P.S. 173Q
Mathematics
In Topic 3, students will use several skills
that include mental math, estimating
products, and multiplying one-, two-, and
three-digit numbers. Your child will be
introduced to the multiplication
properties: Commutative, Associative,
Identity, and Zero.
In Topic 4, students will learn how to
divide with one-digit divisors. Learning
this skill will require their understanding
in the areas of estimating quotients,
remainders, connecting models and
symbols, dividing with one-digit divisors,
and using zeroes in quotients. You can
expect to see work that provides
checking their answer with multiplication.
During the study of these topics, your
child should continue to practice basic
multiplication facts.
Writing Workshop
This October, 5th graders are continuing
to work very hard at writing creative
Personal Narratives. We are learning to
write small moments that allow readers
to experience these moments with us.
We are challenging ourselves by drafting
and publishing narratives with strong
story structure. We will also use writing
techniques to elaborate meaningful
parts. We are very eager to take on new
adventures as writers at P.S. 173.

Social Studies
Students will be continuing to explore how
our government works. This month Mrs.
Lovell will guide students in examining
how a bill becomes a law by studying the
Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the
Constitutional guarantee of a trial by jury
(Unites States v. Al Capone). Each class will
examine text, primary documents and
photographs to expand their knowledge of
civics. They will be given the opportunity
to act and think as historians.
Reading Workshop
Unit 2 is entitled "Learning Through
Reading." It consists of two parts: high
interest nonfiction followed by reading to
learn in a content area. This unit offers
students time to read high interest
nonfiction and then time to research to
build knowledge around a topic, in this
case, The Revolutionary War. In the first
two weeks, students will have gotten at
least a broad understanding of some of
the basic information related to The
Revolutionary War. In the second half of
the unit, they will build on that general
knowledge and begin to study particular
aspects (related subtopics) of it in more
depth.
