Match Notes
A new beginning… The 2002 meeting was the beginning for two important streaks. First, it
marked the genesis of a new scoring format in which the teams only get one point per match. Prior
to 2002, the format was based on a Nassau format in which teams fought for two points on the
front, back and overall 18 holes, for a total of six points per match. Second, that year was also the
start of a three-year winning streak for the Virginias, the same winning streak they are on entering
this year’s matches. Virginias owns a 7-5-0 lead dating back to 2002.
Perfection… Six players on each team’s roster have won all possible points in a year (# of years).
For the Carolinas: Rick Cloninger, Jim Grainger, Scott Harvey (2), Steve Liebler, Paul Simson (5),
and Brian Westveer. For the Virginias: Matt Chandler, Keith Decker (2), Jon Hurst, Dave Pulk, and
Scott Shingler.
2014 USGA champions… Each team boasts a recent USGA champion. In September, Scott
Harvey (Carolinas) captured the U.S. Mid-Amateur title and Pat Tallent (Virginias) won the U.S.
Senior Amateur.
When it rains, it… The singles matches have rained out three times since 1966: 1971, 1987, and
1993. The Carolinas hosted each of these matches. The home field advantage proved helpful in
1971 (see page two) and 1987 for the home team as the CGA posted victories, but harmful in
1993, as the Virginias came from behind to win by four points. Only one player has had to endure
all three rainouts: Vinny Giles.
Junior team matches…The Carolinas junior team won the Vinny Giles Trophy this summer
defeating the Virginias junior team by a score of 9 to 7 at River Landing GC in Wallace, N.C. With
the victory, Carolinas claimed its fourth consecutive win in the series—their longest win streak
since the first four years of the matches (1983-86). Carolinas leads the all-time series, 18-13-1 and
the series is 5-5-1 dating back to 2004.
Recent years… In last year’s matches, two evenly-matched teams produced a close final result as
the Virginias team notched a three-point victory (25½-22½) at Grandfather Golf and Country Club
in Linville, N.C.
Virginias owned a five-point advantage following first day four-ball and foursome matches, but
Carolinas answered to claim singles’ encounters, 13-11. On Saturday, Virginias’ regulars won
singles by one point (8½-7½), while Carolinas claimed senior singles’ matches by three points
(5½-2½).
Over the two days of matches, Virginias’ regulars outscored their opponents by six points (1913), while Carolinas’ seniors held a three-point advantage (9½-6½). The three-point margin
separating the teams marked the closest margin of victory for either squad since 2002 when the
event went to a one-point per match format.
Virginias retained the Captain’s Putter Trophy awarded to the champions and notched its third
straight victory in the matches. Virginias three-match victory run marks the second time in the alltime history of the event that Virginias has won three consecutive years, having also accomplished
the feat from 2002-04.
Host notes… The matches are making their first visit to The Club at Creighton Farms, a Jack
Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. A scenic par-72, 7,410-yard layout that opened in 2008,
Creighton Farms was one of two private courses in the world to achieve recognition by Golf
Digest, Golf Magazine, and Travel + Leisure Golf in the same season. In 2009, Golfweek selected
Creighton Farms among its “Best New Private Golf Courses.” Creighton Farms reflects the
Nicklaus trademark of a challenging design, focusing on course management strategy and
precision rather than power.

Captain’s Putter Match Results, 1955-1965
The individual records contained in these
pages were compiled from 1966 to
present due to the fact that those results
from previous years were unavailable.
The years 1955-1963 saw two matches
per year before changing to one per year
in 1964.
The individual results from 1966 are
available because of Hale Van Hoy, who
kept complete records after assuming
the duties of the Executive Director of the
Carolinas
Golf
Association.
The
individual results from 1955-1965 are
being sought, and when found, will be
added to this book. Currently, the CGA
has located results (individual and team)
for the years 1956-1959 (both matches)
but is still looking for 1955, and 19601965. If anyone has information that
could improve these archives, please
contact the CGA office. (910-673-1000)
