Go, Phil!
Congratulations to Phil Lachapelle
whose painting, "D'Agostini Farm,"
graces the cover of the current
issue of "Around Here" magazine.
There's also a very nice article
about Phil and his artwork.
We have enjoyed his art in our PAA
shows, as well as his expertise with
the audio/visual equipment at our
meetings! We're proud of you, Phil!
October Paint-Out
Save the date! The October paint-out will be the third
Wednesday of the month, October 15, from 10am to 2pm.
Vesla hasn't set the place yet because she's scouting out fall
colors. She will send out an e-mail with the details when
she's firmed them up. If you haven't been getting her e-mails
on the paint-outs, contact her to be put on her list! You can
reach her at [email protected].
Also, she's always looking for suggestions for places to have
the paint-outs. They must be free, have good parking, and
access to restrooms. If you have any suggestions, please let
her know.

October Program

October meeting. She'll discuss her techniques for achieving
such wonderful detail and color in her pastels.
President's Letter
It's been "back to my roots time" lately and I've been doing
some drawing. I had forgotten how good it feels to have that
pencil in my hand. Whenever I go back to pencil I am
reminded how magical this simplest of all media (in my mind,
anyway) can be.
There's nothing complicated about it - just the pencil and the
piece of paper. And I don't use anything fancy in the way of
pencils. In fact, my favorite is a simple .5mm mechanical
pencil with either HB or 2B lead. (I don't like sharpening
pencils!) Sometimes, just at the end of the drawing, I'll get
out my softer mechanical pencils - the ones with the 3B or
4B lead - for the very darkest of the darks, but 95% of the
drawing is with the HB and 2B.
What I especially like about the medium is how responsive it
is - the harder you press, the darker the line. And with the
lightest pressure you get almost nothing! Even the side of
the mechanical lead
that you use makes a difference. The edge of the lead that's
farthest from you produces the sharper edge on the line you
draw. The nearer edge produced a slightly feathered look.
This is very subtle, but it was cool when I discovered it.
Sometimes - rarely, but sometimes - I've felt that I could
even see color in those "tones of gray" drawings. Enough
rhapsodizing about drawing - back to those pencils!
And happy painting, drawing, sculpting, or whatever to all of
you...

preparing and planning his painting's scene,
to sectioning the "canvas"* into a foursquare,
before sketching with paint; building the
"Shapes of Color/Planes of Light" ..which he
learned from reading a 1920's art book by
Hawthorne.
Used to do "compulsive rendering but it
looked dead...now I draw just enough to get
something going, and then I push the lines all
around."
Used one 1" "bright" brush for most of this,
eventually he had a brush for light colors and
darker...
"Get the big things in, then modify with details
endlessly...or walk away"
Before Charles ran out of time, showed how
he puts in small "blobs of color" and makes
fine details appear upon the customers sitting
under the awning of the French Café scene
he painted today. - they and the tables they
sit at are painted in light shades "over and
into the dark shadows" under the awning -"My
city paintings are about the PEOPLE and The
LIFE in the city."
Charles loves being and painting outdoors
except when it's windy, 90% of his work is
outdoors. Only paints indoors the final parts of
the painting, after it has "jelled" from being 'at
the source.'
"Go to the source - all the answers are there,
right in front of you, and that's the point."
A photograph won't usually show you the
subtle shading in the shadows " & " I only use
my camera to remind me of where & the
season for a subject."
He agrees with Sargent that it's important to
'learn to find the middle tone" - from there just
dab the one dark and the one highlight." - and
he starts with paimting in the darks, mixing
color as he goes along.
Also he uses his homemade viewfinder of a
2/3 rectangle and a square; which are the
ratio of his two favorite formats
Charles paints on "multimedia art board" OR
makes his own using watercolor paper - then
he rubs shellac on the board to make it
accept the oil paint better.
Uses water soluble oil paints - currently

Holbein brand is his favorite - but believes
everything he does can be done with acrylics
Warns all of us to be extremely sensitive to
safe use of these various toxic materials, esp.
as he was a Physican for a full career, too!
He keeps ALL his gear as lightweight as
possible. Uses special boxes with dividers that carry
several wet boards home without rubbing
against each other - as he likes to stay out
painting for a few days at a time.
"Once you're there, take your time!" - "
Sometimes I don't even paint out there...it
doesn't happen right away..."
He stays 5x7 to 8/10 size as much as
possible, only sometimes goes to 16 x 20. A
5x7 takes 3-4 hours...other sizes more time,
of course...
" it's 'Spots of color' you arrange the way you
like - follow your instincts and get the
interesting shapes, because you picked the
subject for that."
"Seeing how you see - it's all a relationship of
what you see - keep learning! - everytime you
go out, you're learning - and, remember - it's
just a painting, after all; develop the ability to
absorb failure and move on...accept it... and
ENJOY it !"
Mr. Waldman warmly invited all PAA
members up to see his exhibition Oct.13 in
Sonora, and also to come paint with him on
Oct. 12th, a plein aire day he's hosting in
Dorington.
