DEAR FRIENDS,
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.
This Sunday will be a great one to come to church! We’ll have our church service as usual, and
immediately afterward everyone is invited to stay for a while to help with a service or mission project. If you
can’t stay, or can’t stay for long, that’s okay. There will be nine different projects available, with physical
activity levels ranging from very low to strenuous.
We’ll have everything from a letter-writing project in the narthex to homebound visitation to a cookiebaking and delivery project to two different brush-clearing and cleanup projects. Plan to come and join in for
20 minutes or a few hours, and make a difference in many lives! Detailed information about Impact Sunday is
elsewhere in this Messenger.
Do you know the source of the quote at the top? Hint: it’s from the most-requested song on FM radio
in the 1970s. Still don’t know? Here’s how the song begins:
There's a lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for.
Musically, Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven from 1971 can be compared to part of our spiritual
journey in this life. It begins as a plaintive ballad and gradually builds as its internal conflict intensifies. At its
end, it explodes into a torrent of sound, and ends again on a plaintive, distantly hopeful note.
It’s a song about living with choices that brings to mind Matthew 22:21, “Jesus said, ‘Give to Caesar
what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.’” This is part of our reading for this Sunday.
Robin Haber will lead the Peace and Glory Ringers and guest musicians in a wonderful arrangement
of Stairway to Heaven, on Sunday, October 26.
See you in church, this Sunday, and next Sunday!

Wesley in Ireland - Part 3
In Limerick, Ireland, 1753, Wesley
preached to a group he referred to as the
Palatines. These were German Protestant
refugees who had been allowed to settle there a
generation before. The Methodist doctrine and
order took hold of them. From among them went
out Philip Embury and Barbara Heck, who, with
Robert Strawbridge, another native of Ireland,
were to plant Methodism in New York and
Maryland, and open the way for the widest
extension of Methodism in America.
FALL WORK DAY
With cooler temperatures coming it’s time to
do some much needed maintenance. On Saturday,
October 25, we will have an all church work day.
Beginning at 8 a.m. and going to Noon. Come for all
or part of the time.
We have a number of
opportunities, including several Gardening, Painting
and Plumbing projects. Please sign up in the patio
this Sunday.

NOTE FROM REV. JERI
“Heigh Ho! Heigh Ho! It’s off to work we
go.” We all know the song that seven small men
sang as they journeyed to work each day.
Although I did not sing this song, I did journey
last week for work. I traveled to Pasadena to
attend a three-day conference on Sticky Faith. For
those who are not familiar with this term, Sticky
Faith is a program designed to build lasting faith
concepts in youth while supporting their families
and the congregation around them.
There were 115 representatives from 25
denominationally diverse churches throughout
North America sharing how they intentionally
create and share lasting faith concepts for the
youth in their church while building
intergenerational relationships that are gospel
based and family supported. We shared stories of
how we invite the youth and the congregation to
build relationships that move beyond one hour of
worship time on Sundays.
This Sunday, October 19 we have the
opportunity to create some new stories of Sticky
Faith at St. Mark’s. Impact Sunday will allow
people of all ages to work together as we move
from being the life in the church to being the life
of the church. There are many projects to choose
from and many people who will do them. I
encourage you to take time during your chosen
project to get acquainted with the people you are
working with. Get to know their story and share
your story with them. Everybody has a story that
is funny, tell that one. Everybody has a story of
faith, tell that one. Everybody has a story to
share, tell that one. It is in the telling of our
stories that we build community that lasts longer
than one hour once a week. It is how we build a
community rich with Sticky Faith.
If you want to know more about Sticky
Faith, feel free to ask me. I’d be glad to tell you
that story.
