Bulky items (stoves, mattresses, and furniture) are collected only
twice a year (spring and fall). Please do not place oversize items
at the bins any other time of the year. Staff are regularly called
to clean out the bins which are expensive for the municipalities
to maintain. Certain items, such as tires, hazardous materials,
or fridges without the official “refrigerant-free” sticker attached
are NEVER ACCEPTABLE at the bins – please contact us for

organics into a rich soil amendment called compost.
Farmers and gardeners alike use this compost to improve the health of their soil. Unfortunately, plastics,
metal, glass and garbage are still ending up in green carts on a daily basis. At the composting facility,
these materials can cause personal injury, damage machinery and ultimately ruin the finished product.
Before you chuck it – check it!
Green carts are only for food waste, yard waste and soiled papers

Recycling at Rental Properties
Recycling and composting are provincial and municipal law in Nova Scotia and are the reason why we sort
waste into garbage, recycling and compost. But home owners aren’t the only ones who have to sort their
waste properly; apartment dwellers have the same responsibility too.
What tenants need to know about waste:
Sorting
• It’s your responsibility to sort waste into
recycling, compost and garbage – always
• F
ollow sorting and packaging rules carefully
to ensure bags are collected on garbage day
• B
etween collections, keep waste stored in
the building’s designated storage. Unsure
of the storage location? Ask your landlord.
They must provide an area for storage
• N
ot enough room in your apartment for all
the bags needed? Get creative with your
space! Save counter space with an ice cream
bucket for compost. Use smaller sized blue
bags (20”x22”) and hang on the door of a
storage cupboard.
• Items too large to fit in a garbage bag are
only collected at Spring and Fall Clean-up
Move-out time
• Move-out waste needs to be sorted the same
as everyday waste. The items you recycle will
reduce waste in landfill and keep you in good
standing with your landlord.

We know you love to use them - Kitchen Catchers and grocery bags to line your kitchen garbage can...but if you’re putting

Leave those leaves alone!
We call it yard waste, but it’s not really waste. Leaves and pine needles
are a valuable resource. The great thing is; you can easily manage
most of them on your own property with a little help from Mother Nature.
Mulching leaves is probably the easiest alternative to bagging up leaves
for roadside collection. Using a mower to shred leaves greatly reduces
volume and exposes more leaf surfaces to speed up decomposition.
Shredded leaves knifed (lightly dug) into annual flower or vegetable
gardens make a good organic fertilizer and soil conditioner.
