From the Headmaster
S
everal years ago the College
Board set up the Trinity
College Foundation to raise
funds for the betterment of Trinity
College.
One of the main objectives
of the Foundation, is to ensure
that they uphold the College’s
efforts to support the poor and
the marginalised. This parallels so
well the philosophy that Blessed Edmund
Rice had and which has continued for
over a hundred years through the work
of the Christian Brothers, both at the
Terrace and at Trinity College.
The Foundation has made the decision
to support students to attend the College,
rather than using the money to build
facilities, as they believe this is their
chance to shape the future.
The Headmasters’ Bursaries are the
Foundation’s way of ensuring, that
students that would not normally be
able to access a Trinity education, have
this opportunity.
Initially we have chosen three of
our iconic Headmasters, each of whom
encapsulates the spirit of Trinity College,
highlighting our commitment to service
and our alignment with the poor and the
marginalised.
Maybe you remember one of these
Headmasters and you would like to
honour their work. I ask that you seriously
consider supporting this Scholarship
project. You have the opportunity to
offer a once off donation or support a
young man through his entire education
at the College.
The choice is yours – help us to shape
the future.

Br J A Kelly 1960–1965 & 1978–1984
B
r J A (Tony) Kelly, inaugural Headmaster of Trinity
College, is renowned as an outstanding educator
whose foresight saw the establishment of Trinity
College which today is a leading school in boy’s education.
He served two terms as Headmaster of Trinity College, 19621965 and 1978-1984.
Br Kelly was an exceptional leader and teacher who
believed that boys should have educational opportunities
in all the disciplines: religion, academic, cultural and
sport. He built a College that not only provided strong
Christian values and academic standards but also laid the foundations for
future sporting and music programmes.
When planning the new Trinity College Br Kelly designed a modern school
which catered for the education of boys, while at the same time challenging
the traditional ways of building and design. The Trinity College Chapel is a fine
example of Br Kelly’s progressive thinking. Centrally located so it is pivotal to
life at the College, the Chapel with its unique circular design was considered an
innovation in that era, but is now a design used in many places of worship.
With a love of music and tradition, in the same year that Trinity College was
opened Br Kelly saw the Trinity College Irish Pipes and Drums established. Also
knowing that boys require space for sport and recreation, Br Kelly overcame the
shortage of space at Trinity College when the College was granted 40 acres of
Clontarf land which was developed into the Waterford playing fields.
Foremost, Br Kelly was a teacher whose greatest passion was for the subjects
of Latin, Mathematics and the sciences. To teach these difficult subjects and to
encourage his students in an inspiring and informative way, Br Kelly wrote his
own teaching texts for Mathematics and Chemistry which were later published
for use at other schools
Br Kelly is held in high esteem by all and is well known for “His affection for,
and interest in, all things Trinity”.
In the 1987 Queens Birthday Honours list, Br J A Kelly was awarded the
OAM, the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to education.
Br J R Carrigg 1966–1971
B
r J R (John) Carrigg, second Headmaster at Trinity
College, 1966-1971, is a scholar and inspirational
educator who believes in life-long learning and that
education is for building character as well as knowledge. He
also believes in a quality religious education where young
people are taught and encouraged to live by values which will
guide them throughout life.
Br Carrigg encouraged his students to participate and
enrich themselves in all that school life had to offer and to
achieve high levels of academic success. He installed the
original Trinity College Academic Honour Boards in 1969.
As a teacher and scholar of the English language Br Carrigg’s most fulfilling
time was in the classroom teaching English Literature, the subject closest to his
heart. He is quoted as saying “The English language is probably the greatest gift
the English people have given the world”.
Br Carrigg worked tirelessly to build and improve facilities at Trinity
College. He also encouraged sport in boy’s education and in 1967 concluded
the negotiations which saw Trinity College invited into the Public School’s
Association (PSA).
Long after he had completed his time as Headmaster, Br Carrigg continued
to work for the benefit of the College. In 1986 as Deputy Provincial he drafted
the document detailing a new form of governance for the College, which
resulted in the establishment of the first Trinity College Board of Management.
Br Carrigg is currently working in Tanzania, East Africa, assisting young
African Religious Brothers and Sisters with their spoken and written English.

Mr A C Curtis 1994-2003
M
r A C (Tony) Curtis, first lay Headmaster of Trinity
College, was a visionary leader who identified four
key areas or ‘The Four Pillars’ on which the future
planning of the College was centred; Faith Education,
Academic Excellence, Cultural Pursuits and Sporting Activities.
His leadership and foresight successfully guided Trinity into a
new era of education.
As Headmaster of a Christian Brothers’ school for boys in
the Edmund Rice tradition, Mr Curtis upheld the values and
traditions on which Trinity College was founded. He continued
the work of the Christian Brothers, providing practical support
and fostering the cultural diversity of the College community.
As part of this work Mr Curtis formalised the
establishment of bursaries for Aboriginal students
who are committed to completing their education
at Trinity College. These bursaries provide the
educational and career opportunities for Aboriginal
students, which would otherwise be unavailable to
them.
Mr Curtis has had a long association with
Trinity College and was responsible for building
the Maurice Brockwell Observatory - a very
significant initiative. He is remembered as a
respected teacher of History and English whose
students achieved high levels of academic success.
To acknowledge those who helped build the
Trinity College we see today, Mr Curtis recorded
the history of the College in his book, ‘Strive
Manfully’ which was published in 2007. This
book not only tells the story of our past, but
also captures the culture of the College –
the Trinity Spirit.
