President’s Report
W
e are now well into spring and the club and
surrounds are looking very good. Summer
sports are not far off and it is good to see
all sections preparing in their various sports.
Whilst on the subject of sports it is most pleasing to
report that we have been granted the Australian Squash
Championships which will be held in December this year.
As the host venue we receive 2 wildcard entries to the
tournament so it will be pleasing to see two of our players
among the 64 best entrants. We wish them well. The
event will be streamed live worldwide on the internet and
will also be shown on TV screens throughout the club. The
Bowls section have scheduled their home games on the
weekend of the squash final to be away so as to allow for
the expected influx of spectators. It is very pleasing to see
our sections cooperating for the overall benefit of the club.
gigantic waste of time and
money and will benefit no
one but at great cost. It is just
another government knee
jerk reaction to appease the
anti pokie lobby and will
not, in my opinion, assist
one “problem gambler”. As
usual we clubs at the coal
face will feel the financial
brunt for a lot of wasted
money.
It is with regret that we note the passing of the following
Members over the past few months, Colin Hamel,
Jenny Moffat, Samual Kyle, John Holmes and Glenda
Murrowood who was past Board Director of the Club. All
of these Members were long term members of 15 years
or more and had greatly contributed to the Club in many
ways over those years.
Still on sports our bowls coach Barrie Lester and Josh
Thorburn from Shepparton Bowls Club recently won the
Victorian Indoor Pairs Championship. They then went on
to win the Australian title and as a result will represent
Australia in the UK in early January to play for the World
title. We wish them well in this prestigious event.
All of the above will be sadly missed. We at the Mulgrave
Country Club send our deepest sympathy to all of the
families in the loss of their loved ones at this sad time.
I would also like to welcome Joyce Lindores to our club.
Joyce is an international bowler and has 4 World Gold
Medals in Singles, Pairs and Fours. Joyce is looking
forward to the bowling season at Mulgrave and all our
players are very excited to have her with us. I am sure that
Joyce will have a very enjoyable and lengthy stay with us.
I look forward to seeing all members around the club.
Our latest refurbishment has now been completed. The
bistro and gaming bars have been refaced and the pillars
in the gaming room and bistro have been tiled to match.
The gaming room has had a major facelift and rearrangement of the machines to allow more room for the
sports cafe. As can be seen the cafe has been expanded
with the addition of banquette seating and more tables
and comfortable arm chairs. The bistro servery has had
a rearrangement to increase efficiency and the Heritage
Room has also had a facelift. All in all the results are very
pleasing and keeping the club updated and looking new.
The club continues to trade very well and to the end of
August our bottom line is very close to budget, which was
originally thought to be very challenging. The recently
completed refurbishment was funded completely from our
cash flow and we have still been able to comfortably maintain our loan repayments and gaming machine entitlement
costs. Our next big expense will be the updating of our
gaming machines to handle voluntary pre-commitment. This
must be installed before 1st December 2015 and we must
advise the government our deployment date prior to 1st
December this year. I believe that this whole exercise is a

Barrie Lester
Bowls Report
Unbelievably, the Bowls season for 2014/15 has
commenced, it seems like only yesterday that we
were reviewing last season. Whilst it seems like time
has flown, it has been a great opportunity in the
off-season to recharge some batteries, enjoy sports of
other sorts and for some, even escape to the warmer
places around the country and overseas.
The break has seen the ranks of the bowls section
swell significantly. Again this season, our club has
managed to appeal significantly enough for bowlers
to make the change and join the Mulgrave Country
Club. Great assets for the club itself, not just the
Bowls section. To new players to the sport, as well as
to the club, we say welcome one and all.
Practise matches went well and it was great to renew
friendships and friendly rivalries, most recently with
our neighbours, Vermont South. Practise matches ran
until late September, inter mingled with Intra Club
Matches.
For Midweek Pennant, the first game kicked off on
the 23rd September, for Saturday Pennant was 4th
October and the Night Pennant team has to wait until
mid November to open their account. The coming
season sees our Ladies field a Premier Division team.
A fantastic challenge that will be embraced and
welcomed I’m sure.

There are some exciting events in the pipeline this Summer.
In the next weeks, the Bowls section will be announcing
some innovative programs that will involve Corporate
and Sporting connections and introducing new people to
this great sport of ours. In addition, a youth development
program that is a joint initiative between the Bowls section
and the Mulgrave Country Club, will see some of the best
young talent being fostered and mentored through a structured program that will also strengthen our playing ranks.
When plans have been finalised, more will be revealed.
So, if you haven’t ventured down to the greens for a
while, drag out the bowls bag, polish up your bowls and
start rolling them down.
If you are thinking about having a roll for the first time,
contact the Bowls section and someone will be more than
happy to assist. You’ll be glad you did!
Happy Bowling!

Indoor Bowls Report
Our Indoor Bowls Social days on Tuesday’s have been
quite well attended with a lot of noise and laughter
coming from the Members area. However with some
members away or unable to play we have struggled to
get good results in Pennant. All our teams are in the lower
end of competition.

Tea, coffee and juice now included
Adults $22.95. Under 12 $10.95. Under 5 $5.00
The Club singles are being played at the moment with a lot
of good competition happening between all players and
wish them all good luck for the rest of the championships.
On a sad note the sudden passing of Colin Hamel on the
23rd May was a shock to all.
Colin had been a member of the Bowling & Indoor Bowls
section for 15 years and in that time had enjoyed playing
indoor and out doors for many years.
In 2009 he won the Men’s Indoor Bowls championship,
and also played a large part in the winning of Indoor
Pennant Premierships over the years.
The Country Bistro
He loved the friendships that he, along with his wife
Wendy had made in the Club and at other clubs that they
had visited while playing bowls.
The Spring/Summer 2014/15 Menu
is out with exciting new dishes
Colin will be sadly missed by all his fellow Bowlers and
his many friends around the Club. We at the Mulgrave
Country Club express our deepest sympathy to Wendy
and her family at this sad time and hope to see Wendy
coming and enjoying the friendship at the Club.

Squash & Racquetball Report
The warmer weather is upon us and the
Squash & Racquetball Section is as busy
as ever. Just to recap a few achievements
if your mind has been on footy and not
squash or racquetball for a while...
The Autumn Pennant Season finished
with the highest ranked Mulgrave team to
win a flag - congratulations to the A1 team
of Mithran Selvaratnam, Sharoze Khan,
Muhammad Ali & Elton Cross.
Other pennant winners included the
Masters Grade 1 team captained by
Bob Vezina defeating Moorabbin,
Grade 4 team captained by Tom Slattery
defeating Mountain Districts & Grade
7 team captained by Betsie Young
defeating Mountain Districts. Ladies Cup
Grade won back the ‘Cameron Cup’ in
VSL, B Grade won their final in the SSL
competition and Racquetball Grades 2
& 3 were premiers. Congratulations go
to all players who reached the finals in
their respective pennants – it was a great
season for the club.
Congratulations
to
Mithran
Selvaratnam for winning Division 1
of
the Victorian Open & Graded
Championships 2014 which were
held in July at the Melbourne Sports &
Aquatic Centre. A great achievement for
Mithran who was presented his trophy by
Australian legend Geoff Hunt, the eighttime British Open champion and four-time
World champion.
Whilst on the subject of legends Ted Vale
& Tom Slattery continue to follow the tournament circuit having recently competed
in the 70–75 age group at the World
Masters Squash Championships in
Hong Kong and the Australian Masters
Squash Championships in Bathurst in
September. Another member following
hot on their tails is Peter Adriaans who
also participated in both events in the
55-60 age group. These events attract
elite players & result in many games
being played in a short period of
time, they should issue a medal for just
competing in these age groups
Members will have noticed a new
2014 Club Championship format has
been introduced to give more players
an opportunity to compete. The Squash
and Racquetball Committee believe
more
enjoyment
can be had by all
squash competition
players in the new
format which is held
over a number of
months instead of
the usual weekend
in July. Matches
commenced being
played in August
and finals will be
held on the 9th
November 2014
with a presentation
dinner to follow
that
night.
All
squash & racquetball members &
their families are
invited to attend the
finals on Sunday to
support players &
attend the presentation dinner. Further
details about the
championship,
matches and each
division co-ordinator can be found on
the noticeboard at the courts.
Another date to lock in your calendar
is the 11th – 14th December 2014 as
Mulgrave will be hosting the Australian
Closed Squash Championships. This
event will attract many top level squash
players and will again showcase our first
class squash facilities on the internet. An
event not to be missed...
A reminder to all members that we have
an approved club coach - Denis Jeffery
– who can offer a range of coaching
options for all junior and adult players
who are seeking to improve their game.
Denis is always looking for juniors to join
his Sunday competition, and is currently
offering coaching to beginners. Anyone
interested can contact Denis on 0413
082 327. If Denis cannot meet your
needs, please contact the Squash &
Racquetball Committee.

which means they have not attended a
RAP lecture since 1/1/2011 so you
need to attend either this lecture or the
other one being held at Hawthorn, to be
eligible to play in finals at the end of the
current Spring season. It is now compulsory for all players to be accredited if they
want to play in finals as there will not be
any exceptions.
Any Mulgrave members who need to
update their accreditation, or just wish to
improve their refereeing skills, are welcome
to attend this session. These sessions are
very beneficial and can help players be
more confident when refereeing.
