Come
to Kouvola
Just 1½ hours from the Helsinki Metropolitan Region is a place
that will make you realise that fascinating does not always have
to mean faraway. Kouvola is a pleasant town of about 88,000
inhabitants situated in Southeast Finland. Kouvola is Finland’s
tenth largest town.
The nearest airports are Helsinki-Vantaa and Lappeenranta. The
availability of a fast rail link between Kouvola and St.Petersburg
and a night train to Moscow makes Kouvola a convenient gateway to the eastern parts of the European Union. Kouvola is the
western-most point of the Trans-Siberian Railway that connects
Europe to Asia, and is a significant railway junction in Finland. It is
located less than 300 km or 2 h 20 min away from St Petersburg,
with four trains departing for St Petersburg daily.
Listen to the shrieks of merriment at Tykkimäki Amusement Park
and Aquapark, see the rhododendron blooms at Arboretum
Mustila, experience the rugged wilderness landscape in Repovesi National Park and visit Verla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site - all this you can do in and around Kouvola.
In Kouvola, nature and the countryside live hand-in-hand with
the city centre. There are plenty of cultural goings-on, from a
symphony orchestra to idyllic rural art and culture destinations.
And of course there’s sport – the RX FINLAND World Championship Rallycross event offers the thrill of speed. The best trotting
racehorses compete at the international KYMI GP races. Hiking,
canoeing, skiing or playing – here you can do whatever takes
your fancy.
Sit out on a terrace on Manski Pedestrian Street and watch the
world go by. Live and relax in Kouvola.
Enjoy our hospitality!

HAVING FUN
AT TYKKIMÄKI
Aquapark – new this summer at Tykkimäki
Fun-packed splashing and wild water games are now amongst the
attractions at Tykkimäki. In addition to the rides, the new Aquapark will be fun for people of all ages from June 7. In store are wild
rides down water slides on mats, tyres or nothing. The largest slides
are Typhoon Tunnel, on which you descend on a tyre, the skating
tyre waterslide Pendulum, Thunder Tunnel which you descend in a
sitting position, the open waterslide Body Slide, and four-lane mat
waterslide Multilane.
In between the hilarious descents, you can have fun in Waterplay, a play
pool for children, on its smaller water slides and in the ‘Kelluvat kivet’
(floating rocks) adventure area. For the very youngest children, there is
the shallow Spray Park paddling pool, where fun is guaranteed with a
range of water cannons and fountains.
At Aquapark, you can also do some real swimming as there is a fulllength pool for more serious swimmers. The facility is equipped with
saunas and changing rooms.
A comfortable new restaurant area with terraces
Aquapark’s new restaurant area with its large terraces is there to refresh
not only the park’s revellers but also people swimming at Käyrälampi
beach. The restaurant will be open from 8 am until 11 pm whenever
Aquapark is open and has a view over the neighbouring beach.
Amusement park - relaxed fun
Tykkimäki Amusement Park offers laid-back fun for the whole family.
It’s an easy and safe place to have fun, where you'll find plenty to do
for children of all ages and in all weathers. A diverse range of rides, the
Atreenalin adventure park, cute little animals, the Upsy Daisy Kids’
Pavilion and now also the refreshing Aquapark all go to make an unforgettable day at the amusement park. Natural surroundings, a wide
choice of services and places to eat and the adjacent Tykkimäki Camping with its accommodation services keep visitors in a great mood.

ARBORETUM MUSTILA
– an impressive forest park
Arboretum Mustila is Finland’s oldest and largest Arboretum that
showcases different species of trees and plants. Since 1902, the Arboretum founded by A.F. Tigerstedt has been test-cultivating durable specimens of both Finnish and foreign tree species in large research stands and unique forest gardens. Mustila is especially known
for its exotic conifer stands and hundreds of rhododendrons and
azaleas that bloom in June. Most of the plants have nameplates and
some text giving an introduction to the species. Arboretum also sells
seeds and saplings for trees and shrubs that can withstand the cold.
Guided tours

also has a café in

The park has three signposted trekking trails of different lengths
(1½ - 3 km) that are easy to follow, as well as a nature trail with
question points (1 km). It also has dozens of little paths that you can
freely explore. In the central areas of Azalea Slope, Rhododendron
Valley and Fox Hill are wide, well-maintained paths that can also be
negotiated by wheelchair.
Mustila is situated in Elimäki, about 25 km from the centre of Kouvola towards Helsinki on Route 6. Arboretum Mustila is open every
day all year round.

WORLD HERITAGE SITE VERLA
– a unique experience
The Verla Groundwood and Board Mill have been at the heart
of the village of Verla since the 1870s, first as operational mill and
then, since 1972, as a mill museum. In 1996, Verla was accepted
onto UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites as an exceptionally
well-preserved entity. The landscape dominated by rapids, the historic mill buildings with their machinery, the mill owner’s house
and gardens and the idyllic workers’ cottages give an authentic image of early life in the Nordic forest industry.
The atmosphere of Verla’s Mill Museum is unique in its vividness:
the machinery and tools are in their original places in their genuine
environment. It is as if the mill has just been stopped for moment.
Although there are of course no actual mill workers, in many ways
you can still feel their presence in the museum.
A new dam has been built on Verlankoski, which borders the mill
building, in order to protect the mill from the water. In summer 2014,
an interesting new culture trail will be opened to visitors in the area
between the dam and the mill. Along this trail, you will be able to
see the mill from a new perspective.
The rocks above the Verlankoski Rapids also have a prehistoric
rock painting dating back about 6,000 years. All this is situated about 30 km from the centre of Kouvola.
The museum is open from the beginning of May until the end
of September. You can only tour the museum accompanied by
a guide. Tours in foreign languages are given by appointment.
6
KOUVOLA & IITTI 2014 | visitkouvola.fi
In the museum area you will also find a café, small shops where you
can buy handicraft items, organic wine and homemade bread etc.
You can also overnight at Verla. In the summer season, Verla has
about 70 beds available. All the cottages are located within walking
distance of the Mill Museum.

IITTI
– a nice place to spend
a holiday and enjoy life
Just a little more than 1½ hours from congested urban Finland lies
idyllic municipality Iitti and its church village, full of countless little lakes and rocky shorelines. In 1990, the Finnish Broadcasting
Company (YLE) and the Finnish Tourist Board (MEK) chose Iitti
Church Village as Finland’s most beautiful village.
There is so much to experience in Iitti in summer: The international Iitti Music Festival, the changing art exhibitions at Iitti Library and the Village Hall, and fishing and nature trekking. The Iitti
Music Festival culminates in carrying a piano to the top of Hiidenvuori Hill and performing a midnight concert. The ruggedly beautiful scenery in the northern part of the municipality with its rocky
shorelines and lakes, and the flat meadows of the southern part are
made for hiking, skiing, boating and fishing.
More than 130 years of market traditions continue briskly in Kausala
Market Square. The joys of winter include ice fishing, Christmas
markets, sporting events, skiing and driving horse-drawn carriages.
Iitti Church
The cruciform church built in 1693 is architecturally precious and
one of Finland’s 15 wooden churches preserved from the 17th century. The external wall of the church were first painted red in the
early 19th century and, since then, the colour now known as ‘Iitti
Red’ has been a characteristic feature of the church.

MUSEUMS &
EXHIBITIONS
Are you interested in days gone by? You can return there by
visiting the many industrial and technical museums as well as
museums of local history. A hunger for art, on the other hand, can
be satisfied in both traditional and modern art exhibitions, which
are displayed at many expressive locations.
Kouvola Radio Museum
Each room in the Radio Museum showcases radios from a certain
decade – from the 1920s to the 1960s – and at the same time tells
about the homes and lives of the residents of Kouvola during the
decades in question.
Kouvola Museum Quarter
At the Kouvola Museum Quarter, you can see what life was like
in Kouvola Station Village in the early decades of the 20th century.
Operating in the district’s buildings are Pottery Shop Pikku Kippo,
Pikkupuoti Aino, Giftshop and Café Onnenkukko, Restoration
Shop, Eco-Shop and the Tube Radio Museum. In the Nygren
House, exhibitions are organised in summer. New to the Museum
Quarter is the Domestic Animal Yard, which will be open from 1.7.
– 4.10. The Old Handicraft Market will take place on 14.9. and the
traditional Christmas event Atmospheric Christmas on 30.11.
The military section of the museum displays radio equipment used
by different groups during the Winter War and War of Continuation, as well as post-war radio equipment. The technical section has
plenty of radios manufactured in different countries and in different
periods. The oldest are crystal radios from the 1920s and the newest
are fine VHF radios from the 1960s equipped with record-players
and tape recorders.

Hearing the call
of the barracks
Kouvola was and still is renowned for its army barracks.
The local area also has many historical fortresses and fortifications.
Life near the border of two great powers, Sweden and Russia, and
later that of the young independent Finland have coloured the history of Kouvola in many ways. In 1910, the decision was made to
build garrisons at Kouvola, Koria, Lahti, Riihimäki and Tammisaari,
an area that at that time was part of Russia’s Great Principality of
Finland. The purpose was to improve the defences of the Russia’s
north-western part, and to secure the important railway connection
passing through Southern Finland. The brick buildings that represent the neo-Gothic style became the property of the Finnish government when Finland was granted independence in 1917. Learn
about the military history of these places or recruit a brigade for a
guided tour.
Kasarminmäki in Kouvola
Kouvola’s garrison area was built between 1911 and 1914 as a military
base of the Russian Empire. The area is home to about 30 red-brick
buildings, the Officers’ Club and the Orthodox Church of the Holy
Cross. The famous Finnish architect, Alvar Aalto, did his military
service at Kasarminmäki, and designed the main gate to the grounds.

These days, this traditional site houses the Kymenlaakso University
of Applied Sciences, the Military County Staff of Eastern Finland
and a large number of businesses.
At the same time, the Koria garrison was also built, and the area is
now known as Pioneer Park.
Parts of the Suvorov chain of fortresses
The Liikkala and Utti fortresses are part of a chain of fortresses commissioned by General Suvorov in the 1790s to protect St Petersburg.
Liikkala Fortress or Fortifications (1791-92) comprised a large and
small fortification linked by a connecting road. The fortifications are
still visible in the landscape behind Liikkala Fire Station, and there
is a tourist map guide between them.
Construction work for Utti Fortress also began in 1791, and continued until 1799 when work was suspended. The fortress was never
completed, but the ramparts are clearly visible at Utti along Route 6.

Kouvola’s Manski Pedestrian Street is like a living room shared by everyone.
Along it are shopping centres, special boutiques, cafés and restaurants. The
pedestrian street begins 100 meters from the bus and railway stations and runs
all through the downtown area.
If your soul craves an even bigger selection, try large supermarkets situated
just 4 km away from downtown Kouvola. Foods, electronics, home appliances,
furniture and various accessories are available in the district of car dealers and
specialised stores. The district is also home to the Prisma Hypermarket and
Southeast Finland’s largest shopping centre, Veturi.
Marketplaces of local producers offer local food spiced with special flavours,
and there are also many small handicraft workshops in such places as Kuusankosken Taideruukki, Verla and the Kouvola Museum Quarter. Have you
ever tasted Kouvola licorice, renowned as a delicacy by all Finns? As a gift
from Kouvola, it’s an exotic sure-fire hit!
Tax-free stores will increase your passion to shop. More than 100 shops in
Kouvola offer tax-free shopping services. According to Finnish law, people
living outside the European Economic Area (EEA) should not be charged
VAT on things they buy in Finland. The Finnish standard VAT rate in 2014 is
24%. Look for stores displaying these signes

LIVE ORCHESTRA
THE SECRETS
In 2014, Korvenkylä Summer Theatre presents the première of Marianne Tikkanen’s musical play Kaksi kitaraa
- (Two guitars) the Topi Sorsakoski story
The show tells the story of Topi Sorsakoski’s unique voyage from his
dad’s tango orchestra to national popularity. Sorsakoski made it big
time as the leading figure of the band ”Agents”. This summer we bring
you a historically correct, however outrageously entertaining musical
play depicting Sorsakoski’s steps to the king of rock. Music plays the
biggest part as the wonderful ”The Secrets” performs the best of
Sorsakoski’s songs.

Flowing water, rugged trees and cliffs, beautiful flowers and scenery
- all these await you in and around Kouvola. You can walk, boat, fish, hike
and get some really fresh air in genuine natural surroundings, and you can
enjoy services connected to the spirit of nature.
Heisanharju
Väliväylä canoeing route
Heisanharju is an oasis-like area in the middle
of small lakes and pine forests; a coniferous
environment with stimulating activities for
those who enjoy peaceful nature. Easy hiking trails on open ridge country are familyfriendly. Within Heisanharju you can also
fish, swim or try geocaching. Heisanharju is
situated in Jaala, 22 km to the north of downtown Kouvola, in the direction of Mäntyharju.
Väliväylä, an old log-floating route, is nowadays used for canoeing from Lappeenranta
to Kouvola. It is a chain of narrow lakes and
small rivers with lots of early history from the
Finnish forestry industry. Between Kouvola
and Kannuskoski there are several small rapids to liven up the canoeing experience on
this family-friendly route. Along the way at
appropriate intervals are renovated rest sites.
The route contains a variety of fishing spots.
Kymijoki River
The Kymijoki River flows through the Kouvola region on its widely varying journey to
Kotka. Along the way there are roaring rapids, vivid countryside and wilderness, with
excellent fishing spots. The section between
Vuolenkoski and Kimola is especially suitable for long-distance canoeing, and from
Susikoski southwards the river is excellent
for rafting. Hiking trails along the river can
be found north of Anjala.
Mouhu trail
Hiidenvuori
The trail through the woods starting from
Mouhu village goes in the direction of Repovesi National Park and is part of a longer
hiking trail from Mäntyharju to Repovesi.
This trail’s highpoints in Kouvola are the
exceptionally rugged rocky vistas, especially around Pitkälampi Lake. The trail is an
excellent additional destination for people
travelling in the Repovesi area.
Hiidenvuori Hill rising over Kirkkojärvi
Lake is one of the most beautiful sites in
Iitti. The hill is a popular lookout spot and
destination for nature-lovers, as well as being the stage for the annual Iitti Music Festival. The ancient castle monument is easier
to conquer today because of the newly upgraded hiking trail. The south face of the hill
has campfire spot and a beach.

REPOVESI NATIONAL PARK
– trekking in a rugged rocky landscape
Repovesi National Park is located in South-East Finland and in
the area of the municipalities of Kouvola and Mäntyharju. The distance from the centre of Kouvola to the entrance at Lapinsalmi is 45
km and, from Helsinki, about 130 km. In an area of about 15 km²,
Repovesi offers more than 40 km of trails, some easier, some more
difficult and some almost vertical. Begin your trek from one of these
entrance areas (with car parks): Lapinsalmi and Tervajärvi in the
southern part of the area, and Saarijärvi in the northern part.
Thanks to the varied and rugged landscape, Repovesi National Park
is one of Finland’s favourite hiking destinations. Hiking routes cross
a natural environment punctuated by high cliffs, bodies of water and
woodland and pine swamps, some of which have been preserved
untouched. At Repovesi, you can find rock paintings 6,000 years old.
Stone-age man already enjoyed the sacred cliffs of Repovesi.
Olhavanvuori
The cliffs of Olhavanvuori Hill in Valkeala rise to a height of 50
metres. Rock-climbers reckon that it’s the best place of its kind in
Finland. You can, however, also walk to the top, from which you can
admire a wonderful wilderness landscape.
Mustalampi Lookout Tower
Climb to the top of Mustalamminvuori, but don’t stop there. From
the top of the lookout tower at the summit, you will see some amazing views.
Kuutti’s Channel
The 270-metre long Kuutinkanava (Kuutti’s channel), built for logfloating in 1912, reflects Finland’s industrial history. Along it are
places to rest and build a campfire.
Coming by bus
Elving’s Tower
Save Repovesi’s unique natural environment and head out there on
public transport. You can get to the national park and back by bus.
The summer bus timetables are available from, for example the Kouvola Tourist Office or at the website kouvola.fi/joukkoliikenne.
From the top of the 20-metre high Elving’s Tower, located along
the road to Orilampi, you can see far over the largest lakeland and
wilderness area in Southeast Finland, even all the way to Repovesi
National Park. Open 18.5–29.9. Sat–Sun 11 am–6 pm (closed on
20.6.2014).
Check these out at Repovesi
Kettu Trail (Ketunlenkki)
A popular and varied 5-km circular walk, which is very suitable for
families with children. Along the way, you will find both the Lapinsalmi Suspension Bridge and the manually-operated Kettu Ferry.
Kettu Ferry (Ketunlossi)
Muscle memory is the best memory, so cross the unforgettable
140-metre Määkijänsalmi on this ferry built in 2010 powered only
by oat porridge and human muscle. The ferry can carry up to eight
people at a time. You can easily get there from the Lapinsalmi car
park.
Lapinsalmi Suspension Bridge
This 50-metre, five-tonne suspension bridge crosses Lapinsalmi at a
height of 10 metres. Near the bridge is a campfire site complete with
shelters for barbecuing and eating.

Fishing
Kouvola has a diverse range of possibilities for fishing. The Kymijoki River, Southern Finland’s largest river for salmon and sea trout,
flows through the region, and there are also many other bodies of
water from large lakes to smaller lakes, ponds, rivers and different
waterways.
Fishing in the region is substantial. Depending on the location, fish
that will take the lure or bait include salmon, trout, grayling, powan,
zander, pike and perch. All kinds of fishing can be practised from
trolling and spinning to angling, ice fishing and fly fishing.
The Kouvola region has many peaceful bodies of water that are
excellent lure fishing areas. These include the joint permit areas of
Vuohijärvi, Karijärvi, Pyhäjärvi, Niska-Suolajärvi, Iitti and Valkeala-Utti.
National fishing permits are sold at all 720 R-kiosks around the
country. Fishing permit fees can also be paid by mobile phone, post
or online. Many sports shops and village stores also sell fishing permits. No permit is needed for ice fishing. When you go fishing, don’t
forget to take your receipt with you!

WHEN SUMMER
TURNS TO WINTER
Cross-country and downhill skiing
Winter at Kuusanlampi
Kouvola is home to about 360 km of well-maintained ski tracks.
About 106 km are illuminated until 10 pm. Cross-country skiing
is a great experience! On skis you can immediately escape the city
centre.
At Kuusanlampi, once the winter ice has arrived, a tour skating
track, cross-country ski track, tobogganing run and ice track for cars
begin service. The tour skating track is about 3 km long. You can rent
the required equipment.
In winter, the Mielakka Ski Resort has six slopes for downhill skiing, a half-pipe, cross-country skiing on illuminated tracks, a sledging hill and sledging tube, as well as equipment rental and maintenance. The resort is located about 2 km from the centre of Kouvola.

In summer, environmentally-friendly slope cars drive down the
slopes at Mielakka. Hidden away in the cafeteria building are some
fantastic conference, party and sauna facilities. In summer, these are
only open by appointment.
