2014·2015 All State Senior Chorus Information
Information and Requirements:
Auditions for the All State Senior Mixed Chorus' and All State
Senior Women's Chorus will be Saturday November 22, 2014.
Students must attend an independent (private), parochial, or public
school in Maryland and meet the class membership and grade des
ignations (grades 10 - 12) to be eligible to participate in the All State
auditions.
To participate in the Maryland All State activities, a student must
be enrolled in a chorus class. In high schools in which an alternative
scheduling program is operating, the student may participate in the
year in which he or she earns a full credit. Any questions should be
directed to the MMEA Executive Director by the Choral Teacher at
the numbers provided in this publication. Students and parents are
not to call.
There will be three audition sites:
1. Broadneck High School, Anne Arundel County 2. Calvert Hall College High School, Baltimore County
3. Urbana High School, Frederick County
G. F. Handel, Public Domain, SATB, key of C, quarter = 90. Music
must be obtained on the MMEA web page. The students will sing
the song in the correct octave. Public school teachers should obtain
a CD from their music office; Private school teachers should obtain
the CD from Jim Turk, DeMatha Catholic High School. Please
email him at [email protected] and include a mailing address.
Photocopies may be used. Music will not be supplied at auditions.
2. A Cappella Piece
Be prepared to sing from memory and without accompaniment
"Shenandoah" exactly as the notes and rhythms are printed and in
the correct octave. Students will sing in the following keys: Soprano
I: A major, Soprano II: F major, Alto: B-flat major, Tenor: G major,
Bass: C major. (See score in this pUblication). Students are expect
ed to use the expressive elements and the suggested tempo as indi
cated in the a cappella piece. The tonic chord, scale, and tonic chord
again will be played on the audition CD. Students must find their
starting pitch from the final chord.
B. Sight Reading:
Copy the application page as many times as needed. Please indi
cate your preferred audition site. If your students need to go to dif
ferent sites, use one form for each site requested. Send the complet
ed form in this publication to the MMEA Executive Director no
later than October 10, 2014. Use one form for every ten students
who will audition. No limit will be placed upon the number from
each school; however, please be sure that all singers meet the range
requirements on the next page.
In the event that a student arrives at the audition site with the
incorrect audition music prepared, the student will be given the cor
rect music and up to an hour to prepare the correct music before the
audition.
There will be divisi auditions for sopranos but not for altos, tenors,
or basses. If a voice change occurs after the registration, teachers
should contact the MMEA office as soon as possible. It is the poli
cy of MCEA that females should audition as soprano or alto singers.
In the event that a female student insists on auditioning for the tenor
part, she does so at her own risk. Teachers need to call the MMEA
Executive Director to get a consent form relieving MCEA of liabil
ity, which must be signed by a parent or guardian and submitted
, with the application by the deadline date.
Vocal evaluations will be based primarily on:
1. Vocal quality, blendability 2. Performance accuracy of sung selections 3. Ability to read and sing accurately and on pitch
