The Chief Imam urged the graduands to attribute their success to Almighty Allah because it is not by their power, social status, political or economic power that made the programme to be successful but the will of Allah. Quoting from the Quran, Prof. Oladosu reminded the graduands that they did not know anything when they came into the world as infants and now they have their first degrees, which he said, should only be the beginning of a life –long education. The Professor ofArabic Education congratulated the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON) on the occasion of the 30th Convocation of the University and prayed for Allah's continued guidance for him towards recording a successful tenure. New Appointment Name Dr. L.A. Olatunji Department Physiology Appointment Ag. Head Effective Date With effect from 1st August, 2014 NEWS UNIVERSITY of ILORIN P R OB I TA R S - DOCT IN A October 20, 2014 Unilorin Bulletin VC tasks staff on fire safety consciousness By Mubarak Oladosu T he Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), has advised staff members of the University to imbibe the culture of safety consciousness in their life-styles by recognising that the four primary elements of nature constitute threats to personal and social wellbeing just as they are indispensable to the survival of human beings. The Vice-Chancellor gave this advice last Tuesday (October 14, 2014) in his address at the fire safety consciousness workshop organised by the University of Ilorin Fire Service Unit for staff of the University Library. Prof. Ambali, who was represented by the Director of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS), University of Ilorin, Dr. Mahfouz Adedimeji, noted that fire, air , water and earth constitute the primary elements of nature, which exist within a symbiotic balance and a change in the balance beyond human control may result in disastrous phenomena such as blazes and infernos, rainstorms and floods, gales and hurricanes, and earthquakes and landslides . He remarked that everyone needs to adapt to principle of peace studies and preventive diplomacy, by preventing problems through the identification of possible threats and eliminating the threats before they become problems. While making his presentation at the event, Mr. Ibrahim Abdulrazak of the University Fire Service Unit, who conducted the workshop, defined fire as the process of burning through a chemical reaction between two or more substances in the presence of oxygen which produces light and heat. According to him, ”there is a triangle of combustion which are fuel, oxygen and heat that must all be present before there can be fire”. He noted that fire can be eliminated through cooling, smouldering of fire or starving the fire of its fuel supply, adding that the use of water can escalate fire disasters under certain conditions. Mr. Abdulrazak classified fire disasters into five categories and averred that different types of fire extinguishers are suitable for use for the different categories of fire while some fire extinguishers can cater for more categories of fire than one. The categories of fire, according to him, are: Free burning carbonaceous materials such as wood, paper and curtains; Flammable liquids such as paint, kerosene or diesel; Electrical equipment and appliances; Gaseous substances and burning metals. While speaking on safety tips, Mr. AbdulRazak noted that all homes and buildings need to have fire extinguishers which are serviced every six months and people need to be familiar with the interpretation of the colour codes of fire extinguishers and how to use the extinguishers. He added that gas cylinders must always be kept in the backyard while kitchens should be equipped with fire blankets among other tips. The Fire Officer also advised the participants to call the Head of the Unilorin Fire Service on 08034399633 or 08030610388 in case of emergency or call the Kwara State Fire Service on 08025896740 or 08030419316 in case of an emergency outside the campus. In his own remarks, the Head of the University Fire Service Unit, Mr. Ibrahim Dangana, said that it is important for individual families to ensure that their homes have fire and emergency exits to enhance the safety of their lives and property and also practice fireemergency drills . Speaking earlier, the moderator of the event, Mr. W.S.A. Adam, noted that the Security Unit of the University was in charge of fire services on campus until the recent establishment of the University Fire Service Unit, which is manned by professionals in the field of fire disaster prevention and management. The workshop featured demonstration of how to prepare different types of fire extinguishers for usage and the deployment of the extinguishers on raging fire in a controlled environment. Fact: Although observational studies, in which people are tracked over a number of years, do show that people whose weight bounces up and down tend to die at a younger age than those who maintain a steady weight, this type of study isn't designed to prove a cause-and-effect relationship. It's also possible that weight swings could be linked to changes in the person's health. For example, someone with cancer is likely to lose weight while undergoing chemotherapy, or medications for some diseases can cause weight gain. Therefore, this belief remains unproven. The coffee or the cup? T he story goes thus: A group of successful alumni who were talking at a re-union dinner decided to visit their old Professor, then retiring. During the visit, the discussion soon turned into complaints about stress in their work and lives. Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups – porcelain, plastic glass, crystal, plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite – telling them to help themselves to the coffee. When all the alumni had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: “Notice all the nice-looking and expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases, it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all you really wanted was coffee, not the cup; but you consciously went for the best cups…and then you began eying each other's cup. “Now consider this: Life is the coffee; your job, money and position in the society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life. The type of cup one has does not define or change the quality of the life a person lives. Sometimes by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee God has provided us. “God makes the coffee, man chooses the cups. The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything. Live simply for others to simply live. Love generously and you will surely be loved. Care deeply and get the best care you deserve. Speak kindly and God will surely bless you. Please enjoy your coffee!” I cannot help admiring the story and the lessons it engenders since I came across it a few years back. This is because the root of violence, corruption, armed and pen robbery, wickedness, oppression, terrorism and all social evils that assail our country lies in this craze for cups, the best of cups. Few people only appreciate that whatever you are called does not change the quality of your person. Today, everyone, including entertainers and social vermin, is in politics to have access to public money. In a l AST FACTS FILE Did you know? state, at least 60 people want to occupy the position of Governor. People kidnap, kill, torture, blackmail and harass others just because they want to have the cup of President, Governor, Minister, Senator, Commissioner, Chairman, Managing Director or what have you. They even strip revered judges! There are people who hide under political and religious cover or cup but their real identity is that there are criminals. In saner societies, they would be behind bars for the atrocities they have committed. That a person is a Governor or Minister or man of God or anything is just a façade: a criminal is a criminal; a drunkard a drunkard; a womanizer a womanizer; a whore a whore! This life is short and we can choose to enjoy our coffee rather than quarrel over the cups. We cannot all be Presidents or Governors or Vice-Chancellors or Deans but we can all be happy if we choose happiness. If you are admitted to the best University in Nigeria but you assume that only a course holds the key to your success, you are missing the point. You define your course, your course of study does not limit your potential. It is just a cup to contain your personality. The sky is so wide for all birds to fly without collision. You hold the key to your own happiness, if you have the right education, the type of which Jean Jacque Rousseau described as “a nourishment to the soul”. You have yourself to compete with; no one is truly your rival. The secret of life's sweetness is not in money, power, position or fame. The secret of life's sweetness lies in knowing that the purpose of this fleeting life is serving God and humanity. The legendary boxer, Muhammad Ali, put it succinctly when he said in a 1978 Time feature, “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.” Which one would you prefer, the coffee or the cup? The coffee is the content, the cup is the container. The coffee is the real you, your character, your humanity; the cup is your office, your position. It is another Monday and our 30th convocation ceremonies start today. Whatever cup you hold, enjoy your coffee! Whodunnit? Mystery solved! 9 cases with 12 bottles in each case of 100 year old historic whiskey was found in the walls of a mansion during a renovation with the whiskey bottles still full. The cases were stored in the living room but when later checked discovered 52 bottles appraised at over $102,000 were now empty. DNA from the mouth of the bottles pointed directly to the 62 year old caretaker who has denied the accusations. To download a copy of UNILORIN BULLETIN weekly, visit: www.unilorin.edu.ng.
