Christmas Concert at 7pm on Saturday,
December 6th at St. John the Baptist GOC in Des

On Stewardship and the Orthodox Life - Part 6:
“You are Not Your Own”
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the
Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You
are not your own; you were bought with a price. So
glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
God is not dependent upon us for the advancement
of His cause. He might have made the angels his
ambassadors of Truth. He might have made know His
will as He did on Mt. Sinai in thunder and lightning.
But, in order to cultivate a spirit of stewardship in us,
God has chosen to use human beings to do this work.
Every act of self-sacrifice for the good of others
will strengthen the spirit of stewardship in the giver’s
heart. Every act of self-sacrifice for the good of others
will make the giver closer to Christ, who “was rich, yet
for our sakes became poor.” All of the good gifts God
gives to us will prove only a curse, unless we use them
to benefit others, and to advance the cause of Christ on
earth.
It is the increasing devotion to money-getting that
deadens the spirit of the Church. When the head and
hands are constantly occupied with planning and toiling
for the accumulation of riches, the claims of God and
humanity are forgotten. If God has blessed us with
prosperity, it is not that our time and attention should be
diverted from Him and given that that which He has
lent us. The Giver is greater than the gift. “We have
been bought with a price…we are not our own.”
We are the recipients of the abundant fruit of
Christ’s self-sacrifice; and yet, when work is to be
done, when our money is wanted to help in the work of
the Church, we shrink for duty and ask to be excused.
Indifference and selfishness seal our senses to the
claims of God and His Holy Church.
Are we to recline at our ease and forget the very
reason why Christ went to the Cross, suffered, and died
to take away the punishment for sin? Rather let us give
while we have the power. Let us do while we have the
strength. Let us work while it is day. Let us, rather than
reclining at our ease, devote our time and our means to
the service of God, and “glorify God in our bodies.”

DCFS Christmas Gift Drive
Let our kids do the shopping … This year, our
Youth Ministry has volunteered to do the shopping and
delivery of gifts for the annual DCFS Christmas Gift
Drive. But, your donations are still needed to support
this effort.
This is how it will work this year: On the Officer
Counter is a listing of children’s names and ages.
Inside a Christmas Box are numbered envelopes.
Choose the children you would like to sponsor and then
put your donation in the corresponding envelope.
Checks should be made payable to Saint Michael’s
Youth.
~ Write your name in the upper corner on the
Christmas Wish List Sheet.
~ Find the corresponding envelope with the child’s
name. Place your check in the envelope.
~ Provide envelope to Father Sam or Deacon Peter
Sodini by November 16th.
Here’s more good news: For every dollar donated,
a Secret Santa will match your donation with a
$2 donation. $1.00 will be used to assist in purchasing
gifts and $1.00 will go toward the Youth Ministry.

CLERGY BENEVOLENT FUND
Our Diocese has established a “Clergy Benevolent
Fund” to aid our Priests and Paňis in cases of
catastrophe. We will take another parish collection
to support this fund on Sunday, November 2nd.
The John C. Kulis Charitable Foundation, through
the efforts of our Diocesan Trustee, Attorney Steven M.
Laduzinsky, who is Vice President of the Foundation,
has gifted our benevolent fund with a donation of
$25,000, together with the pledge of matching funds
up to that amount that may be made by our clergy and
organizations until December 1, 2014. Please make
checks payable to: ACROD Clergy Benevolent Fund.

Beloved Clergy, Godly Monastics, and Blessed Faithful,
We greet you with joy as we announce a new date for College Student Sunday, benefiting Orthodox Christian
Fellowship. Each October, college students at OCF chapters across the continent participate in Orthodox Awareness
Month on their campuses. Through fellowship, education, worship, and service, our college students seek
opportunities to deepen their own faith in Jesus Christ while sharing the Orthodox Tradition with love and humility
to their peers on campus. To support the incredible efforts of our students, College Student Sunday will now be the
third Sunday of October, running in conjunction with OCF’s Orthodox Awareness Month. This year, the date falls
on OCTOBER 19.
Our OCF student leaders have chosen 1 Peter 2:9 as the theme for the 2014-2015 academic school year. How
inspiring it is to see that our young people earnestly desire to live out our common vocation of Christ’s royal
priesthood! But as we all know, they will face many challenges as they strive to do God’s will in an environment
that all too often opposes Christ’s message of love, mercy, purity, and righteousness. Many of our students will be
facing a challenging spiritual environment, and it is our responsibility as a Church to encourage and guide them
where they are--on campus.
Orthodox Christian Fellowship continues to provide students with opportunities to encounter Christ and grow in
their Orthodox faith through their growing network of on campus OCF chapters led by talented students, clergy, and
lay advisors as well as through programs such as College Conference, Real Break, and the Summer Leadership
Institute. OCF continues to make every effort to connect new freshmen to campus chapters and local parishes
through the First Forty Days Initiative, which involves extensive effort from our student leaders and spiritual
advisors to contact every incoming freshman within their first forty days on campus. We wholeheartedly pray for
and strongly encourage your support of these noble efforts by ensuring that the contact information for your parish’s
graduating high school seniors be sent each and every year to the OCF National Office for dissemination to our
dedicated local chapters!
Additionally, with the greatest sincerity and earnestness, we encourage your committed financial support of this
fundamental ministry which functions completely on the contributions of caring Orthodox faithful like
yourselves. We are asking that a special collection be taken on this day in support of the good work of OCF, and we
encourage the entire faithful--clergy, parents, grandparents, godparents, aunts, uncles, and friends of our treasured
college students--to be generous in your offering of support to this ministry on their behalf. If for some reason
October 19 is not a good date for your parish, please make the collection on the Sunday before or after. Donations

Established by His Grace, Bishop John, of Thrice Blessed Memory, the Distinguished
Diocesan Donors Fund , has been an important source of funding for the establishment,
maintenance and expansion of our many diocesan apostolates. An annual donation of
$100.00 or more, qualifies diocesan members and friends to be recognized as a
Distinguished Diocesan Donor. Each "3D" member is honored at a complimentary
dinner which is held in the donor’s local deanery. It is asked that all donations be made
by September 1st of each year.
