October 2014 Newsletter Principal’s Note

October 2014 Newsletter
Principal’s Note
Parents and Guardians;
October is conference time which is a great opportunity for our school
community to engage. I would like to share information about our format
to prepare you for this experience. Liberty Memorial Central Middle
School has two formats for conferences. We will have traditional Parent
Teacher Conferences (PTC) and Student-Led Conferences (SLC). These two
options offer a different experience and I encourage you to do both!
The traditional PTC will take place on Wednesday evening from 4:006:00pm and at three different times on Thursday. This conference format
is commonly known as “drop-in conferences” where parents and teachers
meet one-on-one and have a 3-5 minute discussion. These conferences will
be held in the Duver Gym and Cafeteria, do not require an appointment,
and students are encouraged but not required to attend.
We are excited about the benefits that Student-Led Conferences provide
to Liberty Memorial Central Middle School students and their families.
SLC’s encourage students to have greater accountability for their learning,
teach students to evaluate their own progress and gain a greater
commitment to school work and learning. The Student-Led Conference
engages parents as active participants in their student’s learning and
enhances the opportunity for parents to be involved in their child’s
academic, goal-setting process.
At a student-led conference, the student will do most of the talking. Expect
your child to reflect on work completed at school, their progress in each
class, and individual goals they have established. Advisory teachers will
guide students as they prepare for student-led conferences. These
conferences will take place on Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 PM and two
different times on Thursday. Student Led Conferences are by
appointment. Advisory teachers will contact parents to set an
appointment.
Along with conferences on Wednesday evening, our Community In Schools
coordinator is hosting community groups with information on service and
opportunities outside of school. Please review this newsletter for more
information on conferences & the community fair and we hope to see you
at conferences October 22nd & 23rd.
Thanks,
Jeff Harkin Principal, Liberty Memorial Central Middle School

Guests to our School
Teachers and students hosted a group of 10 visiting
educators from Nigeria on Monday, September
22nd as part of LMCMS’ involvement with the
University of Kansas Professional Development
Schools . The group toured the building with 8th
grade student ambassadors visiting classrooms and
participated in a panel discussion with our 8th
grade core teachers to ask specific questions about
educational practices. Students and staff really
enjoyed being able to share how amazing LMCMS
is.
Construction Update
We are well on our way to having a new heating
and cooling system building wide after some
delays. Thank you to the entire school community
for your patience as this work is completed to help
make the building more energy efficient and
comfortable for learning! Pictured is part of the
old boiler system being dismantled and removed.
What is the Fun Run?
The Fun Run is a 2.2 mile run through our neighborhood that our
entire building participates in. The Fun Run is the only fundraiser
we do as a school; last year we collected almost $20,000. The
money raised goes to support field trips, extra-curricular activities
such as the Central Garden, GSA, and Smart Strength, and to assist
students with uniforms and school supplies, among other things.
Students are invited to help by soliciting donations from our
community and beyond. Prizes are given to students in daily
drawings, as well as for Top Finishers and Top Earners.
Volunteer with the 2014 Fun Run!
Part of the reason we are so successful with the Fun Run every year
is because of the support from our families and community.
Start
Volunteers are needed to:
Solicit donations for prizes from local businesses .
We have a list
of businesses we contact every year and always appreciate help
asking for prizes and adding to the businesses that support us.
Help collect money the mornings of Oct 26-Nov 3.
Volunteers are
needed 7:30—8:30am to collect donations from students, hand
out prizes and count donations .
Help with the Fun Run on October 31 at 2:30p.
We need
volunteers on every corner to keep students safe, people to hand
out and collect finisher cards at the end of the race, as well as
handing out water and apples as people finish.
If you are able to help, please contact Laura Leonard at
[email protected] or Erin Barker at [email protected]
END
One of the frustrations we frequently hear from parents is being uncertain how to be involved at school
when you aren’t in elementary school any longer. Students have a lot more teachers, a need to explore
more on their own, and don’t always want their parents to be “visible” any more. We welcome your
involvement, and here are some ideas on how to stay involved and still let your student spread their wings.

Support the Fun Run, our annual fund raiser. Assistance is always needed soliciting
donations from local businesses. We also need help collecting donations from students
7:45 - 8:15a October 27-November 3, and supervising the Fun Run 2:30—3:15 October
31st. Contact Laura Leonard at [email protected] or Erin Barker at
[email protected] if you would like to sign up to help!

Volunteer to chaperone a STOMPEDE, the first STOMPEDE is October 21.

Donate food for parent-teacher conferences on October 22nd or volunteer to be at the welcome table.

Joining the LMCMS Parents’ Group is a great way to meet other parents while supporting the school.
They are responsible for ordering and selling school apparel, planning and organizing the new family ice
cream social, coordinating volunteers for different activities throughout the year,
and being available for other school needs. The next Parents’ Group meeting for is
October 15 at 7:00 in the Student Services conference room.

Join Site Council, the building advisory committee made of staff, parents, and
community members. Site Council is a great way to gain insight on how the school
operates and help advise staff on school policy. The next Site Council Meeting is
October 15 at 7:00 in the Student Services Conference room.

Volunteer to chaperone a school activity night. The next activity night is November 7. 6-8p.

Help with the February Parents’ Group Social.

Collect donations for the STOMP store or help run the STOMP Store Wednesday
afternoons or Fridays at lunch.

Participate with your student in Smart Strength Tuesday and Thursday afternoons
2nd and 3rd quarter.

Help with music and theater performances.

Help maintain the landscaping in front of the building or the native garden on the
South side.

Volunteer with our after school clubs such as Homework Zone, Future CIty, or
Chess.
Contact Laura Leonard, our Parent Involvement Facilitator, at [email protected] to volunteer, to offer
suggestions or for assistance.

8TH GRADE FIELD TRIP
The Parents’ Group needs assistance during ParentTeacher conferences October 22nd & 23rd.
On October 10th, the 8th grade will be taking a field
trip to the Flint Hills in Manhattan to explore the
geology, ecology, and history of this unique area.
Students will visit either the Konza Prairie Biological
Station or the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Students
will need to pack their lunch or purchase a sack
lunch from the cafeteria. Students should wear
comfortable, close-toed shoes for walking and
weather appropriate clothing. A field trip
permission form will be coming home shortly.
Chaperones are needed to help supervise students
on this field trip. Able to help chaperone this
exciting field trip? Please contact Mrs. Lauren Jones
at [email protected] or 785-832-5400 ext 2519.
Side dishes and desserts are needed to supplement
the teacher meal on October 22nd. Donations
should be dropped off in the main office before 3:00.
Also, parents are needed to help with the Parents
Group merchandise table during conferences the
evening of October 22nd, 4p-8p, and on October
23rd anytime between 8a and 7:30p. Any
contribution helps, even just half an hour. Money
from merchandise goes towards support student
and teacher activities at LMCMS.

Food harvested in the fall goes into the school cafeteria and
home with student volunteers.
Anyone who volunteers 20+ hours earns a free t-shirt (or you
can support the garden by purchasing one for $10!) Thank
you to all of volunteer students and community members. We
have had nearly 1000 hours of service in the garden this
season which is truly remarkable. We are so fortunate to have
so many students, families, and neighbors support us.

Drama Remembers World War II’s Evils In Its Fall Play
The LMCMS Drama Department proudly presents the poignant drama Edelweiss by Craig Sodaro on October 9 and 10 at 7:00 PM in the auditorium. Tickets are $5/adult and $3/student. This highly dramatic
work, set in WWII Munich, Germany follows the classroom of Dorchen Werth at the Schloss Strassen
School for Girls. Fraulein Werth works tirelessly to provide a safe haven for her students who represent a
microcosm of German society. Not only are these adolescent girls trying to make sense of the Third
Reich’s brutal rise to power, but also of normal teenage emotions like falling in love, dance music, and doing well in school. Werth’s dream of providing some normalcy for her students begins to shatter as the
Reich infiltrates the school intent on weeding out German undesirables.
Helena All leads the cast as Dorchen Werth
and is supported by Violet Belt, Shiloh
Catterton, Anabelle B. Clark, Oliva Collar,
LexiAnne Dutcher, Jack Foster, Hailey Gotto,
Eva Markoulatos, Henry Morland, Ali
Pennewell, Jenna Reese, Olivia Rothrock, Gabriel Santangelo, Sophia Tosh. Chance Branson serves as student director. Stage crew
members include Thomas All, Sophia
Branden, Bradley Bunting, Shiloh Catterton,
Rowyn Fisher, Abby Guevara, Jennifer Munoz, Mayra Munoz, Emmeline Schneider, and Evan Sutton. Ms.
Margaret Jones and Mr. Scott Ireland are the department’s directors.
Smart Strength: Year Seven
Parents and staff are invited to join LMCMS students as they learn about healthy choices and work out with
professional trainers from The Summit. All participating students must turn in a contract that they and their
parents both sign. Chad Richards, one owner of the Summit, leads the group with three other trainers every
Tuesday and Thursday during the second and third nine weeks, immediately after school in the Loomis gym.
Students can get contracts from Mrs. Souders; they must be signed and turned in before the first day of
Smart Strength, Tuesday, October 28.
For those new to Smart Strength, the afternoon is structured
as follows:
Students, parents, and staff arrive by 3:15 and eat a
healthy snack provided by Wheatfields, The Merc,
Checkers, TCBY, Dillons, or Hilary’s Eat Well.
The trainers lead a whole group warm-up followed by
small group training.
A fun game is used for the cool down.
At 4:45 the session ends.
We hope to see you for the opening of Smart Strength’s 7th
season October 28. Talk to Mrs. Souders with questions!
Are you interested in architecture, engineering, or
design? Then come to Future City, a club and contest for students interested in designing and building their own city 150 years in the future. Future

Integrity
Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not.—Oprah Winfrey
Every month, the middle schools focus on one theme during advisory; the theme for October is integrity.
Raising Kids with Integrity
Does your child act on her or his convictions and stand up for her or his beliefs? Having integrity can take a long
time to learn, but the more a child practices this, the more likely she or he will develop this crucial value.
· Talk to your kids about what integrity means, and what it means to stand up for your own values. Ask them
who they see as having a sense of integrity, and who they think backs down from their values in the face of
adversity.
· As a family, identify role models with integrity whom you admire. These may include Mother Teresa, Martin
Luther King Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, or someone else. Learn about these individuals and how they learned to
live a life of integrity.
· Applaud and support family members when they “do the right thing, even when it’s hard.” Maybe your child
stepped in when another child was being teased. Or maybe your child admitted to cheating on a test—even
though she knows the entire class cheated and she was the only one who got into trouble for her honesty.
· When someone with integrity admits to scandal or making a mistake, talk about this as a family. Talk about
which actions you believe are most damaging and why. With older teenagers, discuss why leaders can be
tempted to do the wrong thing.
Having values doesn’t mean much if you can’t stand up for them—an important lesson to impart upon your
children. Everyone’s values and beliefs are tested at some point in their lives, and it takes strong conviction to
stand up for them in the face of adversity. Help your children prepare for these times by encouraging them to
have integrity, and set a good example by standing by your own beliefs, even when it’s hard.

STOMP Into Action Night
On October 22, 2014, Communities In Schools will once again host an event that will bring our Lawrence
Community Partners to LMCMS. This event will be held in conjunction with Parent/Teacher conferences.
Parents, students and staff are encouraged to visit the Loomis Gym before or after your scheduled
conference. Organizations that serve our youth in Lawrence will be present with information and displays
that will help our parents and students learn more about Fall and Winter Activities.
There will be an activity table for younger siblings in grades K-4, and an estimation station for our middle
school students, complete with opportunities to win great prizes. Community Representatives will be
available from 4-7 PM and light refreshments will be served. All students must be accompanied by an adult.
So to all the Mustang Family, come out and show your support and “Stomp into Action” for academic and
social success!!

Have questions about enrollment, testing, mental health, or student
support needs? Let us know!
The word bullying is frequently used by the media and in schools. According
to Kansas statute bullying is defined as:
Any intentional gesture or any intentional written, verbal, electronic or
physical act or threat either by a student, staff member or parent towards a
student or by any student, staff member or parent towards a staff member
that is sufficiently severe, persistent or pervasive that such gesture, act or
threat creates an intimidating, threatening or abusive educational environment . . . . see K.S.A. 2012 Supp.72-8256 for the complete statute.
Experts also suggest that bullying involves an existing power differential between those who bully and those
who are the target.
While not all social conflict is bully behavior, LMCMS expects all students and staff to treat one another with
respect. If your student is concerned about bullying or how they are being treated, it is important to report
it to a staff member or fill out a bullying report in student services or by using the online reporting system,
http://cjhs.usd497.org/Bullying
Liberty Memorial teachers, counselors, social workers, and administrators regularly work with students having conflicts to develop the skills needed to work together and resolve conflicts.
