us are fuzzy, unfuzzy, chubby, too skinny and not perfectly shaped. Lower your expectations so you’re pleasantly surprised (laughs). Let’s get platonic! 9 Be honest, how many men have gracefully raised their arms, given you a dreamy look, and started to sing a classic song from an SRK movie? There actually was one boy in school who did that. It was surprisingly terrifying. 10 When all is said and done, where do you go from here? What more can your fans online expect from you? I have just started. I still have a long way to go and I’m currently focused on my BuzzFeed job. I’m concentrating on being innovative with humour. Head on over to facebook.com/ ImaanSay to hit the Like button or check out her best work at buzzfeed. com/imaansheikh and her blog at imaansheikh.wordpress.com There actually was one boy in school who did that. The global runways have spoken, and trending this season are comfortable, no-fuss styles you don’t have to break the bank over. Midnight garden Be it the popularity of grittily rebooted fairytales, the flirty florals of spring take a darker turn for the Autumn season. Vintage rose motifs flower against backdrops of midnight blue, oxblood and deep forest green. While brands like Abercrombie and Fitch are putting this print on their new denim, you can take the trend to a deshi destination by opting for chiffon and georgette saris in dark fall colours. fashion 4 style lessons from SATC Schooled by the fab four | Sabah Rahman Sporty luxe Sweatshirts have been considered the top wear equivalent of mom jeans in terms of dowdiness. No longer is this true, with the fancy and indulgent new offerings of brands like Macy’s. With lace detailing, luxious fabrics, this drapey garment is both utilitarian and chic. What makes Dhaka so awesome in this respect is that you can find great ones at bargain prices at Doja. Pair with dressy jeans and pearls, and they’re even party appropriate. When it comes to the iconic show, we all know we've watched a few episodes whether we admit it or not. All four characters have their distinctive sense of style. With Carrie's unique ensembles, Charlotte's delicate, feminine dresses, Miranda's flair for menswear or Samantha's loud sex appeal, many of us can hardly deny that SATC didn't have an impact on us when it came to fashion. Here are a few lessons we kept close to our hearts long after the show was over: Booty revolution You know this city is going places when you find ankle boots in our local shoe stores, and people are finally letting go of their “cowboy” stereotype to embrace the trend. Bata and Apex both have a limited, but absolutely fabulous range of booties that could turn your outfit from meh to wow in no time at all. Whether you’re rocking a kameez and leggings, or a sweater and jeans, a good pair of ankle boots will be your best friend, all the way through fall and winter. AVEN U E T SATU R DAY, o cto b er 1 8 , 2014 Don’t be afraid to experiment There is no doubt all the ladies were unique in their own way, but Carrie’s care-free way of dressing herself struck a chord with women worldwide. The lady was the very definition of edgy, strutting her stuff in the infamous tutu skirt paired with a plain ribbed tank. Whether she was all glammed out or just strolling the streets in casual chic, the look was all about playing with different styles and trends. Try it out by mixing vintage pieces with modern counterparts. Fashion should be fun and Carrie’s quirky outfits were always a pleasant riot. Don’t let your age dictate how you dress Love her or hate her, Samantha was the eldest among the friends, but she never let that get her down in the dumps. Just because you’re getting older doesn’t mean you need to throw in the towel and let yourself go. Samantha taught ladies that you can ooze sex appeal well over your 40s. You don’t have to exactly copy her look or reveal too much skin. She also wore power suits and bold trousers. Embrace bright colours and bold, printed clothing in the perfect fit. Know when to invest It’s always a good idea to splurge on a few key items when it comes to your closet, even if you have to save up for them. By key items, we mean things that will never go out of style like a leather bag, versatile boots and classic blazers. They are worth the dent in your wallet and will last for years. Sometimes quality beats quantity. Always be yourself If you like dressing girly, go for it. Take a second look at this week’s cover to get inspired by how we put a local spin on things. Lace saris and pearls can always do the trick. Prefer menswear? You’re in luck. It hardly ever went out of style throughout the decades. Your clothes should be a reflection of your unique self. Think of it this way - there is only one you in the whole wide world. Make the most of it! 13 Tailored| his style Getting the white right No rules against wearing white trousers, but it is how you wear them that counts | Mahmood Hossain We live in a tropical climate, which means we have certain advantages and disadvantages. Wearing white trousers is quite similar. White clothing is all about being fresh, clean and light, keeping the heavy burden at bay. That’s all fine and dandy up until you ruin your new white trousers. There’s nothing wrong with white, no matter if it’s day or night, however here’s how to style yourself in the correct manner. Repeat out loud: It-is-goingto-get-dirty. Don’t be in denial by assuming you’ll be frolicking around like an angel in your heavenly whites. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in your car all day or stood still, eventually you’ll bump into something. And you know what happens next, that blood curling reaction you make once your new whites have been soiled. Relax, it’s not the plague. Take a page from the gentlemen of PittiUomo and carry on as if you don’t care. Sprezzatura, remember that term? This might sound strange, but if your mind isn’t on the idea of your clothes getting dirty, you’ll come out cleaner than you think. The beauty of white, like its counterpart black, is that it goes with pretty much every colour you can think of. One of the tricks to wearing white trousers is not to pair them with dark contrasting shirt or shoes. Naturally, the eyes peer right down to unwanted marks. To divert the attention, keep the spring/summer trends in mind, for example, small patterned or striped shirts. You can’t go wrong by keeping things lighter, both in colours and weight. More importantly, you may never find white trousers or jeans (yes, they come in white too) that will feel uncomfortable. As long as you aren’t fretting over dirtying your whites, you’ll look smooth as white chocolate. style session with mahmood Hossain Q Recently, I was gifted a beautiful vintage pocket watch from my grandfather. I know this style of watch looks great on three-piece suits but unfortunately, I only have two-piece suits in my closet. I really want to start carrying this beautiful watch but how can I do so with no vest? It’s true, they do look proper on a three-piece, and good for you for keeping tradition alive. But not to worry, friend, there’s a simple fix to that. You actually keep the watch on your hip pocket of your trousers or jeans. That is where you place the fob – the medallion on the other end of the chain – in the little pocket of the waistband. If that little wonder isn’t there, simply wrap or attach the chain around your belt loop and place the watch inside your pocket. And start investing in waistcoats (vests). A in fashion Filling in those Big shoes You can still be the big man on campus and impress like the best | Mahmood Hossain John James Preston aka “Mr Big” is a huge figure in Carrie Bradshaw’s life. His choice of fashion and behaviour in style make for a commanding presence. It’s no surprise the character is based on a real life publishing executive – a former publisher of GQ. If you’ve got a tall and broad-shaped body like Mr Big, there are a few things in your wardrobe you need to make sure of. Your physical attributes may be intimidating, but what makes Mr Big’s look more welcoming is the fact that his personality doesn’t clash with his outfits. People will naturally notice you instantly from the moment you enter the room. So you have to be certain they aren’t disappointed by what they see. 1. Suits – The variety of suits need to be more on the safer side. We’re talking about solids - 2. 3. black, grey and navy. Nothing too loud or eccentric. Mr Big has a towering figure so it’s equally important to have suits with wider lapels. And there is nothing wrong with trying out a double-breasted suit or two so you can liven things up a little. Just make sure everything fits just right. Power ties – Wider lapels mean wider ties. It’s also about the colours. Deep reds, darker blues, and to mix things up from time to time, silky teal with a hint of mint. Again, these colours are soothing to the eye so on a larger man they don’t seem too frightening. Tone things down the right way. Grooming – It’s always important to keep a clean shaven look to remain professional, with short, close cut hair up top. One of the things we admire about Mr Big is that his hair is rarely parted with a slick back look. Avoid looking like a “Class A” sleazeball by applying minimal hair products. Photo: Big Stock Q Garnier’s Men Oil Clear face wash is supposed to be the best one for South Asian people, but when I use it my face gets seriously dry. What am I doing wrong? Am I putting too much or scrubbing too hard? It is the best for most men with oily skin. With ridiculous pressure of humidity, mixed with the overall heat, the Oil Clear is the best solution. If you want to continue to use this particular face wash, you should start moisturising with face moisturiser, not body lotion or cream. But you have to understand that not every face wash is for all men. Everyone has different skin issues, that’s why there are other face wash for men from different brands. Know your skin, do a little research and find the right one for you. The damage is really starting to show. My friend suggested that I go to a salon and get my hair rebonded. Is that my best bet? make-up Brushing beauty Breaking down the make-up brushes | Sabah Rahman your imperfections - dark spots, blemishes and redness. The pro tip is to blend like there is no tomorrow. The Kabuki brush Named after the brushes used for make-up in Japanese theatres, this is the one you should invest in if you favour powder foundation. This compact genius is also a great tool to perfectly blend your blush. The eye-shadow brush When it comes to your peepers, there are way too many options. Unless your work involves you being in front of a camera, you don’t need that many. A few basics will do the trick. Get yourself the two primary brushes. You’ll need a basic brush with condensed bristles that you can use to apply colour from lash to brow. The second one that we recommend is the eye sweep brush. This one can multi-task whether you want to contour or smoke out your eyes. A First of all, what is wrong with sporting sexy, wavy hair? Or tousled, voluminous beach tresses? If you absolutely can’t embrace your natural texture and can’t think of any other way to wear it but straight, you’re going to need to be patient. Re-bonding at this moment may further damage and dry out your crowning glory. Your main concern right now should be damage control. Trim those raggedy ends and condition with a repairing formula like there’s no tomorrow. Get weekly treatments at a reputable salon like Hair Bar in New DOHS. Consult an expert there since they have new straightening potions that aren’t as harsh on your hair. They will be able to tell you when you’re ready. What’s trending Deep side parts Extremely parting your hair to one side is very haute right now. Models, fashion queens and Hollywood starlets have all jumped on this wagon. The angled contour brush Ever wonder how make-up pros get their subjects to appear so flawless? It’s because they use professional tools. Yes, maybe some of us have gotten by using the mediocre applicators provided with our compacts or even used our fingertips. If you feel like it’s time to invest in a good set of brushes but feel a bit baffled by the vast array, we’re here to help you figure out which ones you need to get the job done. The foundation brush Plum lips Paired with clean, winged eyeliner, a berry stained pout is replacing the reds that have been ruling for a while now. Eyes inspired by the ocean Paint your eyes in colours of the sea. It’s all in - aqua, sea foam green and azure. Use it as eyeliner instead of basic black and add a double shot of mascara. This is the tool you need to invest in if you require heavy base coverage. You can work with cream as well as powder formulations and get fabulous and streak-free results. The bristles are usually angled to make sure you cover every nook and cranny. You should go easy on the product and build up to your desired coverage to avoid a cakey look and get the canvas, which is your face, ready before applying further products. The concealer brush Yes, you sure can use your fingers, but concealer brushes are gentler on the delicate skin around your eyes and help to not drag it downwards. This little miracle tool will cover all This one is all you’ll need to put some colour on those cheeks as well as contour your face. Worth a mention The egg-shaped wonder called the beauty blender has recently been what all the beauty insiders are talking about. Nothing will have all your bases covered as much as this sponge. Real vs faux Confused about whether you should splurge on real animal hair brushes or synthetic ones? Experts say that the real ones blend better and recently, most brands don’t harm animals, but just shave off some of their excess hair. If you can’t afford the real thing, the new crop of synthetic brushes can do a great job as well.
