The monthly newsletter of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church —Tacoma, Washington Volume 26, Number 10 OCTOBER 2014 Saint Nicholas Messenger Our 53rd Festival October 3, 4, 5 2013 St. Nicholas Dancers The Treasure of Orthodoxy There are many people who are disconnected from the Church, those who are unchurched and the young people, who have been lured away by the sirens of this world. We need to pay attention to those around us and provide for them the opportunity to know Orthodoxy. It is our duty to the Lord to be "Ambassadors of the Faith" to the surrounding community; not to try to proselytize people, but to witness the Orthodox Faith through our manner of life; to show them the way to the ancient form of worship and point out to them the Biblical Truths of Inside Messenger the Christian Faith, which have been forsaken by many (even by October Calendar 4 many who want to call themselves Christians) in contemporary society. We should stand up as champions of the values we have News & Announcements 5 inherited through the centuries, both from our Orthodox Christian Faith as well as our Hellenic heritage. We have been blessed with legacy of Christianity and Hellenism, which we need to share News from our Ministries 6 this with everyone around us. Hellenism was shaped by the Christian message and Christianity utilized the intellectual tools of the HelInformational flyers 14 lenic civilization to proclaim the Gospel. It was in the Greek language that the Gospels and Epistles were first written. The Greek language is still taught in every theological school around the world where people are trying to read the New Testament in its original language. It is our duty as Orthodox Christians to make it possible for people to study the Scriptures in their original form, continued page 13 Page Saint Nicholas Messenger OCTOBER 2014 S t N i cho las G re ek O r t h o d ox Ch u rch 1523 S Yakima Ave Tacoma, WA 98405 Phone: 253-272-0466 Fax: 253-572-3245 Parish Website: stnicholastacoma.org E-Mail: [email protected] Sunday Services 8:45 am Orthros 10:00 am Divine Liturgy Please join us for Social/Coffee Hour in our downstairs hall, following the Divine Liturgy Fr. As we reach our busiest time of year and make the final preparations for the 2014 Festival, we know how important this work is to the financial health of our Church. Income from the Festival is sufficient to cover one-fourth of our other operating expenses. As we have been covering an increasing share of our operating expenses from stewardship, however, that money is available for use toward building and roof repairs. Let's use our 53rd Greek Festival to make sure St. Nicholas is safe and sound for another 53 years! Jesse Brandow is a seminary graduate who studied at St. Vladimir’s Seminary and Holy Cross. He is originally from Michigan, and has traveled to Guatemala on short-term mission trips in 2009 and 2012. Now he is preparing to serve in Guatemala for two years as a longterm missionary through OCMC. Come to Liturgy on November 16th to hear more about missions and Guatemala, and to learn how you can participate in the growth of Orthodoxy throughout the world. Fr. Seraphim— New St. Nicholas Parish Directory It’s been a couple of years since the last directory was published and is in dire need of an update. Along with information about parishioners, the directory is your source of fasting days, and other important information. As in the past, we’ll be taking family and personal portraits for inclusion in the directory. Portraits will be taken in the lower hall November 2, 9, & 16. This portrait service is offered free of charge to St. Nicholas parishioners. Directories will be sold for a nominal charge. Bill Samaras— Page 5 Ministry News New - Military Service Ministry In an effort to recognize the military service of our parishioners and support them spiritually, Father Seraphim is requesting information to build a roster of the members of our community who are currently serving or have served in the Military. If you would also like to submit any photos of members of our community who have served, please do so. We plan to: have a prayer & coffee hour for deploying servicemembers, and again upon their return offer spiritual support to active duty personnel, as well as their families sponsor a Veteran's Day weekend coffee hour with prayers, etc. perform blessings and memorial services at military cemeteries when appropriate strengthen our ministry presence at JBLM for Orthodox service personnel In addition to spiritual support, the information and photos may be used to recognize those who have served on Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, etc. Nickolas Calbos (CPT, US Army) will be collecting this information on September 28 in the Parish Hall. Alternatively this information can be sent via email to [email protected] or via phone at (717)4405679. Seraphim— Page 6 Saint Nicholas Messenger OCTOBER 2014 Ministry News Building Committee In last month’s Messenger a brief explanation and a Bar Chart Schedule was presented to suggest a long range Capital Improvements Plan for the Saint Nicholas Church over the course of the next seven years or so. Though work has not yet been approved beyond masonry repairs & restoration and re-roofing at the Sanctuary by a General Assembly and the Parish Council, the long term plan was intended to show that yes, there is a feasible step-by-step means in place to ultimately construct an elevator while taking care of other pressing issues beforehand. However, to use an abbreviated analogy of the 40 years of Israelite sojourning in the times of Moses, it’s going to take a while to get there. An important component that was left out in the last month’s Messenger due to space limitations was a spreadsheet of about how much each of these major step-by-step improvements might cost. That spreadsheet is now listed below. The ultimate goal is to promote a united ‘Road to Berlin’ type of plan in a coherent way that is easy to explain and comprehend. Please feel free to call at (360) 895-1756 or email at [email protected] for questions, ideas, and inspirations of how to better move forward. In current news, built-up curb edge repairs at the east kitchen area roof is nearly complete and should be done by the time this Messenger issue is distributed. In the interest of playing it safe and not wanting to interfere with ongoing Greek Festival preparations, the re-roofing of the Sanctuary has been held off until October 13th. That work should take one to two weeks to complete, weather permitting. Total Cost Target Date A SUGGESTED PATH TO IMPLEMENT REPAIR, RENOVATION & ADDITION WORK AT SAINT NICHOLAS CHURCH: Sanctuary Masonry Repairs & Restoration. Re-roof upper Sanctuary roof. Done Paid For Work completed in May 2014. Work to be completed in Fall of 2014. Replace Sanctuary Windows; restore exterior window jambs. $150,000 Tentatively done in summer 2015. Needs approval first. Re-Roof and Insulate Dining/Kitchen/Lower Hall Roof. $150,000 To be done in summer 2016 if windows done in 2015. Funding raising campaign for Upper Hall & Entry Replacement. Design and Permitting of Upper Hall & Entrance Replacement. Upper Hall & Entry Replacement, and Other Remodel Work. Additional fund raising campaign for additions. Design and Permitting of Elevator & North Wing Additions. Elevator and North Wing Additions. $50,000 Ideally targeted after the Greek festival in 2016. $150,000 After funding target is meant, to about March 2018. $1,350,000 Between end of Pasha and start of Greek Festival, 2018. $50,000 Either after the Greek festival in 2018, or in early 2019. $100,000 After funding target is meant, to about March 2020. $1,000,000 Between end of Pasha and start of Greek Festival, 2020. $3,000,000 The above is a list of major repairs, renovations and additions that have been identified over the course of two years of study and inquiries at Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. All costs and dates beyond Items #1 & #2 should be considered rough at best, as there are a plethora of variables, in terms of logistics, time and scope, that can and will likely change as things move forward and become better defined. Very little in the above list is etched in stone, but is instead meant to provide a pragmatic, big-picture road map of how to start with immediate pressing repairs, then work through major renovations, and ultimately construct an elevator and north wing addition. The above costs are intended to be all-inclusive, covering not just a contractor's bid, but sales tax, permits, design fees, and anticipated inflation as well. Bill Acker—Building Committee chair Page 7 Saint Nicholas Messenger OCTOBER 2014 Ministry News Bible Study We are mid-way through our study of the Gospel of Luke. Using the teachings of St Cyril of Alexandria, St Ambrose of Milan, and Blessed Theophylact, we carefully examined one of the most difficult passages in Scripture: "Make friends for yourselves with the unrighteous mammon, so that when you fail, they may welcome you in the heavenly tabernacles" (Luke 16:9) (if you want to know what it means, ask one of our Bible Study members!) We also studied the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, from which the saints derive some of their teaching on what happens to the soul after we die. We studied an analysis of the patristic teaching on the soul after death by Metropolitan Heirotheos Vlachos, which is available to those requesting it. Fr. Seraphim— 2015 Stewardship Ministry “From God every family in heaven and on earth will be named.” Ephesians 3:15 Each person coming to the gathering of the Church brought with them everything they could spare for the needs of the church. This meant for the sustenance of the clergy, widows, and orphans, for helping the poor, and for the good works of the Church. We encourage you to keep responding with your hearts to this ministry. We are all called to be stewards of this great gift of giving, whether it is with of our time, talents, and or treasures. We are further along towards our goal of ‘stewardship supporting the operating budget' than we were the year before. 2015 Stewardship Pledge Cards will be available in November 1 for your consideration and we humbly ask your Pledge card to be returned by mid December 2014. Thank-you for your prayerful commitment. In Christ's love, Co-workers in Christ Becky Themelis— Still reading Messenger in 1950’s black and white? The Fall 40 Days for Life campaign is beginning soon! 40 Days For Life focuses on two efforts, spring and fall of each year, in which participants stand in peaceful, law abiding vigil in front of abortion clinics around the nation. We hold non-explicit signs, read psalms and scripture, and assist women coming to the clinics to find alternatives to abortion. We help them all the way-- counseling them on the devastating experiences many post-abortive women have, exposing the many lies and omissions the multi-billion dollar abortion industry perpetuates, helping them with childrearing or adoption alternatives, as well as assisting them in other ways (social, financial) to whatever degree possible. This is on the ground, involved, caring, incarnational work directly with the people who need Christ's love the most. The real thing! Sign up now! Fr Seraphim usually does Thursdays at 11am. See Fr Seraphim for more details. Altar Servers Our vision: to be men of prayer, serving Him with humility This month: we discussed the history and purpose of the Psalm verses used during the 1st and 2nd antiphons of the divine liturgy. For example, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross has the following verse: "O my God, attend to me, why have You forsaken me?" which is taken from Psalm 21, which is explicitly prophetic of Christ's crucifixion we continue to emphasize preparedness (arrival time, proper dress, etc) we are now having the boys stand through the whole liturgy, in accordance with our vision. -Fr Seraphim— Page 9 Saint Nicholas Messenger OCTOBER 2014 Ministry News Daughters of Penelope Contact Vice -President Diane Pirotis or Secretary Helen McClure for information on this meeting. This has made a measurable difference in our parish life, and on behalf of the Parish Council, I want to thank you from my heart. In the Book of Acts, the key characteristics of the Church are described-- evangelism, celebration of the Eucharist, care for widows and orphans, and the hospitality to strangers. Paul says to "welcome one another" and "greet one another with a holy kiss" and this is exactly what you are all doing. Please know that your efforts are seen by God, and will earn a glorious reward in His eternal kingdom! George Pirotes— Page 12 Saint Nicholas Messenger OCTOBER 2014 Ministry News The Treasure of Orthodoxy (continued from page 1) so that they may see the original message and not be deceived by false interpretations. This is a call to action! We have a pearl in our possession, which can enrich many, but we have to be willing witnesses of this Truth: The Orthodox Faith is the True Faith, which we have inherited through the centuries from the time of the Apostles. The Orthodox Church is not just another denomination, but the Mother Church for all Christians. Here lies the repository of the Tradition of the Apostles and the Bible as lived and experienced by countless generations in the last twenty centuries. Here lies the interpretation of the teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ as inspired by the Holy Spirit and proclaimed by the many holy men and women of the last two thousand years. All of this is evident in the writings of the Fathers, in the music and hymnology of our worship services, in the piety of our people, in the architecture of our buildings, in the holy art which decorates them. We should offer these treasures to those thirsty souls that seek them. We should not force our views on others, but witness to the Truths of the Faith, proclaiming with our mouths, but also our lives that Jesus Christ is our God and Savior, the Son of God who took humanity upon Himself in order to perfect it; who died for our sins and through His resurrection healed our humanity.
