Second Hand Rose Report
2013/2014 financial year has been busy again, with a total of
$8201 being donated back into the district.
Thank you to all those who have donated items to our shop,
without these donations our shop would not continue to run.
Thank you again to Heath Transport for taking numerous
pallets of excess clothes to Adelaide for St Vincent De Paul,
our shop is just not big enough to hold everything.
Also a big thank you to our volunteers who keep our shop
running smoothly.

fundraising for the evening
Monies raised by clothing sales and the dinner auction on Saturday 13th September
reached the target of $5,000 and will be passed on to Angel Flight at the end of the
expedition. This is a great effort as most clothing items (all new) sold for $5 each! Some
items were $10 or $15.
Mid way through the expedition $9,000 had already been raised for the Royal Flying
Doctor Service via other internal auctions with Rotary Health reaching $1,500 by mid
expedition.
In addition to the funds raised for charity, the group gives local businesses and
organisations an opportunity to raise funds for their own purposes.
A special visitor for the dinner auction evening was Owen, an Angel Flight pilot who
happily gave everyone an insight into the program and how pilots and ground crew
(Earth Angels) work together to ensure country people have an easy transition to and
from their non emergency medical

Vacswim At Wudinna December
2014
Vacswim will be held at Wudinna before
Christmas again this year, from Monday
December 15th to Friday 19th December. You can
go online to enrol at www.vacswimsa.com.au/
and follow the prompts. All levels from Level 1
to Bronze Cross can enrol on this site. It is $30
for Level 1-7 and $50 for Higher awards.
I would appreciate it if you could let me know
once you have enrolled via email or text, so I can
start organising times before I get an official list
from Vacswim.
If you are interested in being a life saver for the
Wudinna Pool this coming season then you need
to have done your Bronze Medallion. If you
completed your Medallion last Vacswim then I
would strongly advise you also do the Bronze
Cross, to reinforce the lifesaving knowledge,
skills, fitness and Resuscitation. If you are 16
years or older and interested in doing the
Austswim Instructors Course then have a look
on the Austswim website for any courses being
offered. There is one at Pt Lincoln in October,
but there will be others in Adelaide area.
As always I will be looking for Volunteers to help
with the program. Once again I can’t stress
enough that our wonderful volunteers make the
Wudinna Program so successful. These hours
can be part of the requirements of the Austswim
Instructors course.
Looking forward to seeing you all during the
Vacswim week.

Kammermann Family Reunion
27th and 28th of September
In May 1914, Ernst (Ern) Kammermann was allotted Section 33,
Hundred of Pygery. Ern had walked the property prior to the
application and noted that he could see the boot marks or another
potential farmer. However, he was successful and moved up from
Cummins to begin farming the land.
This land is still being run by the family today. An informal family
reunion is planned for the 27th and 28th of September, on the
property at Pinbong (64 Kammermann Road).
A short Thanksgiving service will be held at the farm at 10am on
Sunday the 28th, and any interested people from the community
are welcome to attend. This will be followed by morning tea and a
BBQ lunch. For more information please contact Janine Scholz on

Michael O’Loghlen Reunion
The descendants of Michael O’Loghlen (O’Loghlen, Murphy, McKenna & O’Brien) are
commemorating 100 years of the families farming in the Kyancutta District.
Michael O’Loghlen, who had been a widower for 22 years and father of 9 children, was aged 68
years when he travelled from Adelaide by boat. He then caught the train to Polkdinny siding as
Kyancutta was then known.
The railway line reached the area, as the country was surveyed in 1913 and sections were due
for allocation on the 1st of February 1914. On his arrival in 1913, Michael borrowed a horse
from the surveyors and rode over the country to choose his blocks for when they came up for
allocation.
Michael O’Loghlen was allocated Section 37 Hundred of Wannamana on the 3rd of February
1914. His sons Joseph and Thomas were allocated sections 38 and 36 respectively.
Michael and his son Joseph left Georgetown (in the Mid North) with a team of horses and
wagon in July 1914, travelled through to Port Augusta around Yorkies Crossing (as there was no
bridge) and across to the Eyre Peninsula. Back then these were bush tracks only. They arrived
within metres of their boundary survey peg.
Settler sheds and a tank were erected on each block prior to applications. The shed on section 37 was made into a home
and the hard work commenced. They were ‘lucky’ as these blocks contained some open plains with a good supply of
spear grass etc, so they were able to feed their horses.
In 1915 Michael’s son Thomas and daughter Mary arrived to housekeep for the men, along with another daughter Ellen
and her husband Richard Murphy. Ellen and Richard were allocated Section 34 Hundred of Wannamana.
Daughter Catherine’s husband Michael O’Brien was allocated section 35 Hundred of Wannamana. Mary married Henry
McKenna (who was the first school teacher at the Kyancutta school) and were also allocated section 43 Hundred of
Wannamana, making the family on adjoining properties thus making the most of any available machinery!
Later in 1920, Michael O’Loghlen surrendered his block, but returned in 1926 to take up land in the Hundred of
Mamblin. The O’Loghlen farms were farmed by the family for 83 years until Peter & Patricia retired to Wudinna in 1996.
The O’Loghlen farms is currently owned by the Heath family, sections
37 & 38 and also section 34 (Murphy’s).
Planned activities for Saturday 4th of October
McKenna’s section 43 is owned by O’Brien’s. Garry Fitzgerald owns in Kyancutta:
