on the calendar. A special word of encouragement is extended to our Grade 10 students who are entering into their final
term at the College. It won’t be long before they are commencing preparation for their final exams in November!
Opportunities
With the beginning of a new term comes the chance for boys to get involved in many extra- curricular pursuits. I encourage
all boys to be involved in at least one activity during this final term. Information around this is available on the Sport
website or through this newsletter or the daily messages on campus. I wish all students who are getting involved this term
all the best.
Parents and Friends Associations
I take this opportunity to thank the Parents & Friends Associations on both campuses for their continued support during
Term Three and encourage you all to support the initiatives at both campuses during Term Four.
At Austins Ferry preparations are well under way for the annual Fair on Monday November 10 and I ask that both parents
and students keep an eye on the Star for all the upcoming activities.
A reminder that the raffle tickets are due back shortly. I encourage you to get them into the office as soon as possible. There
are also a number of grocery free dress days that are explained in this newsletter.
Holiday Service
During the recent holiday break we had a number of students involved in different service activities around Hobart. Boys
were involved with the Edmund Rice camps and St Vincent de Paul camps and a small group of students volunteered with
Rotary to support a function held for Dr Fiona Woods at the UTAS Medical Research Centre. I would like to thank all the
boys who gave so willingly of their time and encourage them to log their service hours with Mr Lapolla.
SATIS Athletics
The culmination for the senior athletics team occurs this Saturday at the Domain Athletics Centre. The State Carnival
begins at 9am and will conclude around 4.30pm. We wish the team all the best for the day. Students are encouraged to
attend and join the cheer squad to support the team and are reminded they must wear a uniform item that identifies with St
Virgil’s.

Gospel Spirituality
We invite all people into the story of
Jesus and strive to make his message of
compassion, justice and peace a living
reality within our community.
Welcome back to all members of the community for the commencement of Term
Four. I would like to commend all boys for the way in which they have presented
themselves on their return and in particular their hair styles. Term Four is special
for a number of reasons, and some of the particulars to note are as follow:
-
Grade 8 Outdoor Education trips will be ongoing throughout the term.
Dates have been published and are available from the website.
House Beach Bonanza Day will be conducted next Wednesday October
22. See below for details.
The school will be closed next Thursday and Friday October 23 and 24 for
the Show Day break.
Wednesday October 29 and November 5 are free dress days. Boys are
asked to bring a grocery item and luck box items for the Fair. More
information to come.
House Beach Bonanza Day – Wednesday October 22, Seven Mile Beach
Next Wednesday all students will be heading to Seven Mile Beach to participate in
HBB Day. As the boys know, this event is one of the last opportunities for them to
gain vital house points for the House Cup, and as the points are so close, it will
probably determine the winner. The day is designed so all boys are involved in a

number of enjoyable team challenges. The following arrangements have been outlined to the students:
UNIFORM: Students should wear a house coloured shirt and board shorts to school. As this is a House event appropriate
coloured clothing is encouraged. If possible, they should also bring an alternative bag to the school bag. A hat, towel &
sunscreen are vital. Boys need to make sure they have a change of dry clothes as they cannot travel on the bus in their wet
bathers.
LUNCH: BYO Food and drinks – there will be no other options available.
GENERAL OUTLINE:
 Students travel to school as normal with the exception of those who have returned notes to their Pastoral
Care Teacher outlining other arrangements.
 Buses depart at approx. 9:00am to transport boys to the venue.
 Buses should arrive at the carpark at Seven Mile Beach, near Pines Resort, at approx. 9.40am
 Activities commence around 10.00am.
 Boys will rotate through activities such as Rafting, Beach Flags, Ramp Building, Run Swim Run, Beach
Sports and a free swim. Suitably qualified Life Saving staff will be provided.
 Lunch and clean-up 1.30pm – 2.00pm
 Announcement of results 2.00pm
 Dismissal to buses at around 2.10pm. There will also be buses returning to Austin’s Ferry.
 Buses will go on reverse route, similar to Athletics Day. Students are to travel on normal bus straight to
home.
If you have any questions about the day please don’t hesitate to contact the college.
Boys and Classroom Behaviour
I have written previously about the impact on learning that poor behaviour has. The evidence is very clear, and as was
outlined in a House of Representatives report on boys learning outcomes, there is a clear correlation between behavioural
problems and learning outcomes. The evidence suggests that one problem may lead to another; in other words for some
boys behavioural difficulties lead to learning difficulties, while for others learning difficulties lead to behaviour problems. Of
even greater concern for me is when this poor behaviour impacts on the learning of others.
The House of Representative report also highlighted the impact that parental awareness and support for the school can
have in dealing with these poor behaviours. The research clearly shows that when a boy is getting the same messages at
home as he is at school the opportunity for change is increased significantly.
For some boys Term Four can be a challenge and I include the information above with the understanding that we are about
teaching and learning, and giving every boy an opportunity to grow is a shared experience between and home. As always we
appreciate the support of parents in this regard.

COLLEGE MINISTER
BR PETER FLINT
Tuesday morning was a bit chilly and I judged it was a "9 litre morning”. So I brewed 9 litres of milo and set up my mobile
stall. I judged right!
During a lull in business, I looked around the quadrangle and became thoughtful about what I saw. There were 300 to 400
boys present, all engaged with one another in various friendship groups. Just conversation about whatever. It was an
animated but peaceful scene with lots of life being shared.
Then this morning during our community prayer I read from St Paul:
"What the Spirit brings is very different: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and selfcontrol. There can be no law against things like that, of course”. Galatians 5
And it struck me that that was what I was seeing in the quadrangle before school in those 300 to 400 boys - love, joy,
peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-control.
The Sprit of God in the lives of those boys and in the life of the College.

COLLEGE PSYCHOLOGIST
MRS ALI MORSE
Anglicare’s 1,2, 3 Magic Course and Engaging Adolescents Course
It is very exciting to be able to offer two courses run by Anglicare to our St Virgil’s parents and staff. Parenting is one of the
most important roles we will ever undertake and at times it can be challenging. These courses can help us to remove the
trial and error of parenting and assist us in successfully raising children with whom we can enjoy happy and respectful
relationships.
You might consider the following questions:
 Would you like to be able to manage your child’s behaviour without arguing and/or yelling?
 Would you like to learn how to use ‘emotion coaching’ to encourage positive behaviour in your child?
 Would you like to effectively manage challenging behaviours?
 Would you like to hear what are reasonable expectations to hold about your adolescent?
 Would you like to build a better relationship with your adolescent?
 Would you like to learn skills to help you tackle tough conversations with your adolescent?
If you answered ‘yes’ to any of the above questions, this course may be something you would be interested in attending.
We think that this information will be invaluable to the parents in our community. St Virgil’s College is offering workshops
for parents of primary and secondary aged students free of charge.

JUNIOR SCHOOL
MR ANDREW PINELLI, HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL
“We don’t grow when things are easy; We grow when we face challenges.”

Last Day of Term
What an uplifting atmosphere surrounded the Junior School Campus on the last day of Term 3. All boys really got into the
spirit of Footy (Sports) colours. The weather also stayed acceptable (enough) for a number of Grade 6 boys and teaching
staff to take on the ice bucket challenge. Enough money was also raised to see Mr Messer have a big bucket of icy water
poured all over him by a surprisingly enthusiastic Mrs Messer!!! Thank you to the SRC boys who have organised these
activities and to all families who have generously supported the fund raising efforts connected to these activities.
Term 4
It has been great to see all the boys return to school bubbling with energy again as we move on into a very busy Term 4.
There are many opportunities on offer this term for all boys to shine and I encourage them to tackle them all
enthusiastically.
Uniform
It has been very pleasing to see almost every boy remember that during Term 4 all Junior School Campus boys are to wear
their bucket hats at recess and lunch times. They are in plentiful supply in the Clothing Pool if families need a spare.
Holiday Maintenance
During the holiday break a number of projects were undertaken to keep the Junior School Campus looking good.
 The bank area behind the Grade 5 classrooms was professionally cleared. Mrs Graves and the Green Thumbs Boys
will install treated pine tiering and undertake some planting in the coming weeks.
 A new handrail was installed on the stair landing between the top court and the senior classrooms.
 New treads were painted onto all the stairs around the campus.
ICAS Assessments
Earlier in the year all boys from Grades 3 – 6 completed the Maths assessment. Unfortunately, there were no distinction
results but the boys performed well in this assessment with some pleasing results by:

PAT Assessments
This week, all boys have been undertaking the annual ACER PAT (Progressive Attribute Tests) in Comprehension,
Vocabulary, Spelling and Mathematics. This year the assessments have been online which has caused some technical issues
with the test provider. The boys are to be commended on their mature approach to undertaking these assessments. Once
they have been finished, the staff will commence interrogating the results and plan for the remainder of the year as well use
the data to prepare for 2015.
Grade 6 Canberra Trip
It was pleasing to have every boy and at least one of his parents accompany him to the information session for the
upcoming Canberra Trip for Grade 6. Whilst there are some anxious boys, and a few parents, everyone left a little more
relaxed.
JSSATIS Sports
This term we have entered two teams in the Grade 3/4 JSSATIS T-Ball and three teams in the JSSATIS Touch Football
competitions. Once again a big thank you to our parent (and staff) volunteers who make themselves available as coaches or
managers so that the boys get these opportunities. Good luck to all the teams.
Basketball
This weekend we have two teams entered in each of the Grade 3/4 and Grade 5/6 Southern Tasmanian Primary Schools
Basketball Tournament which will be held at Clarence Basketball stadium and the Moonah Basketball stadium. Once again
thank you to our coaches and managers and best of luck to all our teams. Results will be available next week.

HEALTH AND WELLBEIN G
MR JUSTIN MAHONEY
Health and Physical Education
Next week Grade 8 students will commence a unit on Relationships and Sexual Health during their Health lessons. The
program is based on the framework ‘Growing Towards Wholeness’ (GTW) which was commended by the previous
Archbishop of Hobart, Adrian Doyle and recommended by the former Director of Catholic Education, Dr Patricia
Hindmarsh. It also uses the Australian Curriculum: HPE and the Shine SA program (endorsed by Catholic Education
Tasmania) to ensure it is age appropriate.
GTW is designed to assist the parents of students who attend Catholic schools, Catholic school educators, and parishes in
the Archdiocese of Hobart to support what is already being achieved in schools, and to guide the future development of
programmes in accordance with current best practice. It offers a mandate for schools to act in accordance with the
teachings of the Church, and to draw upon contemporary information and teaching practices to assist parents and parishes
as they carry out their responsibilities to bring their children to a true and full understanding of human sexuality.
Information regarding the policy document and content framework of the program can be found at
http://www.catholic.tas.edu.au/publications/other-documents. If you wish, you may withdraw your son from the ‘Growing
Towards Wholeness’ programme, in which case alternative work will be supplied. If this is the case, you will need to notify
Mr Mahoney via email at [email protected] prior to your son’s next Health lesson.

Sailing - The Admiral Signals!
One of my great sailing photos!

The boy was 12 years old and in Grade 7 at the time. He is on a $10,000 dinghy, capsized in the middle of the Derwent
River. He has checked that his crew hand is okay and he is starting the righting procedure. He can handle the situation.
This was my screen saver for many months as it captured some of the opportunities sailing presents. Among them is the
opportunity to confront the sudden mishap and recover from it - alone; to cope with the unexpected difficulty alone; to face
extreme conditions and get through them; to be responsible for others. He also learns that he cannot fight the wind and the
wave, he has to learn to read them and use them to go where he would. And on I could go.
Sailing is good for the personal growth of young people. That is one of the reasons I like to be involved.
In addition for me, being close to creation is to be close to the Creator, and that is a good place to be.
Back to business!
Learn to Sail Starts Next Monday.
Anyone interested in trying out sailing is welcome to come down to AFYC after school, even just for a look.
If you are interested, contact Br Peter 0439 738327.
