Friday, October 17, 2014 Roland N Rock...The Pride of the Iowa Fairs is for Real By Bill Finley Roland N Rock's career began in a $1,000 race at the Eldon Fair in Iowa, which usually means a lifetime spent on the racetrack in obscurity, competing for small pots on dusty racetracks that most people in harness racing don't even know exist. It's one of the last places you'd expect to find a future star, just like the other tracks Roland Rock competed at–Humboldt, W hat Cheer, Sioux Center and Oskaloosa. But from such humble beginning a star has risen and there's no telling how far he will go. The story of Roland N Rock actually begins at the 2011 Harrisburg Mixed Sale. It was there that Perretti Farms dispersed its broodmare band and Duane Roland and his wife Connie were hoping they could find some Iowa sensation Roland N Rock will bargains. They paid point for major 3-year-old pacing $6,000 for a mare races next year (David Baum photo) named Hank's Chip, who was in foal to Rocknroll Hanover. Hank's Chip raced just once and was off the board, but Duane Roland dug deep into the pedigree page and found some things he liked. "There's nothing better than a Rocknroll Hanover," Roland said, "and we decided we would buy a couple of mares in foal to him. They were selling so many they couldn't all go for big money. Hank's Chip didn't have a record, but she's from the Lismore family from the Rooneys Lismore produced some really nice horses like Albert Albert, Lisheen, Lisryan. And Hank's Chip had a couple of siblings that made over $250,000. It Wasn’t That Tyler Moore A recent letter to editor here at HRU that criticized Racing Under Saddle races has caused some unfair controversy for Canadian driver Tyler Moore. The letter was indeed sent to us by a Tyler Moore, but this Moore listed his residence as Florida and the email did not come from the Canadian Tyler Moore’s email address. HRU regrets the confusion and hopes RUS fans will go easy on Tyler Moore the driver They also paid $9,000 for another Perretti mare in foal to Rocknroll Hanover and, according to Roland, the ensuing foal is a "complete dud.” The Rolands' primary business is farming and they have a 1,500 acre farm in Grinnell, Iowa where they grow corn and soybeans. Though they have a lot of horses (about 75), they say the horse business is something they do for fun. "W e have horses for our enjoyment," said Roland, who also trains the gelding. "That's our fun." From the Eldon Fair, Roland N Rock made his way across Iowa, demolishing the competition everywhere he went. "W e knew we really had something back in July when he raced at Oskaloosa," Roland said. "He only went in 59.3 but the last half was in 57.2, and that's the fastest half any horse has ever raced in Iowa. W e thought, ‘W ow, we've got a really good horse. It's like ok, what do we do now?’" Two starts later they took Roland N Rock to a $21,400 stakes at the Springfield, Illinois Fair and he won by 13 1/4 lengths. But with the 2-year-old staked to nothing, their options were limited and they returned to Iowa, where Roland N Rock won six more races. Balmoral racing secretary Doc Narotsky was watching (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 10/17/14 PAGE 2 of 8 the horse tear through the Iowa fair circuit and convinced Roland that he should supplement him to the American National. The cost would be $8,500, a lot considering the purse for the 2-year-old colt and gelding pace was just $86,000. The competition was stiffer this time, but the results were the same. Staying perfect at 14 for 14 in his career, he won by 2 1/4 lengths in 1:52.2 with John De Long driving "John De Long gets off the cart and says that would have been a ‘49.2' at a place like Pocono," Roland said. "He said this horse unbelievable." Along the way, the Rolands have turned down any and all offers to sell Roland N Rock. At first, they couldn't get the price they were looking for and, eventually, they decided the horses was so good that they had better keep him. Roland had seen first hand what can happen when you sell a prospect out of Iowa as his father Roger sold Panaramic Art for $60,000 and he went on to make $328,493, and also let Laughandbehappy get away. She won $729,104, including the Milton. "Could this horse be as good as those two? If we just race him little bit conservatively at three, can we make good money with him at 4, 5 and 6. Cash flow is more important to us than getting a lump sum,” Roland said. W ith nothing left on the calendar to shoot for, the Rolands have decided to give Roland N Rock the rest of the year off. Now knowing fully what they have they intend to stakes him to at least a handful of major races next year, among them Meadowlands Pace and the American Nationals. The horse will spend the winter relaxing in a paddock. His owners will spend the winter dreaming of Grand Circuit conquests. Chicago Star Bob Farrington Dies At 85 By Dean A. Hoffman Bob Farrington revolutionized harness racing a half-century ago. He revolutionized it by operating a year-round stable of raceway stock and claimers on the then-powerful Chicago racing circuit. W hile many horsemen still operated as if harness racing were a seasonal sport, Farrington campaigned his horses in any season and in any race they could win. In the process, Farrington made himself the winningest driver in harness racing. Bob Farrington in 2013 at W hen he won 200 races in Scioto Downs (Dean Hoffman 1961, harness devotees were photo) (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 10/17/14 PAGE 3 of 8 stunned. How could one driver win more than 200 races? That was at a time when a night racing program had fewer races (and much larger crowds). Three years later, Farrington won more than 300 races. At that stage in his life, he was seemingly unstoppable. Farrington, 85, died earlier this week in Florida. He was retired and had been away from limelight in harness racing for many years. You don't associate Bob Farrington with developing high-class stakes colts or even with winning major races. He was a grind-it-out horseman who entered his horses where they could win---and they often did. And he kept them in classes where they could win or certainly be competitive. It was a winning formula. One of his greatest stars of that era was Dancing David, a pacer with a mark of 1:58f and earnings of $218,731---every dollar earned the hard way in overnight races. Dancing David may be long forgotten now, but he terrorized his opposition at Sportsman's Park in the mid-1960s. Farrington was just into his thirties then and he was the king of Chicago tracks: Sportsman's Park, W ashington Park, and Maywood. His stock didn't come with fancy pedigrees and fast records, but they won races in every class on the card. Farrington hailed from a harness racing family in the central Ohio community of Richwood and vaulted into prominence in partnership with the late Lloyd Arnold, a livestock trader. Many of the horses that made headlines for Farrington in the 1960s were owned by the Arnold Cattle Company. His older brothers Dick and Brad were familiar names in harness racing, too. Dick trained and drove a Grand Circuit stable for Lloyd Arnold in the 1970s. Some of Dick's best-remembered horses owned by Arnold were W arm Breeze and Tender Loving Care. Dick also trained and drove the grey wonder Laag. W hen Herve Filion came along to displace Bob Farrington as the sport's hottest sulky-sitter in the late 1960s, Farrington continued to maintain his racing operating. He was chosen by Jim Harrison to contribute a chapter to the original Care & Training of the Trotter & Pacer published in 1968. His topic was fittingly on the year-round stable, still a novel concept in harness racing. In the early 1970s, Farrington The great Rambling acquired the Indiana-bred pacer Willie (USTA photo) Rambling W illie and they later achieved nationwide fame with him as a result of a book and a publicity tour organized by the USTA. (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 10/17/14 PAGE 4 of 8 Rambling W illie won the feature the night that the Meadowlands opened in 1976 and was still winning races there a half-dozen years later as part of his national tour. Much like Dancing David, Rambling Willie hailed from a pedigree that ran to the woods quickly, but he was an amazingly durable champ that paced sub-2:00 miles when those were hardly routine. He was voted the champion older pacer in North America in 1975-76-77. Farrington and his wife Vivian gave generously to an Ohio church and thus the book that Don Evans and Phil Pikelny wrote about Rambling W illie was titled "The Horse That God Loved." Farrington showcased his star gelding at tracks around the United State and Canada at a time when media coverage for racing was more plentiful. W illie paraded down city streets and made appearances at shopping malls. It was a heady time for harness racing. Farrington worried when crowds and kids got around W illie because the old boy could get a bit ornery and kick at times, but W illie came to love the attention and handled it all with aplomb. His tour was a major publicity coup for harness racing. Farrington was inducted into the Living Hall of Fame in 1979. In 1983, Rambling W illie's legs were noticeably troubling him and he retired that fall. Fittingly, his final race was at Sportsman's Park in Chicago. When he left the winner's circle his earnings were past $2 million, and he lived out his life at the Kentucky Horse Park. Farrington's profile in harness racing then became much lower and he spent his final decades in Sanford, Florida. Takter: Sport Has to Create More 4-Year-Old Only Races It's been a great year for Jimmy Takter's star 3-year-old male trotters, but what about next year? Nuncio and Father Patrick will be four in 2015 and that might mean tough campaigns and losses against the grizzled aged veterans. Takter said he isn't against the rules that are forcing top 4-year-olds to stay on the track, but he said the industry needs to give these horses a break by creating far more races restricted to their age group. "From May through August there has to be races for them to establish themselves," he said. "If we have to race these horses as 4-year-olds you have to have races for them. Otherwise it's wrong that you force them to race. "Look at the year (4-year-old) Creatine has had," Takter continued. "Now that it is toward the end of the year he has started to establish himself and he is doing well. He can now compete against the older horses. (Trainer) Bob (Stewart) was smart to take a step back and race him against easier company when he saw he couldn't go with the top horses. I did the same with Sunfire Blue Chip. He went in 48.1 with 26 last quarter and didn't get a check. I said, time out, I've got to do something and now we has five Jimmy Takter wants to straight wins and broke the see more races for Canadian record on half mile straight 4-year-olds track." W ith the 4-year-old season a tough one in the U.S. some trainers are contemplating sending their trotters to Europe to campaign. Takter said that is a possible option for his horses, but cautioned that winning over there is not as easy as some think. "It's possible I would send someone to Europe; that's something I have to consider," he said. "‘Patrick' is good enough to beat the aged horses and I’m not afraid to race him against anyone, so I am not worried about racing him (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 10/17/14 PAGE 5 of 8 here. Europe is not that easy. Some people think it is easy. I know Europe and I know it's not easy and things are complicated. You have to know what you are doing and you can't just send the horse over there." Hempt and Lynch Stakes At Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs To Become Early Closers in 2015 The Max C. Hempt Memorial Stake No. 61 and the James M. Lynch (Filly Division) for 3-Year-Old pacers will become early closers in 2015. Both the initial nominating payment and 2-year-old sustaining payment that have been made on horses to the former stake event will be refunded by the Hambletonian Society. There will be a new nominating fee of $500 due for the Max Hempt (3-Year-Old Open) Pace and a $350 nominating fee for the Lynch (3-Year-Old Filly) Pace. Both are due on February 15, 2015. Complete information regarding subsequent sustaining payments and starting fees will be announced in December. For 2015, the Max C. Hempt Memorial 3 Year-Old Open Pace will be a guaranteed $500,000 and the James M. Lynch Memorial 3-Year-Old Filly Pace will be guaranteed $300,000. Dates for these events will also be announced in December. For No. 61, the monies will be prorated among the owners of the horses eligible at the time of cancellation. For No. 62, the nomination fees will be refunded to the nominators. With Yearling Market Hot, Expectations Are For More of the Same at Indy Sale By Bill Finley So far, it's been a sellers' market at the various yearling sales held across North American and that should be the case again today as some 176 horses will be auctioned off at the Indiana Premier Yearling Sale. The sale will take place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds and it begins at 11 am. W hen asked if this sale will duplicate others, most of which have shown increases in the neighborhood of 10 percent or more, sales manager Randy Midland Acres will sell Hip 163, Manges said: "I Rockinwiththebest (by Rockin Image) at think those today’s Indiana Premier Yearling Sale numbers are realistic. I would expect to be up and somewhere in the 5 to 10 percent area. Maybe not up as much as some of other sales, but I do expect it to be up." It's quite possible that the sale topper will be one of the nine yearlings in the sale by Always A Virgin. The stallion's offspring have had a big year on the racetrack. Always B Miki is among the top 3-year-old pacers in the sport and Color's A Virgin won this year's Jugette. "I just wish we had more Always A Virgins to sell," Manges said. "Some of the breeders are racing them themselves, but there's also the situation of where he is in his stallion career. W ith new sires coming in people always want to wait until they prove themselves. These horses selling this year are from his fourth crop. W ith young sires like that a lot of people jump around and take a wait-and-see attitude." Another horse to keep an eye on is Hip 10, Vee Vee, a filly by Valley Victor. She is a half-sister to Cee Bee Yes, who established a world record (1:50.2) at the recent Red Mile meet. There are 20 yearlings in the catalogue by Rockin Image, another sire who should enjoy a good sale. His first crop is now two and he has had 18 starters break the 1:55 barrier. "Rockin Image has had very good year first year and we're fortunate have several of them in sale," Manges said. Indiana star Natural Herbie has won on the Grand Circuit, which should give a boost to his sire, Here Comes Herbie. There are 13 Here Comes Herbies in the sale. The good news for Indiana racing is there is no bad news. The industry seems stable and the sire stakes program is strong. Manges said those are positive factors that should come into play today. "The mood in Indiana is very good," he said. "Erv Miller, Ron Burke, Tony Alagna, they have had good success over here. I expect some of them to be over for the sale. W ith not a whole lot going on in Illinois a lot of Illinois buyers will come over and look at the Indiana breds because it's close to their home base. Several of the Illinois guys have done well in Indiana." Mohawk Meet Overall, per Race Handle Rise CAMPBELLVILLE, October 16, 2014 - W oodbine Entertainment Group (W EG) today announced that overall wagering and average per race handle on the 2014 Mohawk Standardbred meet, which concluded Monday, October 13, were up over last year. The Campbellville track held 102 race cards and recorded an "all-sources" betting total of $152,503,221, a 15.8 per cent increase over last year’s $131,622,569 from 84 race cards. The average per race of $132,958 in 2014 showed a 2.6 per cent increase over the $129,550 bet per card in 2013. The meet’s marquee events also showed growth. W agering on the Pepsi North America Cup and Canadian Pacing Derby/Metro Pace cards were especially strong. “Pacing Derby” night handle of $5,006,896 was the highest handle figure ever recorded on one program at the 51-year-old Campbellville track. It was third highest mark ever recorded on the W EG Standardbred circuit, behind (continued on next page) HarnessRacingUpdate.com • 10/17/14 PAGE 6 of 8 only 2002 Breeders Crown card ($5.4 million) and 2001 Breeders Crown program ($5.2 million), both at W oodbine. On “Cup” night, the $3,437,037 wagered was the highest since the race moved to Mohawk in 2007. “W e had an excellent Mohawk meet,” said Jamie Martin, Executive Vice-President of Racing. “W e’re especially pleased with our big race nights, which featured strong crowds in an excellent setting. W e also offered a high quality day-to-day meet to racing fans and customers with plenty of racing opportunities for horsepeople.” Creatine, Foiled Again Headed to Dayton for Lucrative New Derbies Thursday, October 16, 2014 - from Hollywood Gaming Dayton Raceway Dayton, OH---Hollywood Dayton Raceway, the new kid on the harness racing block, is pleased to announce that the richest pacer in history and the hottest free-for-all trotter in North America are headed to the five-eighths mile oval for the inaugural Grand Circuit stakes at the two-week old track. A total of 26 of the continent’s best older pacers are staked to the new event including, but not limited to, other notables like Apprentice Hanover, Bolt The Duer, Clear Vision, Sunfire Blue Chip and Twilight Bonfire. Creatine is also headed to Dayton for the trotting division, according to his trainer Bob Stewart. In his last two starts, the son of Andover Hall has captured the $166,300 American National at Balmoral in a track-record setting time of 1:51.3; and triumphed in the $173,000 Allerage, edging Sebastian K by a head in 1:51.2. A total of 47 trotters remain eligible to the Dayton Trotting Derby, a list that reads like the “W ho’s W ho” of the best current open squaregaiters. The list includes Sebastian K, Archangel, Daylon Magician, W ishing Stone and local Dayton track record holder Count Me In, among many notable others. © Copyright Harness Racing Update.
