OCTOBER 18 & 19, 2014 TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMES MASS INTENTIONS A MESSAGE FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Friends in Christ, I want to begin by thanking all of those who assisted in our annual Mass of the Anointing of the Sick on Saturday morning. I’m actually writing this before it happens, but I am sure I can safely say that those who attended were spiritually enriched by the day and socially rejuvenated by the lovely luncheon afterward. We are half way through the month of October and we continue to have a good number of people at our Tuesday evening recitation of the holy rosary. Check out the announcement in this bulletin and look to join us on Tuesday at 6:30 pm. It’s only a half hour, but it is a very good way to come together as a parish family to honor the Mother of God and to pray for our own intentions. Sometimes I get feedback from what I write in this column. Judging from the large amount of comments I received on my column on families and funerals, it was well received by many people. Always remember to make your choices known clearly to those who will survive you. Write things down, and don’t leave them to chance. Some people told me that if they had known about the man whose children refused to give him a funeral Mass, they would have joined me in the empty Church when I returned from his funeral service. Your remarks make me want to explore other topics which you might find interesting. Stay tuned! I want to thank you for your response to our annual appeal which we call the “Block Collection.” We have almost reached the half way mark to our goal. This important collection helps us with our buildings and grounds. Every penny of the collection is spent on our physical plant here at the parish. Because of the capable hands of Mike Sweeney and his men, we almost never call in an outside contractor. That makes your contribution go even farther. If you have misplaced your block collection envelope, additional ones are available at the doors of the Church. Thank you again for your much needed support. I want to close by talking about two funerals we have had in the past year. They are the funerals of Father Conn’s parents, Jeanne and Harold Conn. Jeanne died this past winter. Hal just passed away in the past two weeks. I want to highlight these two good people because, in many ways, they could be held up as “patron saints” in our parish. I say this because today’s families, which are usually much smaller than in past years, are slow to encourage a child in thinking about religious vocations. In their desire to be grandparents, parents are actually taking to discouraging their children from thinking about being priests or sisters. Look at the Conns. They had only one child, James. His desire was to follow his call to the priesthood. They supported and encouraged this vocation. May their example encourage our families to talk about and to encourage your young ones to think about and to follow whatever call God gives them – especially if their call is to serve the Lord in the Church as a priest or a sister. Religious life is a very satisfying life which helps so many get closer to God. Do your part to encourage those you love in following the Lord in this way. May Jeanne and Hal rest in peace. I am sure the Lord thanked them for giving the Church so good a priest as their son. Until next week, I leave you In the peace of Christ, - PAGE 2 - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2014 5:00 pm Vigil — Margaret Sawicki SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19, 2014 7:30 am — Linda Innamorato 9:00 am — Martin & Alice Kensey 10:30 am — Daniel & Jeannie Logue 12:00 pm — John Schmidt MONDAY, OCTOBER 20 2014 6:30 am — Dan Donahue (52nd Anniversary) 8:30 am — Francis H.
