The Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers
Description
Specialized training in geriatrics and geriatric mental
health is essential to meet the healthcare and educational demands of the growing elderly population.
It is also important that the current and future workforce understand the diversity of this population
(e.g., ethnicity, race, geography, income, language
ability) and be prepared to participate with interprofessional teams in a range of clinical settings (e.g.,
nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospitals).
The Consortium of New York Geriatric Education
Centers (CNYGEC) pursues the objectives set forth
by Health Resources and Services Administration
(HRSA) through a multi-faceted, competencybased, clinically oriented training initiative; drawing
on the alliances of our CNYGEC partners, geared
to interprofessional training of health professionals,
students, and faculty throughout New York State.
We train healthcare professionals in the diagnosis,
treatment and prevention of acute, chronic and lifethreatening diseases, disabilities and other health
problems of older New Yorkers.
To implement this comprehensive training
initiative, CNYGEC draws on the extensive
experience of our three academic partners,
which include Brookdale Department of
Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine of the Icahn
School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York
University’s College of Nursing, and Columbia
University’s Stroud Center for Quality of Life and
Aging. CNYGEC is also part of the NYS
Coalition of GECs, which includes Finger Lakes
GEC longstanding and successful partnership
of the original Columbia University-New York
GEC and the Hunter/Mount Sinai GEC.
Audience
This program is intended for healthcare and social
service providers and faculty from a range of disciplines and areas of expertise.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants
will be able to:
• Improve the training of health professionals in
geriatrics;
• Develop and disseminate evidence-based
curricula relating to the treatment of health
problems of the elderly;
• Train or retrain faculty to provide geriatrics
instruction
• Increase the knowledge of health professionals
in geriatric mental health issues; and
• Provide students new and expanded clinical
training in geriatrics in nursing homes, chronic
and acute disease hospitals, ambulatory care
centers, and senior centers.

Participation in this program reflects an individual's commitment to enhancing the care and services
provided to older adults. Geriatric Scholar Certificate seminars are aimed at improving and expanding
geriatric healthcare, particularly for low-income, multi-ethnic and underserved older adult populations.
Participants are awarded the Geriatric Scholar Certificate after completing a five-day
interdisciplinary program consisting of three “Core Days” and two “Elective Days”of training,
which are available through face-to-face and online learning opportunities.
CoreTraining Training hours: 8:00am – 4:00pm unless noted otherwise.

through a grant from the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services, HRSA (Federal Grant
#UB4HP19194) to Icahn School of Medicine at
Mount Sinai, Brookdale Department of
Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine.

It is the policy of Icahn School of Medicine at Mount

Meeting the Needs of NYS Rural Aged: How Geriatric Education Center
Programming Builds Capacity for Rural Providers, Staff, Faculty, and Students
CNYGEC and the Finger Lakes GEC are co-presenting a workshop during the annual
SSA Annual Meeting. The workshop will provide practical information and tools about
strategies, and resources for educating primary care providers and staff, as well as
gerontology and healthcare students and faculty, who work in or are preparing for
careers in rural areas.

ONLINE LEARNING (Core and Elective Days)
The CNYGEC is pleased to provide online learning opportunities through
the E-learning Center of Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing at the
New York University College of Nursing.
Core Day 1, Core Day 2, Core Day 3, Electives Modules and an Alzheimer's Disease
elective day option are available through the e-learning center. Please check in periodically at www.hartfordign.org/education/cnygec to see when new modules are available.
All the online modules can be accessed online at any time. If you choose to receive
a 35-hour Geriatric Scholars Certificate, a combination of any six offerings must be taken in
order to be awarded one full day toward the Geriatric Scholar Certificate. All offer a video
podcast and a PDF of slides. Nursing contact hours are available and for a small fee.
Contact hours for nursing are provided by NYU College of Nursing Center for Continuing
Education in Nursing, which is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education
by the American Nurses' Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation
CME credits are not available for online learning.
FACULTY TRAINING
The Geriatrics Education Center (GEC)
Faculty Development Collaborative
(160 hours)
This program is geared to improving skills in teaching, leadership and project development
and implementation for academic and clinical faculty. A number of teaching and learning
methodologies are used including self-study, synchronous and asynchronous webinars,
virtual journal club and case-based discussions, career development with mentoring, and
completion of an individual capstone project related to a curriculum or quality improvement
initiative. The collaborative draws on resources and expertise from the Consortium of NY
GECs, New Jersey GEC, Gateway GEC of Missouri and Illinois, and the Central Plains
GEC of Kansas.
A program certificate will be awarded by the Collaborative upon satisfactory completion of
the 160-hour curriculum.
This program does not offer CME credits.
