THE FINNISH MARINE INDUSTRY Directory Contents Introduction The Finnish Marine Industry Sources Introduction THE FINNISH MARINE INDUSTRY Structure and characteristics The whole Maritime Cluster in Finland impacts on various economic sectors, involves hundreds of companies and public sector organisations with tens of thousands employees. The cores of the cluster include seafaring, marine industry and port operations. Many Finnish maritime cluster companies provide products and services to several maritime segments both internationally and in Finland. The Finnish Marine Industry consists of shipyards, shipyard suppliers, marine engineering and consulting companies, different systems and services suppliers and cargo handling equipment providers. Finnish shipyards produce world’s biggest cruise ships, ferries, technically demanding special vessels and icebreakers. Also advanced offshore platforms, constructions and technical solutions are other fronts of the Finnish marine industry. The production processes are supported by a network of Finnish-based companies including different kinds of engineering firms and systems, services and materials suppliers. Many of them do business also globally. It’s also noteworthy that the largest cargo handling equipment suppliers are Finnish. Marine industry is one of the most internationalized and global business branches in the Finnish economy. Drivers of the marine business networks are mainly global multinational companies, either Finnish or foreign based located in Finland. Especially the shipbuilding industry has strong and wide supplier network in Finland. The Finnish marine industry bounds together also strong network of middle and small size companies that increasingly extend their business internationally. Economic impact and recent developments The influence of the whole Finnish maritime cluster is strong on the Finnish economy. The combined annual turnover exceeds 10 billion euros and the whole cluster employs some 40 000 people in Finland. The respective figures for the marine industry are some 6 billion euros and 20 000 employees. The industry has witnessed a strong general growth trend throughout the first decade of 2000. But just in the turn of 2010 also the Finnish marine industry suffered losses due to the global economic turbulence. Especially investments and newbuilding orders were negatively affected by the related downturn. Since 2010 the stabilizing world economy together with major orders especially in the shipbuilding segment has again strengthened the industry’s performance. The influence was first experienced via recovery of international demand especially benefiting the core international companies. More recently also domestic demand has livened up. 2006 5.2 The combined turnover of marine industry in Finland (billion EUR) 2007 2008 2009 2010 6.1 6.9 6.9 5.8 (+16.4%) (+13.5%) (+0.3%) (-15.9%) The business confidence index of the firms in Finnish marine industry shows strong signs of positive development for the year 2012. The trend is evident in all major indexed fields: general growth, international orders, domestic orders and profitability. Grand players of Finnish marine industry on the global markets The Finnish marine industry involves many global brands, products and companies setting the course of world markets. Finnish marine industry grounds on strong tradition on shipbuilding and production of marine engines, propulsion systems, specialized integrated solutions, port cranes and on-board ship. Besides these companies the Finnish marine industry involves many other global companies that provide products, systems and services for marine-related usage to vast number of clients worldwide. Key markets, products and services Finnish marine industry serves global markets. The most important markets for the Finnish industry are: Shipping Leisure Ports and terminals Offshore energy production and exploitation For the merchant shipping markets the Finnish marine industry companies provide ship design, ship construction, ship repair, ship power and propulsion, on-board cargo solutions, cargo handling equipment and systems, engineering, design, life-cycle maintenance solutions and ship operation technology. As this market is to large extent outside Finland, Finnish companies operating in the field are mainly big or middle-sized. However, a growing number or Finnish SMEs has also entered the international market. For the leisure market the specialization of the Finnish marine industry is cruise and passenger vessel design and shipbuilding. It’s carried out by bringing together project management, engineering, ICT, ship operating systems, materials and components supply, ship power and propulsion, cabin modules, outfitting, repairs and retrofits. The major customers are worldwide operating cruise ship companies as well as regionally operating passenger ferry companies. Traditionally the production and the company networks have been localized in Finland but more and more business expands into global markets as well. For the ports and terminals the Finnish marine industry provides cargo handling and lifting equipment, cargo monitoring solutions, port and terminal automation, maintenance services, ICT, engineering and consulting. Again the market is truly global. For offshore energy production and exploitation the Finnish companies provide oil and gas drilling constructions and structures, engineering and design, building of special ships, arctic technology, components and materials, ship power and propulsion systems, maintenance services, cargo handling technology and project management. This market is also global involving major international companies but also specialized Finnish SMEs. The future market expansion for the Finnish marine industry is expected to be highest on the offshore market. Offshore-related offerings include the arctic technology, ports and terminals, ship on-board cargo solutions, special vessels segments (supply vessels, icebreakers) and horizontally in systems and solutions needed for energy efficiency and environmentally friendly maritime operations. In practice, all of the largest marine industry companies operate globally. From the extended group of 200 major companies within the Finnish marine industry some 80 percent does business internationally. This includes exporting goods from Finland to customers abroad, sourcing from other countries, joint venturing outside Finland and placing of local production or sales units outside Finland. However, some 15 percent of the core companies have personnel outside Finland. Localisation of the Finnish companies’ foreign units go hand in hand with companies’ markets: the majority of the foreign units are in Germany, Russia, Norway, China, Italy and Singapore. World class competences and innovation The Finnish Marine Industry is founded on world class competences and innovation. Finnish industry is customarily marked with cutting-edge competences, such as: - Management of complex products and company networks - Production of technically and operationally very demanding products: cruise ships, complex technical systems, machines - Novel production technologies: modulation, automation, ICT, mass customization - Quality, punctuality and lead-time - Arctic know-how - Customer understanding and life-cycle value Technology is in many ways the core competence of the industry but can hardly live without business know-how, skilled professionals, outstanding education system and breakthrough innovations. The innovation system grounds on collaboration between companies, universities and research institutions, and public innovation agencies. The industry has jointly invested in marine-specific R&D-programs and innovation platforms in all levels between international and local. For the companies the premier calling cards to present the innovativeness have been the complex projects and new products. Examples include world’s biggest cruise ships, azimuth thrusters, waste management systems, fire prevention technology, automatized terminals and novel ICT solutions like ship design software. Recent examples of innovation activity and initiatives involving the Finnish marine industry include: - - - - Finnish Metals and Engineering Competence Cluster Fimecc Ltd with specific R&Dprogramme dedicated to marine industry: Innovations and network R&D-programme 2009-2013. 43 million euros. 24 companies and 11 universities.
