Help Make Billy’s Dream Come True!
We are pleased to announce that one of Bridgeport’s very own, Billy LePretre,
has been chosen to play on the Game Day USA tournament team. This team was
chosen by Game Day, hosting an All-Star
Weekend where athletes from the surrounding states were evaluated. Over 1,900 athletes participated with only twelve players
making the team. Billy LePretre was one of
the players that were selected!
The tournament will be held in Orlando,
Florida at the ESPN Sports Center in Disney
World, on Dec. 27-31. This is a dream come
true for Billy. He is a very dedicated player
and loves the game of baseball. He is so dedicated to the sport, that in the winter months
he is training for the upcoming season. He never complains and always gives his all.
He gives every little bit of his time to the sport.
Although this is the opportunity of a lifetime, it is quite costly. We would love to
make Billy’s dream come true on our own, but financially, we need some help. We
are hoping that with the help of our community, YOU can help make his dream a reality.
A 1920’s Murder at the Speakeasy mystery show is going to be held at De La Salle
High School Boy’s Campus on November 1st from 6-10:30pm. Admission is $35.
NO tickets sold at the door. To order your tickets please email lepretre6@sbcglo
bal.net, marked Speakeasy in the subject line, or contact us by phone 773-557-3861.
If you are unable to attend but would like to help, please contact us. Any donation is
very much appreciated. Thank You in advance for helping us make Billy’s dream come true!

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 15th, 2014
The children at St. Barbara School celebrated the Feast of St. Francis on October
3rd. October 4th is the actual feast. The younger children brought their favorite
stuffed animal or a picture of their pet to school.
SAT., OCT. 18th
10AM-5PM

*If it Rains - Held at the
Valentine Club Gym
34th & Emerald
The children in preschool through second grade gathered in the gym. The teachers told the story of St. Francis and how much he loved animals. The children then
discussed the importance of taking care of our pets and all animals. They prayed for
all of God’s creation. They ended with a “Pet Parade” around the gym.
The older students looked at ways in which we can take care of our earth and environment and how recycling and other proactive measures play an important part in
sustaining the world for future generations.

Words: “Come unto Me,
all you who labor (struggle) and are heavy laden
and I will give you rest.”
(MT. 11 :28)
So, our neighbors and

Palmisano Park
Advisory Council (PAC)
Honored with Award
The Palmisano Park Advisory Council (PAC) has been
selected by Friends of The Parks for the 2014 Volunteer
in The Parks Award for Outstanding Park Advisory Council.
The Palmisano Park Advisory Council headed by President, Maureen Sullivan was cited for “creating unique
events such as the Bridgeport Air and Water Show, hosting clean up days and helping to restart the McGuane
PAC”.
In a message to Sullivan, Friends of The Parks Director Maria Stone said, “The work the PAC does truly
shows the passion you have for this unique park. It is a
pleasure to honor you with this award. Thank you for all
that you do for Chicago’s parks and public open spaces!”
The PAC has been led by President, Maureen Sullivan
for three years. Under her leadership and organization, the
park has played host to the neighborhood’s most popular
family events including music, nature, science and public
health efforts.
“I’m grateful for the recognition of our team,” said Sullivan. “We filled a leadership void to bring our beautiful
park and the community closer and I’m very proud of our
creative and hands-on approach.”
Since 1975, Friends of The Parks have advocated for
the parks and monitors the condition and safety of the
Chicago Park District & Forest Preserves of Cook County.

As part of the Fire Prevention Week, Pre-K through Grade 2 students were visited by retired firefighters, Dan Sheehan and Norm Volpe. The students learned
about the need for a family emergency escape plan, the importance of always
checking your smoke detector, and if there is a fire that you should stop, drop, and
roll. An educational activity book on fire safety was given to each student, complements of Chicago Fire Fighters Union, Local 2. We are grateful to all Chicago

Please Donate to Washington Federal’s
Food Drive to Benefit Our Community
Please join Washington Federal Bank’s effort to make a difference in our community.
Now through October 26th, Washington Federal will be hosting a food drive to support
Benton House’s community food pantry.
Benton House is home to our neighborhood’s only food pantry. Currently, 15% of residents in Bridgeport are food insecure, meaning that they don’t have regular access to safe
and nutritious food. The Benton House Food Pantry works to meet this need by distributing thousands of pounds of food to over hundreds of families every week.
Washington Federal Bank is pleased to be a part of the fight against hunger in our community. You can assist the bank in this drive by donating cans of non perishable food.
Some of the recommended items are: canned fruit and vegetables, cereal, chili, jelly,
macaroni and cheese, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, rice, soup, stew and tuna.
Kindly drop off your donations through October 26 at either one of our locations. We
are located in the Bridgeport area at 2869 S. Archer Avenue or in the Taylor Street area at
1410 W. Taylor St. Thank you for helping to make a difference in our community!

On October 2, Saint Jerome School students honored their grandparents by inviting them to spend the
morning at school. Grandparents enjoyed Mass, breakfast, classroom visits and a book fair with their grandchildren. Most of all, the morning was an opportunity
to showcase the mutual love and pride between the
generations.

First Grade Talks About Feelings!
The First Grade class at McClellan Elementary
School is working on “their skills for learning” in the
Second Step Program.
The School Counselor, Mrs. Herbert, read to the students a book called ‘Feelings’ for an exciting read
aloud and then she had them roll a ‘Feelings Dice’ to
allow them to discuss feelings/emotions that they have
had. The students truly enjoyed this activity and are
working very hard on their social skills as well as their
academic skills.
