Introduction to teachers and parents
This packet was prepared as an introduction to the Arabic letters.
The curriculum was set to make learning fast and easy.
The packet uses the following method in teaching the letters:
- Teaching the the first sounding part of the letter, such as Da for
Dal, and Ma for Meem to make the letters easier for the
children to connect in forming words.
- Each letter is taught in its different forms in the Arabic writing,
beginning, middle and end of a word.
- They practice identifying each letter at a time by coloring, and
writing along the dotted lines. Parents and teachers are
encouraged to make learning the letters easy and fun, by
connecting the sound of the letter to a word that starts with it
within their surrounding life.
- They then are asked to identify that particular letter within
words that have the letter. After that, they go to a harder step
and search for it within a sentence that does not have the
consonants‫حركات‬. They then move on for a harder level and
search for it within words of the Quran. Parents at home are
encouraged to do the same at home on pages of the Quran,
preferably very large font Quran.
For younger children (ages 3, 4 and most 5 year olds) help them
identify the words within the sentences by underlining the
words that have the letters, to give them a hint. Most older
children ages 6 and up should be able to find the letters within
the sentences easily.
- The children then are taught to sound the letter that they had
learned with the previous learned letters in a three lettered
word. They may sound the words as broken up, that’s it is okay,
its learning how to identify and read a word using that letter.
Parents are encouraged to repeat those words at home.
Overcoming expected hardships
2
Making Reading Quranic Arabic Easy, By Aysha Wazwaz, http://ayshawazwaz.wordpress.com
- Confusion between ‫ ث‬،‫ت‬. Make it easy by saying Ta, has a TWO
dots on the TOP as a song, repeating over and over.
- The letters ‫ خ‬،‫ج‬, say a short story for the ‫خ‬, the ‫ خ‬was hit over its
head and yelled ‫أخ أخ‬. Or whatever that may make him connect
the picture of it to something he may make up from his/ her
imagination
- The letters ‫ ز‬،‫ ر‬،‫ ذ‬،‫ د‬the ‫ د‬and ‫ ذ‬are bending, stressing on the D in
bending to connect. The letter ‫ ر‬is like a slide.
- Letters ‫ ظ‬،‫ ط‬،‫ ض‬،‫ ص‬seem to be the hardest letters to identify for
kids. Teachers and parents may be asked to repeat the lesson
and take it slowly on these groups of letters.
o Tips: ‫ ص‬is like the letter ‫ س‬except you make an oval shape
with your mouth. The letter ‫ ض‬is similar to the letter ‫د‬
except you make an oval shape with your mouth. The
letter ‫ ط‬is similar to the letter ‫ ت‬except you make an oval
shape with you mouth. The letter ‫ ظ‬is like the ‫ ذ‬but make
an oval shape with your mouth.
- The letter ‫ ع‬for non Arabic speakers, ask the teacher to help you
identify its place of articulation. Ask the kids to pretend making
a deep mouth wash, and feel the place of articulation. Then add
an “A” and try sounding the sound you made during the mouth
wash pretend.
- The letter ‫ ق‬is different the ‫ك‬, most non Arabic speaking
children confuse the two. Ask the child to remember the sound
of a monkey. The ‫ ق‬is bellower than ‫ ك‬in its place of articulation.
- The letter ‫ هـ‬with its different shapes ‫ ـه‬،‫ ه‬،‫ ـهـ‬،‫ هـ‬are usually
forgetting, because of their rare shapes and use. So take your
time in helping your child identify their shapes.
- Many kids tend to confuse ‫ هـ‬and ‫ و‬because of the circle shape
in them, so repeat them and teach the child to notice the empty
space after the ‫ و‬since it does not connect from the right.

Other helping tips:
- Buy other Arabic writing books, for children to play with during
their play time.
- Review the letters taught in class at least 15 minutes each day.
- If your child was never in a school session, start out with a two
or three minute session between you and him/her. Using timers
where they see that the session won’t take long will help, then
add a minute to his time when ready.
- Encouraging them to sit with you and review by promising them
and fulfilling the promise to have them do their favorite thing.
- Use body language to give hints for the sound of the letter, in
order to make him/ her feel that they were the ones to do it on
their own.
- Choose the right time to teach him/her not during his favorite
cartoon time, or when his best friend is over for example.
- Search in the App store on your Iphone or Ipad for Arabic letters
programs, and let the child learn reading and writing. No need
to purchase one if you don’t have one, this packet and other
methods will do inshaa Allah.
- Watch YouTube videos and songs for the Arabic alphabet, try
repeating the same song to help him learn it.
- Visit http://arabicplayhouse.com/ website as an example.
Important pronunciation rules
- First rule: Fat and thin letters
Arabic letters are generally pronounced with a smile shaped mouth
which we call thin or
letters. There are only a few letters that
must be pronounced with a long shaped mouth, which we call fat
letters.
These letters are
4
Making Reading Quranic Arabic Easy, By Aysha Wazwaz, http://ayshawazwaz.wordpress.com
Therefore, the letter ‫ ب‬since it is one of the thin letters, it is not
pronounced as ‫ ب‬as in Butter, but is pronounced ‫ ب‬as in banana.
Verses the letter ‫ خ‬since it is from the fat letters it is pronounced as
a ‫ خ‬with a long shaped mouth.
- The “‫ ”ا‬depends on the letters before it. If before the letter ‫ ـا‬،‫ ا‬we
have thin letter, the "‫ "ا‬has the sound of an “A” as in apple. Yet, if
the letter before the “‫ ”ا‬had one of the fat letters before it, it would
be a thick “a” as the letter “o” in the word John.
Common pronounciation mistakes:
- Pronunciating the letter ‫ ث‬as a “sa”, the right way is “tha” as in
the letter “three”.
- Pronunciating the letter “‫ ”ج‬as “g” as in golden. The correct way is
to pronounciate it in a heavy form as “John”
- Pronounciating the letter “‫ ”ح‬as “ha” in heart. The correct way is
that the letter ‫ ح‬comes from a deeper place than ha as in heart.
- Pronounciating the letter ‫ خ‬as ka, the correct way is that it is
actually from a deeper place of articulation than that letter ‫ك‬
- Pronounciating the letter ‫ ذ‬as za, which is a very common mistake,
the correct way pronunciation is by saying as the letter “th” in the
word “there”.
- Pronounciating the ‫ ص‬as “swa”, it sounds very similar to the “sa”
except make sure you have an oval shaped mouth (fat letter) during
pronunciation.
- The letter ‫ض‬, it is very similar to the letter ‫ د‬or Da, except add an
oval shaped mouth to sound it right. The same goes for the letter ‫ط‬,
it sounds like a ‫ ت‬except add an oval round shaped mouth to it.
The letter ‫ ظ‬is alo within that category, similar to `‫ ذ‬as in “there”
but at an oval shaped mouth to it.
