More than 160 people a year will benefit from having the state-of-the-art facilities and personalised care on their doorstep – saving them and their family and friends a 30-plus mile journey to currently the charity’s only existing inpatient unit at Nettleham Road, Lincoln. “We have appointed a first-class team of nurses to match the unrivalled healing and homely environment that has been created,” said Michelle Webb, general manager (south) for St Barnabas Hospice. “As you would expect for a ground-breaking venture like this, there was a lot of interest from the pool of nursing talent that exists across Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties. “We are delighted to have attracted a nursing team of this calibre. Their skills and expertise give us a strong platform on which to develop an exciting new model for the way end-of-life care is provided - and puts Grantham right at the cutting edge of best practice nationally.” She added: “The new unit is all about us widening local access to hospice services offering all those living in the community with life-limiting illnesses a far wider choice of where and how they want to die.” One of the new recruits, the unit’s sister Cathie Alcock said: “Everyone in the team is impressed by the facilities that have been created. “It is an amazing opportunity for all of us to be involved at the very start of this new era for end-of-life care and to be able to contribute to its future success.” Research has also shown that a welcoming environment generates benefits to visitors and to those staff and volunteers who work within it. While boasting the very latest in purpose-designed facilities, the unit will also bring patient care closer to nature like never before with the six en-suite rooms opening up into their own private grounds outside and sharing a sun room and picturesque courtyard. The expansion is over and above the services already provided at the Grantham day hospice and by the St Barnabas’ “hospice at home” initiative. The inpatient unit at Lincoln will also continue to maintain its full complement of beds. The plans have come to reality thanks to a unique partnership between St Barnabas and the local NHS, particularly South West Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. The story of the tree goes back a long way. For generations it had been looked after by locals who propped it up and built a fence around it. Despite their efforts, in 1820 the tree blew down in a storm. Fragments of the wood were made into snuff boxes, trinkets and furniture that can now be found in various collections. Fortunately, the tree remained rooted and re-grew strongly from the base into the tree we have today. It's a place of pilgrimage for mathematicians and scientists from all over the world - and one of the Tree Council's 50 Great British Trees. © Colin Russell The Flower of Kent is an old variety of English apple, best described as a tasteless cooker, but can be eaten and stores reasonably well. It is a large odd shaped apple, green and yellow, striped with red. In the orchard at Woolsthorpe, there are several younger Flower of Kent trees taken from the original so that when the tree eventually comes to the end of its life, there will be ‘descendants’, allowing us to continue the story. ‘It’s important for people to remember great scientists such as Isaac, as his work touches all of our daily lives’, says Woolsthorpe Manor’s Conservation Manager, Margaret Winn. ‘People don’t realise the importance of his discoveries. Without them, we wouldn’t have space travel or mass communication. Even mobile phones wouldn’t exist as there would be no satellites. His discoveries regarding light led the way for television and medical x-rays, and even washing machines with spinning drums are based on his laws of motion.’ ‘He was just a solitary lad from Lincolnshire, and I often wonder what he would think today about what his discoveries have led to.’ Woolsthorpe Manor will be hosting its annual ‘Apple Day’ on 12 October from 11am until 4pm. A splendid tree-lined approach and beautiful parkland add to the anticipated experience of this superb 19th century venue, with two impressive restaurants. The Wordsworth Restaurant is magnificent having stained glass windows and an ornate ceiling. The beauty spa offers a full range of treatments and the lovely bedrooms all equipped with today’s living requirements, make for lasting impressions. Kilworth House also has its very own award-winning theatre. Seating 540 in tiered rows, the theatre hosts many shows throughout every year. Viennese Strauss Galas, the Magic of Motown, Last Night of the Proms and musicals such as Oklahoma, The Pirates of Penzance, Guys & Dolls, Sister Act and many others delight thousands of people. The epic multi award-winning South Pacific musical tells the story of American sailors stationed in the South Pacific with Navy nurses, during World War II. Love stories evolve and as the war against Japan escalates, this tale of romances throughout difficult times pulls at the heartstrings. The songs from South Pacific are renowned. Some Enchanted Evening, Happy Talk, Younger Than Springtime and I’m In Love With A Wonderful Guy, plus many others, are known by millions. Several of the productions, at Kilworth House Theatre, have interesting stories associated with them. For example, the original musical of South Pacific which opened on Broadway in 1949 was a major success from the outset, winning numerous Tony Awards and again even more Tony Awards when revived during 2008, including Best Musical Revival. With original music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, Kilworth House Theatre is honoured and privileged to have the expertise of Directors such as Mitch Sebastian and Musical Direction by Garth Hall for many of their shows. Having two AA Rosettes and four stars, Kilworth House is certainly a venue to be enjoyed throughout the year, with numerous events including Weddings, Conferences, Murder Mysteries, Tea Dances and Jazz Evenings, being very popular amongst many others.
