SAINT PAUL OF THE CROSS, Priest (1694-1775)
After receiving a vision, and while still a layman, Paul founded
the Congregation of Discalced Clerks of the Most Holy Cross and
Passion (the Passionists) in 1721 to preach about Jesus Crucified.
Paul was a preacher of such power that hardened soldiers and
bandits were seen to weep.

SAINT JOHN PAUL II, Pope (1920-2005)
A member of the prepatory commission, Karol Wojtyla attended
all four sessions of Vatican II, and is said to have written Gaudium
et spes, the document on the Church in the Modern World. In
1960 he published Love and Responsibility. Pope Paul VI, delighted with its apologetical defense of the traditional Catholic
teaching of marriage, relied extensively on Archbishop Wojytla’s
counsel in writing Humanae Vitae. In 1978, Archbishop Wojtyla
became the first non-Italian pope since Adrian VI.
John Paul II is the most traveled pope in history, having visited
nearly every country in the world which would receive him. As
the Vicar of Christ he has consecrated each place that he has visited to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

SAINT JOHN OF CAPISTRANO,
Priest (1386-1456)
John was governor of Perugia under King
Landislas of Naples. When war broke out between Perugia and Malatesta in 1416, John
tried to broker a peace, but instead his opponents ignored the truce, and John became a
prisoner of war. During his imprisonment he
changed vocations and became a Franciscan.
He was reported to heal by making the Sign
of the Cross over a sick person. After the fall
of Constantinople, he preached a Crusade against the Muslim
Turks, which he led at age 70 at the head of 70,000 Christian soldiers. He won the great battle of Belgrade in the summer of 1456,
then died in the field a few months later.

SAINT ANTHONY MARY CLARET, Bishop (1807-1870)
He founded the Congregation of Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (the Claretians). Anthony became the Archbishop of Santiago de Cuba on 20 May 1850. He also founded the
Teaching Sisters of Mary Immaculate. He had the gifts of prophecy and miracles.

GUATEMALAN MISSION SALES
On 26 October 2014 Kay Sweeney will be at Nativity once again to
sell Guatemalan handicrafts. These crafts are made by indigenous
women in Guatelmala, who are part of the Kateri Tekakwitha
Mission Fund. The sales of these handicrafts help support and
educate these women. There will be information available on
how to support a scholarship for a young indigenous woman.
Check their website for more information at www.missionguatemala.org. Kay Sweeney is an Associate of the Sisters of
the Presentation in San Francisco. She works in Guatemala with
the Kateri Tekekwith Mission Fund helping these women develop
their talents through formal and informal education. The crafts
will be available in the O’Hare Center after the Sunday morning
Masses only.

SPECIAL COLLECTION THIS SUNDAY
This weekend is World Mission Sunday. There will be a second
collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith. Your
prayers and generous support directly benefit the mission Church
in places like Mongolia where the young church is growing, filled
with zeal for the faith, but lacking in resources for its outreach
to families and those in need; your prayers and assistance help
to build new schools and churches, train catechists, run medical
centers, and provide for skill training classes and homes for
children with disabilities who are homeless. Please be generous.

2015: THE YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE
Pope Francis had declared 2015 The Year of Consecrated Life.
On Monday evening, 20 October 2014 there will be a special
Evening of Prayer at 07:00 PM at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 1111
Gough Street, San Francisco. This prayer service, presided over
by Archbishop Cordileone, will open the events of The Year of
Consecrated Life. Please join us for this special occasion.

SYNOD OF BISHOPS ON THE FAMILY

Bishops and lay experts attending the Synod on the Family are
coming to the end of their first week’s work and moving into their
different language discussion groups for the second phase of their
meeting. With Pope Francis present at almost every session, a
vast variety of family issues have been under the spotlight over
the past five days. Supporting children of separated families,
reaching out to the widowed and lonely, and accompanying
couples searching for reconciliation and healing in their lives;
those are some of the practical questions being discussed in the
Synod Hall by participants who’ve come from all corners of the
globe to share their perspectives on the problems facing family
life today.
A hot button issue that emerged from the questionnaires ahead
of this Synod was family planning and the very high numbers
of Catholics who ignore the Church’s ban on artificial methods
of contraception. Alice and Jeffrey Heinzen (advisors on natural
family planning to the U.S. bishops’ conference) urged couples
to look again at the advantages of natural methods of fertility
regulation, which they say can now prove up to 99% effective, if
they are properly understood and practised.
After a summing-up session on Monday morning, participants
now move into 10 smaller groups where they must try and reach
some agreement to be presented at the end of this two-week
meeting. But as Canadian Fr. Tom Rosica underlined, this meeting
may be less about results and more about the radical new listening
method that Pope Francis has introduced.

Young Believers
With the ever-increasing use of email and texting, the abbreviation “OMG” has come into widespread
and common use (even appearing in advertisements for the California lottery at one time!). While
many people may regard this as “simply an expression”, it is in fact a blasphemy: you are
taking the Lord’s name in vain, in violation of the Second Commandment. Are you willing to
be a strong Catholic and obey the Commandments that our Creator gave us? Don’t use this
“phrase”, and encourage others to follow your good example (it’s a small sacrifice: offer it up
for the souls in Purgatory!).
The Church also offers us a partial indulgence if we say “Blessed be God” whenever we hear
God’s name taken in vain. So the next time someone texts you “OMG”, text them back “BBG”.
And when they ask you what it means, explain this whole situation to them!

NATIVITY YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS
XLT Mid-Peninsula Encounter
Nativity Youth Ministry, along with St. Raymond, St. Denis, and
Sacred Heart youth ministries are excited to present the first-ever
XLT-Mid-Peninsula with 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh,
on Wednesday, 22 October 2014, to be held at Sacred Heart
School. During XLT (“exalt”), teens from different Catholic
parishes come together to pray and worship. The night is divided
into three parts: praise and worship, a dynamic speaker, and
adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Young people, 6th
grade and above, are invited to this special evening. To order your

Teen Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers Wanted
About once a month, preferably during the 05:00 PM Saturday
Masses. Any young person who has been confirmed can
participate in these leadership roles. Those who feel comfortable
speaking in front of people can serve as a Lector. The role of
the Eucharistic Minister is particularly ideal for those who have
outgrown altar serving and who understand the reverence due to
Our Lord in the Eucharist.

YOUTH RALLY AND MASS
The Archdiocese of San Francisco is sponsoring a Youth Rally and
Mass on All Saints Day, Saturday, 01 November 2014, 10:00
AM-04:00 PM at St Anne of the Sunset Church, 850 Judah Street,
San Francisco. This will be an exciting, one-day experience of
community building, learning, prayer, and activities for Catholic
teenagers (grades 7 to 12) and their adult chaperones. There will
be a special focus on the lives of young saints. Strengthen your
