Text: Luke 5:4-11 Reaction
to Miracles
Question of the Day: What
is my reaction when God does
something extraordinary?
For the believer there are
times when God does things
for us that are beyond explanation, and they leave us
stunned. This was the case in
the today’s text. Simon Peter
had loaned his boat to Jesus to
use as a platform so He could
teach the crowd that had gathered, and just after that Jesus
challenged Peter to launch his
small boat out into deep waters
and let down their nets. Now
Peter and his partners, James
and John, had been fishing all
night and had caught nothing—they were frustrated.
But after a little arguing
with the Lord, Peter decided to
obey, pushed his boat out into
deep water, and cast out his
net. Note that Jesus told them
to cast out their nets, not their
net, singular. But Peter obeyed
and the response was astonishing: the net was so full of fish
he couldn’t take all of them in
so he called his partners and
they filled both boats so full
that they were about to sink.
Now when Simon Peter saw
the huge catch of fish that filled
both boats, he fell down before
Jesus and said to Him, ‘Please
leave me O Lord: because I am
an unworthy sinful person.’
He said this because they all
were astonished at the huge
catch of fish they had taken in.
DAVID B.VIRTS
This included James and John,
Zebedee’s sons who were partners with Simon. Jesus then
said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid;
from this point on in your life
you will learn to catch men.’
And when they had brought
their boats to the land, they left
everything there and followed
Jesus.” (Verses 8-11)
What would my reaction be
if the Lord stepped into my occupation and showed His awesome power by giving an
increase that was astounding
and overwhelming? Simon
Peter’s reaction was to, in respect for Jesus, and in awe of
Him, fall down at His feet and
beg Him to leave. This experience of Peter made him aware
of his sinful condition (which is
a good place for any godly
man or woman to start in their
walk with Christ). Jesus’ awesome power—especially when
it is demonstrated in our workplace—makes us fall at His feet
aware of our sinful condition
and wanting Him to leave us.
All of us feel so unworthy of
His presence and of all that He
has done for us!
Peter spoke for all the rest of
the fishermen who watched
this miracle because it says “…
he was astonished, and all that
were with Him at the huge
catch of fish that had been
taken in.” Peter had a way of
verbalizing what everyone else
was thinking or wanted to say.
What, then, was Jesus response
to them—and specifically to
Peter? Don’t be afraid, he told
him; from this point on in your
life you will learn to catch men.
Jesus always has a larger plan
for us than the occupation that
we now face. The new “job”
that He gives us will have an
impact for eternity.
What
would be the response of these
fishermen after such an experience? They brought their boats
to the shore and left everything
to follow Him. Was that why
Jesus performed this miracle?
Prayer: Lord, what would
You have me to do that will
have an impact on people’s
lives for eternal results? Right
now I am in what seems like an
unimportant job, but I am also
aware that You have bigger
plans for me—plans that reach
beyond this life right into eternity. I am painfully aware of
my unworthiness, but if You
can cleanse and use Peter, I believe that You can and will
cleanse and use me for Your
kingdom—and so I leave all
and follow You.

The proceeding is a weekly commentary about the number one best selling book of all time: The Bible. While revered by millions,
the Bible is also one of the most controversial books in the World. While the Rutherford Reader takes no responsibility for the content,
it is their hope as well as mine that this study can help our readers learn to read, understand and enjoy “All the Books of the Bible.”

All the Books of the Bible
Volume 9: First Samuel Part 34
Continued from last week:
It may be that the charge to “prove yourself
a man” was given to a boy that was at the age
of BECOMING a man, namely at puberty:
“Now the days of David drew near that he
should die, and he charged Solomon his son,
saying: ‘I go the way of all the earth; be strong,
therefore, and prove yourself a man.’” (1 Kings
2:1-2 NKJV) Yet it may be that David wants his
son to prove himself to be the man he already
is.
Solomon appears to have needed someone
of an adult age to speak for his declaration as
king, namely Bathsheba: “So Nathan spoke to
Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying,
‘Have you not heard that Adonijah the son of
Haggith has become king, and David our lord
does not know it? Come, please, let me now
give you advice, that you may save your own
life and the life of your son Solomon. Go immediately to King David and say to him, 'Did you
not, my lord, O king, swear to your maidservant, saying, ‘Assuredly your son Solomon shall
reign after me, and he shall sit on my throne?’”
(1 Kings 1:11-13 NKJV)
Adonijah, who was much older, did not appear to need such help: “Then Adonijah the son
of Haggith exalted himself, saying, ‘I will be
king’; and he prepared for himself chariots and
horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
(And his father had not rebuked him at any time
by saying, ‘Why have you done so?’ He was
also very good-looking. His mother had borne
him after Absalom.)” (1 Kings 1:5-6 NKJV)
Solomon spent much of his life engaged in
activity with women: “And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart.”
(1 Kings 11:3 NKJV) This extensive duration of
having wives and concubines may have begun
as soon as he reached the age of puberty, and
continued until he died. If he did have wives
and concubines at this early age, then one of the
first sons he had was Rehoboam, who was born
the year before Solomon assumed the throne.
Solomon reigned for forty years: “The period
that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.” (1 Kings 11:42 NKJV)
Therefore Solomon already had his son Rehoboam that was one year old when Solomon
assumed the throne. The fact that he may have
13-16 when he sired his first son may show why
this because the downfall of faith for Solomon
as he was exposed to this type of activity at an
incredibly young age which is entirely inappropriate for normal development.
Solomon was age 13-17 when he took the
throne.
It appears that David may have been at least
54 years old when Solomon was born:• David
was 37 when he reigned over all Israel: “David
was thirty years old when he began to reign, and
he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned
over Judah seven years and six months, and in
Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all
Israel and Judah.” (2 Samuel 5:4-5 NKJV) David
appears to have spent a number of years taking
many wives and before the adultery with
Bathsheba: “David took more concubines and
wives from Jerusalem, after he had come from
Hebron. Also more sons and daughters were
born to David.” (2 Samuel 5:13 NKJV)
David appears to have spent a number of
years conquering the armies of the countries surrounding Israel before his adultery with
Bathsheba: “After this it came to pass that David
attacked the Philistines and subdued them. And
David took Metheg Ammah from the hand of
the Philistines. Then he defeated Moab … David
also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king
of Zobah … When the Syrians of Damascus
came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David
killed twenty-two thousand of the Syrians.” (2
Samuel 8:1-6 NKJV)
Next week we will continue the story of King
David in 1st Samuel, but we will have a more
complete understanding now that we know the
players involved.
To be continued…
