The highest prevalences are found in the eldest people. Although we cannot cure vertebral fractures, we can lower the risk for subsequent fractures with treatment, if we are able to diagnose the disease. Still vertebral fractures are often missed in clinical practice. Among geriatric patients, who can be distinguished from other patients due to their vulnerability and multimorbidity, the prevalence of vertebral fractures is expected to be high, but was not yet investigated. This thesis describes the prevalence and risk factors of vertebral fractures among a cohort of geriatric patients, and shows the consequences of vertebral fractures in these vulnerable patients. Is mortality raised in geriatric patients with vertebral fractures? Do these patients have an affected postural control and are they at risk for future falls? Lastly we show that bisphosphonates, worldwide the most investigated and used treatment for osteoporosis, are worth prescribing to prevent subsequent fractures in these frail patients.
