PRAYER UPON ENTERING: Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy
Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant that we may so hear them,
read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them that, by patience and comfort of
Your holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of
everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
WELCOME: We cordially welcome you to the Lord's Service. If you are
worshipping with us for the first time, the following suggestions may be
helpful to you:
Put your bulletin in the back of the hymnal. A panel will stick out on the
right side with the Order of Service. By doing this, both hands are free to
find the liturgy and hymns.
Large print bulletins and hearing devices are available. Please ask an usher
for assistance.
The Music Room, the room to your right before entering the sanctuary,
is available for parents with small children who need to step out during
the service. The service is televised in the Music Room.
The time before the service is a time of prayer and preparation to receive
the Lord’s gifts of salvation. In addition to prayer, look over the readings
and the words to the hymns during this preparation time.
Please turn off all cell phones and refrain from taking pictures during the
service. Thank you.
GUESTS AND THE LORD'S SUPPER: If you desire to commune, please speak
to one of the pastors before the service. Our altar is open to those who
confess oneness with us in doctrine, are members of our congregation or
sister congregations of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and are not
under church discipline in another congregation.
Stewardship Thought for the week...
MATTHEW 22:21 Then He said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the
things that are Ceasar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” So what is
Jesus saying? Doesn’t everything belong to God’ Yes – and God has a place
for everything. Some of what He gives us goes to Caesar. Some must come
back to the work of His Church. And some goes to support the families He
has given us. All belongs to God – and He has work for us to do with what He
has given us in the home, in the church, and in society.

SWD Missions Prayer for Week of October 19 – In your prayers this
week, please remember the work of
o Rev. Christian Ikanih, who boldly
takes the Gospel of Jesus Christ to many African immigrants in the
Milwaukee neighborhoods, and also Rev. Gui Kasongo, who reaches
the French-speaking

Pray for God’s blessings on these men and their ministry.
Isaiah 45:1–7 1Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right
hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts
of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed: 2“I will
go before you and level the exalted places, I will break in pieces the
doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, 3I will give you the
treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may
know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name.
4
For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by
your name, I name you, though you do not know me. 5I am the LORD, and
there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do
not know me, 6that people may know, from the rising of the sun and
from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is
no other. 7I form light and create darkness, I make well-being and create
calamity, I am the LORD, who does all these things.
1 Thessalonians 1:1–10 1Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of
the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:Grace to
you and peace. 2We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly
mentioning you in our prayers, 3remembering before our God and Father
your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our
Lord Jesus Christ. 4For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has
chosen you, 5because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also
in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what
kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. 6And you became
imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much
affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, 7so that you became an example
to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. 8For not only has the
word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but
your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say
anything. 9For they themselves report concerning us the kind of
reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to
serve the living and true God, 10and to wait for his Son from heaven,
whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to
come.
Matthew 22:15–22 15Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to
entangle [Jesus] in his talk. 16And they sent their disciples to him, along
with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and
teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s
opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. 17Tell us, then, what you
think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” 18But Jesus, aware of
their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? 19Show me
the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. 20And Jesus said
to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” 21They said, “Caesar’s.”
Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are
Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” 22When they heard it,
they marveled. And they left him and went away.
Notes on Today’s Divine Service
Treasures from the Church: “Although both Church and State are ordinances of
God, yet they must not be commingled. Church and State have entirely different aims.
By the Church, God would save men, for which reason the Church is called the
"mother" of believers Gal. 4:26. By the State, God would maintain external order
among men, "that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and
honesty," 1 Tim. 2:2. It follows that the means which the Church and State employ to
gain their ends are entirely different. The Church may not employ any other means
than the preaching of the Word of God, John 18:11, 36; 2 Cor. 10:4. The State, on the
other hand, makes laws bearing on civil matters and is empowered to employ for
their execution also the sword and other corporal punishments, Rom. 13:4.
Accordingly we condemn the policy of those who would have the power of the State
employed "in the interest of the Church" and who thus turn the Church into a secular
dominion; as also of those who, aiming to govern the State by the Word of God, seek
to turn the State into a Church.” – LCMS Brief Statement
Summary of the Readings: Plotting against Jesus, the Pharisees attempted “to
entangle him in his words” by asking about the payment of taxes to Caesar (Matt.
22:15). The Lord pointed to coins required for the tax, and He answered that we
should “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are
God’s” (Matt. 22:21). But if coins bearing the image of Caesar should be rendered to
him, then man — who is made in the image of God — must be rendered to the Lord.
That tax is paid for us by the Lord Jesus, the image of God in the flesh, by His selfoffering on the cross. And from His cross, as the Lord’s anointed, He reigns as the
true Caesar over all nations “from the rising of the sun and from the west” (Is. 45:6).
The Lord once called and anointed Cyrus “to subdue nations before him and to loose
the belts of kings” (Is. 45:1). Now by the preaching of the Gospel, “in power and in the
Holy Spirit” (1 Thess. 1:5), foreigners from all over the world are “turned to God from
idols to serve the living and true God” (1 Thess. 1:9–10).
Divine Service – Offertory: "What shall I render to the Lord?" Truth is, we have
nothing to render him. We brought nothing into this world, and we will take nothing
with us when we depart. As Jesus so poignantly tells us, our treasures are already
stored up for us in heaven (Matt. 6:19-21). There is, however, an offering that we do
make, both now in our worship and one day in heaven itself. It is the sacrifice of
thanksgiving as we call on the name of the Lord (Ps. 116:17). In the Apology to the
Augsburg Confession (Article 24), this eucharistic sacrifice is carefully distinguished
from the propitiatory sacrifice of Christ. The sacrifice for sins belongs to him alone.
Every time we try to grab that honor for ourselves, we come up short--very short. But
when we recognize our rightful place--that we are on the receiving end of God's
merciful goodness--then the sacrifice of thanksgiving cannot help but pour forth
from our lips as we give our thanks to the One who gave everything for us. The
giving of our firstfruits, whether it is money or possessions, time or talents, is also a
part of this sacrifice of thanksgiving. Our mouths cannot remain separated from the
rest of our bodies. If the thanksgiving is flowing from our lips, then it will also find
expression in the giving of our very selves for the sake of Christ and the neighbor.” –
LCMS: Parts of the Liturgy
Sermon: Caesar put his image and inscription on coins. If it is a coin that bears
Caesar’s image, what is it in this world that is made in God’s image and likeness and
bears His inscription? It’s you! In the beginning, God made man in His image and
likeness, and in Holy Baptism He has inscribed His name on you. You belong to Him.
The things of this world are not what God is interested in. His kingdom is not of this
world. He wants you.
