Issue 80 ‐ October 2014 Hi and welcome to the 80th edition of the Pauanui Post. I was in Gold Coast with family and friends for 11 days earlier this month and came back to what seemed like very cold weather ‐ the shorts and singlets went back in the drawers for a while! We did see a few stunning days in Pauanui recently but the cold is once again with us! But, with the arrival of daylight savings I’m sure summer can’t be too far away! Welcome to all the holiday makers and I hope that we can provide you with some perfect holiday fun! A big congratulations to the team at Experience Pauanui for making the new ‘Pauanui Beach’ signage possible (see right). This has been a long time coming and I’m sure it will benefit the community by increasing visitors (who wouldn't want to visit that amazing beach?!). Big thanks also go to the Menz Shed, Andre from the Pauanui ITM and Storms Contracting for their help in erecting the signs. Looking good! Trading Hours Take care over the holidays and look out for one another! NZMCA Free Wheelers’ Rally, Pauanui Club 29 August to 01 September The Special Interest group of the NZ Motor Caravan Association, The Freewheelers, recently held a four day rally at the premises of the Pauanui Sport & Recreation Club. In spite of the inclement weather over the duration of the rally 52 motor homes and caravans attended. A happy time was had by all as old friendships were renewed and new ones formed. Various activities were undertaken over the four days although these were restricted due to the gale force winds and heavy rain experienced. The Freewheelers is made up of those members who are single or have lost their wives, husbands or partners and wish to still pursue the movanning lifestyle. The gender mix is roughly 50/50. Have you heard of Re Sale Therapy? It’s a new second hand shop that has opened in Shop 19 at the Pauanui Shopping Centre. Around the back along from the Hairdressers and the Beauty Therapist is an eclectic mix of new and used goods from lace hankies, aprons and wool to dining suites, art and even a saddle. Carole Williams and Tracey Salkeld are opening the shop every Friday, Saturday and Monday, 10am – 2pm, at the moment and will increase these hours as summer approaches. It is all about re‐use and re‐cycle. If it’s too good for the dump and you don’t want to use Trade Me or have a garage sale, pop in and see them. They will gladly take your donated goods or they will sell on behalf for a commission. The items need to be in a good, clean condition and in working order. So have a clear out and turn you old treasures in to cash. KIDZ ART Junior Art & Craft Classes Hi everyone, Check out the current holiday programme on page 9 for art & craft activities to help entertain the kids! The local Pauanui & Tairua kids have been creating up a storm in the weekly afternoon classes. Keep your eye out for children wearing examples of our final activity before the holidays – tie dyed and screen printed t‐shirts or hoodies. Next term we are planning a Wearable Arts project with a final show. I will keep you posted with details as it gets closer. If anybody has any items they would be prepared to donate for this it would be very much appreciated. Cotton sheet’s would be great for backdrops, mosquito netting, corks, bottle tops, buttons, all sorts of materials can be transformed into weird and wonderful wearable creations. I have also started a facebook page. This page will be great for letting you all know of any changes or extra classes ‐ particularly with summer just around the corner. www.facebook.com/JuniorArtandCraftClasses 3 Hikuai Students Stand Tall Pauanui Electrical It was a bleak and miserable day for the Thames Valley Primary Schools Inter Cluster Cross Country, but that didn’t stop the children putting in some fast times out on the field. Held at the Whitianga Waterways, students from approximately 40 schools around the district gathered to race against their peers in wet and muddy conditions. Hikuai School sent a team of 15 students following their school cross country the previous week. Pupils aged 8‐12years who came first and second went on to represent the school, with over half of them pacing in the top 20. Congratulations to the following Hikuai School students who represented their school with pride: All Electrical Jobs Big or Small Heat Pump Installation Free Quotes Building new or big alteration? We have had a VERY busy month here at preschool even with the weather being as changeable as it has been, the children have still enjoyed many hours outside. We would like to thank Mick Welch for spraying our grass area for onehunga weeds, this is very much appreciated by every member of preschool! Paula, Melinda and Monique will be away at the Child Space Conference in Rotorua, we are hoping to come back to preschool after the school holidays with some wonderful new ideas to share with the children. The Conference is partly paid for by the Ministry of Education Equity grant. The weather looked promising for our annual golf tournament Sunday morning, however a quick look at the forecast was enough to send quite a jitter into our organising team. So congratulations to the 15 teams who came out and braved the patchy weather. Many teams took the opportunity to dress up ‐ fantastic effort was put into many of the costumes, Little Bo Peep and her sheep, Super Mario Brothers, Fairy Average golfers, Alice in Wonderland, the 4 Musketeers and Zorro to name a few. This year a handicap system was introduced for the ambrose tournament. This worked well and ensured that everyone had a chance to achieve a good score. This event is the Pre School largest fundraising event for the year and we would like to thank every one of our sponsors, supporters, players and volunteers that made the day so successful! A special mention to the Pauanui Sports and Recreation club; without you this event would not be possible. This year we made an outstanding $7500.00 and have had some wonderful feedback about the day, prize giving and silent actions that were run adjacent to the event. Waikato Regional Council Resource Officer Brendon Hewett has inspected the Trail developments and has had meetings with Trail organiser Gary Fowler. A large section of the now formed track at the Duck Creek end of the trail has now been covered with road metal the same red colour as Pauanui streets. “We are extremely pleased with the way this looks,” Mr. Fowler said. Several small creeks crossing the Trail are being bridged and should be complete by the end of the month. Mr. Fowler said two large donations have been received, $8000 from Walking Access New Zealand (see page 6) and $1000 from the owners of the Gas service station in Pauanui. The mystery remains surrounding the old car found alongside a yet to be completed part of the Trail. “We intend to leave the wreck where it is,” Mr. Fowler said. “Maybe when the track is being used, someone will come up with an answer to the mystery.” MCNABB Kitchens, Cabinets & Furniture A local business enjoying an excellent reputation for fine craftsmanship. E Mail: [email protected] Help Trust to Finish Trail Want to donate to help build part of the Pauanui to Tairua Trail? Well, you can, it’s easy to do and you don’t have to fork out heaps of money. The Trail committee has come up with an idea where anyone can sponsor a piece of the trail, including timber used in the bridges and boardwalks making up parts of the Trail. Making a contribution will get your name on a plaque when the Trail is finished. “We want the community to be totally involved with the project,” said Trail Chairman, Gary Fowler. “This way people can feel they are part of an important community asset by making a donation.” Mr. Fowler said there were different types of donations. A donation of $100.00 would produce a metre of track. A wooden family seat at a trail rest point would require a donation of $1000.00. The seat would have the donor’s name on it. Single boards used on Trail could be bought with a donation of $20.00, he said. Mr. Fowler stressed that all donations would be permanently acknowledged on plaques on the Trail. Donations can be sent to Hikuai District Trust, c/o 408 Hikuai Settlement Road, RD1, Hikuai 3547. Cheques should be made out to the Hikuai District Trust. Donations can be left at the Pauanui Community Office or the Pauanui Information Centre. Keep up to date with Trail progress on the Trail website. Council recently deliberated on submissions to its draft Freedom Camping Bylaw, and will look to adopt a revised draft bylaw at its meeting on 22 October. In the past few months we've had a draft Freedom Bylaw out for public consultation. We had over 120 submissions and submitters were given the opportunity to speak to Council at a hearing last month. During recent deliberations Council did decide on some changes to the proposed draft bylaw that included: Removing the proposed restriction that would prohibit freedom camping in restricted areas during summer and holiday weekends. Extending the proposed departure time from 8am to 9am. Extending the number of nights freedom campers can stay in a restricted area to 2 consecutive nights. Having designating areas for freedom camping within all restricted areas. Some changes to proposed areas where freedom camping is prohibited or restricted Council agreed to keep the proposed district‐wide restriction that all freedom campers must be certified self‐contained. Earlier this year we had a judicial review of our current Freedom Camping Bylaw sought by the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA). The High Court decision was released late last month and found that our Bylaw is legal, but two clauses in our Public Places Bylaw and Parking Control Bylaw should be revoked. Council formally revoked these today. "During the legal proceedings we were already a long‐way down the track in reviewing the Bylaw to make it more permissive, and revoking the two inconsistent bylaw clauses" says Thames‐Coromandel Chief Executive David Hammond. "We are wanting to work more proactively with the NZMCA to ensure that people visiting the Coromandel in certified self‐contained vehicles are catered for and are considerate of our beautiful Coromandel environment. People in uncertified non self‐contained vehicles will be encouraged to use commercial campsites." We will be working on signage and developing easy to use information for the public, including freedom campers, on the freedom camping rules and also places where freedom camping is encouraged. When this is ready we'll have information available in our areas offices, i‐sites and visitor centres, and update our website. Walking and cycling trail receives funding boost What is going on at the Club? Coromandel’s Hikaui District Trust has been awarded an $8,000 grant from the New Zealand Walking Access Commission to assist development of a walking and cycling trail between Pauanui and Tairua. The funding has been allocated from the Commission’s Enhanced Access Fund, which supports projects designed to enhance access to New Zealand's outdoors. Exciting times for the PSRC. The grant will help the Trust to formalise legal access for the trail route, which will eventually extend 25km from the southern end of the Coastal Walkway track through to Tairua township. New Zealand Walking Access Commission Chief Executive Mark Neeson said the trail would enhance access to highly desirable section of the Coromandel Peninsula. “This is a project that will provide immense value for the local community and one that clearly demonstrates individuals, community groups and private organisations working together to enhance outdoor access. The project is receiving good community support and generous assistance from private landholders who have agreed to allow access across their land.” The Trust is one of two organisations nationally to be awarded funding from the Enhanced Access Fund in the first funding round of 2014‐2015. The long overdue renovations are well underway! Members had the layout explained to them in the last Presidents Pen newsletter and were excited by the changes. The place will continue to look like bombs dropped for the next few months especially around the front walkway. Our contractors are mostly locals and are doing fantastic job. Plenty of great feedback on the current progress and if we continue we will have a heap of progress by Labour weekend. Despite all the madness we are still open so come along and join in on the buzzing social scene. Basically we are open as usual. Thursday and Friday nights are getting a nice buzz as Pauanui begins to fill back up for the Spring and Summer months. The Members Draw is starting to hit the $750 mark making a visit well worth while. To see renovation updates and pics go on the club web www.pauanuiclub.co.nz or face book page Pauanui Club. Each member of the party was assigned a ministerial position, including the role of Prime Minister. After lobbying the school electorate, pupils wrote a manifesto explaining what their party stood for and what changes they would bring about to the school if they were elected. Then they hit the school campaign trail, courting prospective voters with cookies and lollies! To the Pauanui community and the members of Pauanui Sports and Recreation Club, We would like it to be known that we are not leaving the catering contract voluntarily and in fact our contract runs until June 2015. ‘Students First’ proved popular with their “we look out for you” slogan, promising class pets and more computers. The ‘Collaborative Party’ encouraged children to “vote smart”, pledging a tuck shop and a gymnasium. But on the day it was the ‘Pohutukawa Party’ who blossomed like no other, winning voters over with their promise of a pay rise for teachers, and paying students to attend school. We are left in a state of surprise that after Chris has been a loyal employee of the Pauanui Sports and Recreation Club as Bar Manager and then their caterer for a period of ten years, that we will be left without an income, after keeping our business afloat over the quiet winter (something I'm sure other Pauanui business owners would empathize with). We rely on the summer trade of January to catch up again. In addition to voting for their preferred political party, the children also elected a Prime Minister. All 3 candidates were hugely popular, with Oliver Leen nudging ahead of Eve Gibson and Rebecca Clarke to make it a clean sweep for the ‘Pohutukawa Party’. Instead, we have been asked to cut our contract short, by 7 months so someone else can have the advantage of the newly installed kitchen. After struggling with broken and rusty equipment, limited freezer space and other such issues in the old kitchen for so long, we find this rather distressing. Congratulations to all the senior students for a well run campaign. We feel the board of the Pauanui Sports and Recreation Club were not acting ethically or honestly, when they made this decision, the general public have not been kept informed of the truth and it is not in keeping with the community/family spirit that we share in Pauanui. PBG (Pauanui Beach Grill) Chris, Elrond and family would like to thank you all for your support and custom over the last five years. We have enjoyed catering for you, cooking your meals and sharing your special occasions, weddings, birthdays and parties As we are now left without a livelihood ‐ if anyone can offer Chris some work / a job or any ideas to help us in any way, please let us know. In the meantime please join us to enjoy your favourite PBG meals, before they're gone. We will be in the kitchen until after Labour weekend. Thanks, once again, for the support over the years, we really appreciate it. The victorious Pohutukawa Party Ever considered becoming a volunteer?
