The Lion’s Tale
The monthly newsletter of Stainland Lions Running Club
October 2014
From The Chair
Stainland Trail was a mahoosive success in only its second year with a
fantastic atmosphere and great feedback – all thanks to the
marvellous ‘Team Lions’. At the finish line water station, the
runners were beaming and had lots of praise for the course (?!) and
our marshals. This really couldn’t happen without every single one
of you, so thank you so much. And if you enjoy organising things and
have some time to spare, please let us know if you would like to be
involved in the Boxing Day Fun Run or Bluebell in 2015 – you would
get lots of support and a HUGE sense of achievement!
London Marathon packs have been arriving and many members know
if they’ve been accepted – Mike Dunning, David Rushworth, Tony
Mott & Catherine Bednall to name but a few – or rejected – Paula
Statham, Emma Forrester-Thompson. So congratulations to those
who are in this most marvellous race. For those not lucky this time,
you could. 1) Enter a different marathon. 2) Enter the club draw. 3)
Do both. The entry criteria for the club draw is on the forum and the
draw will take place at the November catch up meeting so make sure
you hang onto the rejection letter and pass it to me, Dave H (mens
captain) or Sally C (ladies captain).
The next Vets race is at Spenborough on 9th November and is the last in the season. This can only mean one
thing .... there will be a presentation night in the offing! And yes, it’s on Saturday 6 th December at Elland
Road in Leeds. For those who have participated in at least one race, the event is subsidised at £15 (or non participants £25). Details are again on the forum so post your name if you’re coming ... if there is a good
turn out it may be worth putting on some transport.
Steve Boyer (XC captain) has posted the dates for the 5 cross country races on the forum too – and they
start on 7th December in Dewsbury. It’s free to enter and you just turn up and run! These really are
marvellous little races and are so much better than cross country used to be at school!
Things are hotting up in the Championship following the Yorkshireman and the second track race. There
were some great performances for Tony Mott (I know I’m biased) and our very own Tanya Seager who broke
the ladies course record!!!! The next race is the Woodland Challenge on 19 th October.
And I’m putting myself in ‘Nutters Corner’ this month along with Sandy Gee and my usual partner in crime
Mrs Bedders. All three of us did the Yorkshireman marathon on Sunday 14 th Sept and just 6 days later
completed High Peak 40 (yes 4-0 miles). Long distance off road races are so much fun – involving singing,
dancing, cake eating and lots of giggles ... with hysteria setting in at mile 37 arriving at the ‘Ravine of
Doom’ ...yes really – there was a combined exclamation of ‘you have to be f$&&£$g joking’ before sliding
down the vertical descent on our bottoms!*
So there goes another month – doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun! Stay safe everyone – hi viz clothing
and head torches should be dusted off as we roll into October – and run like there was a zombie chasing
you!
Love T xxx
*I should probably clarify that this is my view as Sandy has a much calmer and modest approach to these
things! Happy running, T xxx

-------------------------------Friday 19th September;
Thirty nine Stainland Lions were among the 350 competitors starting out in perfect conditions from
Haworth for the Yorkshireman off road full and half marathons and once again it was Tanya Seager
making the headlines for their club.
The 26 miler with its 3000' of climb had over 200 entrants running in singles or pairs over
Pennistone Hill, Ovenden Moor and Cullingworth including six Lions whilst the "Half", which is
actually 15 miles and 2000', attracted a capacity 250 runners.
In the 15 miler Calder Valley's Ben Mounsey led from start to finish to win the race for a record 7th
time in 1hr 36mins and 55secs, just 13 seconds shy of his course record. Matt Higham led
Stainland's charge with a superb run to take 5th place overall in 1:47:57 with Jon Collins 6th in
1:48:46. But it was Stainland's Tanya Seager who stole the show, continuing her amazing year and
gaining the respect of the hardened fell running regulars with a brilliant performance to finish 7th
overall and set a new ladies record of 1:51:28. Calder Valley's Gayle Sugden was 2nd lady in 1:56:31
and Stainland's Mags Beever had another impressive run to take the third place in 2:02:43.

year for him by taking 11th place in a quality field in 3:44:47. Meanwhile Colin Hughes 4:59:37,
Aileen Baldwin 4:59:42 and Sandy Gee 5:00:02 enjoyed a good run together, as did Tracy Mott and

-------------------------------Eight Stainland Lions had a successful day at the Spen Greenway 10k resulting in a first placed ladies
team and several individual prizes. Dave Hutchings had a strong run to cross the line first for the
Lions in 38mins and 46secs with Rachel Cullen following to finish as 4th lady and 1st F35 in a PB of

Friday 26th September;
Stainland Lions played hosts an extremely successful second running of their Stainland 10K Trail
race, despite being advertised as a tough and hilly course the race saw a 50% increase in the
number of entries proving that runners enjoy the challenge as well as the scenery and finished with
two new course records being set. It is a measure of the present strength of the club that the Lions
could have 75 people involved in marshalling and organising the race yet still field a team of 32
runners, and they had much to celebrate with both the organisation of the race and the
performance of their team.
Once again Stainland's Ben Mounsey and Gav Mulholland were the first two to cross the line, both
knocking over a minute and a half off their times for last year with Mounsey winning in a new record
of 39mins and 10 secs, and Mulholland also beating the old record by finishing in 39:46. It was the
same story in the ladies' race with Stainland's Tanya Seager and Lindsey Oldfield doing likewise,
Seager shattering last year's record by almost 6 minutes to win in 46:14 and Oldfield also finishing
one minute inside it at 51:12.
Stainland's Johnny Helliwell made it a 1-2-3 for the men as he followed his team mates across the
line in 41:51 with Jon Collins 45:00, Richard Hand 45:51, Mark Pigford 46:18, Ed Hyland 46:49,
Damien Pearson 49:22, John Bassinder 52:28, Andrew Cross 53:33, Kevin Jaggar 55:04, Aileen
Baldwin 1st F60 56:14, Mark Preston 58:18, John Ingles 59:02, John Hirst 59:07, Gaby Ferris 59:30,
Rochelle Drake 59:31, Mike Dunning 60:05, Matthew Gadd 60:30, Emma Forrester-Thompson 62:36,

87:32 and Sandra Robertshaw 97:35.

Stainland Trail Race
By Tony Mott
Better every year!!!
The second ever Stainland Trail race took place on Sunday 21 st September. With a
record number of entries (over 200), a lovely sunny day and the fantastic support of
the whole club, it was another tremendous success.
Feedback from runners was unanimously positive, with lots of very flattering
comments about the race organisation and the famous Stainland Lions marshals!
The police turned out in force to help us out, courtesy of George who doubles as a
PCSO when not in his real uniform (his Stainland Lions vest). Results were published
within hours of the race thanks to an awesome finish team – Iain T, Joanne, Mags,
Sally, Virginia – the technical spreadsheet wizardry of Mark Pottinger and the speed
of Steve ‘Webmaster’ Boyer. Thanks to all of you for being brilliant!
The registration team dealt with a record number of entries on the day. Thanks
Tracy, Karen M, Amanda, Coach, Lucy, Jon C & Dr Catherine for staying sane amongst
a deluge of eager runners. Ian Q, Paul P, Tim & Jenny did an equally incredible job
getting everyone parked up around the narrow streets of Stainland village and
thanks Jackie for getting us access to Bowling Green School car park.
John Bassinder was a faultless Race
Adjudicator as always, Colin sweettalked the locals into letting us ran
across their land and Martin W did a
fabulous sweeping job and has the
nettle stings to prove it. Karen T
battled leaky water butts and a
collapsing table to keep the water
station fully operational with the help
of St John Ambulance (who love our
races by the way). And nobody left
without their goody bag with young
Ruby in charge!
Steve Boyer was professionalism
personified (believe it or not) making
all the pre-race safety warnings and
post-race winners announcements. I’m
not sure the residents of Stainland
6
appreciated
the
“Wake
up
Stainland” over the PA system at 7
o’clock on a Sunday morning, but
at least there was no pre-race
duet from Alan and Steve this
time J
Ben & Tanya smashed the male
and female course records set last
year and a number of Lions picked
up other prizes: Gav and Lindsey
took 2nd place male and female
respectively, Jonny was 3rd male,
Aileen was the first F60, Judith
first F65 and James romped home
with the M70 prize. Well done
all!
My biggest thanks go to Scratchy
and his army of marshals who
gave the race the real Stainland
Lions effect. There is no happier,
more supportive and downright
loud group of people than a team
of Stainland Lions marshals.
There were loads of great
comments on facebook, twitter
and e-mail. I was sent the
following from a very happy M45 winner, “Many thanks. What a great race, route
and organised event. Really enjoyed the race today. Please thank the marshals
again. They were brilliant. My girlfriend passes on the same thanks as me too.
Thanks again, Craig.”
Being such a generous bunch, you bought all of the left over t-shirts raising roughly
£200 for Kirkwood Hospice. Club runs have been a sea of orange ever since.
So thanks to everyone for another fantastic event and apologies to anyone and
everyone I missed or haven’t named in person. Your hard work beforehand, during
and after the race made it another great day for Stainland Lions Running Club.
THANK YOU!
Tony
(a thoroughly knackered but very happy Stainland Trail Race Director) J
