THE MASTER’S MESSAGE Brethren, This month the long days and warm temperatures of summer give way, and a new season begins as we transition to the long and cold nights of winter. The season of autumn contains many customs and traditions while the celebrations of Halloween and Thanksgiving are eagerly anticipated by both young and old alike. These traditions are so deeply embedded that we sometimes forget their origins. During the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, bonfires were lighted and masks were worn to ward off roaming spirits. All Hollow’s Eve was designated in the eighth century by Pope Gregory III to honor the dead martyrs and saints. Also celebrated are many harvest festivals such as Succoth festival in the Jewish faith, where families gather to give thanks and share meals. For many people the time of gathering the grains and fruits of the harvest was a time of immense joy as they rejoiced and gave thanks for their bounty. In America, our national holiday of Thanksgiving was incepted in the year 1621 the Pilgrims of Plymouth Colony shared a great feast with Native American Indians to give thanks to the harvest that was reaped. These concepts of feasts and giving thanks with friends and family should seem very familiar to each of us as Freemasons. In the 18th century in England, Masons met in taverns such as the Goose and Gridiron Ale-house and The Rummer and Grapes Tavern. These meetings would be held in upper or back rooms. Designs would be laid down on the floor in chalk and afterward mopped clean. When the business of the meeting was completed, the brethren would then enjoy a great feast with many toasts and songs to give thanks. The genius of Freemasonry was and is very simple in that it brought together men of diverse backgrounds and faiths in a convivial atmosphere, devoid of religion and politics. This season my brother, let us reflect on what our purpose as Masons should be, not just in our Lodge but everywhere in our Institution as well. Look forward to coming to our meetings to spend time in fellowship and good cheer to give thanks to the manifold blessings and comforts we enjoy at our Lodge. We are very fortunate.
