Toyota Language Center 2014-2015 WINTER HOLIDAY CONVERSATIONAL JAPANESE For Beginning to Advanced Students The curriculum is conversation-intensive, with the aim of strengthening the student’s ability to communicate effectively in social situations. The course materials will emphasize vocabulary and grammar that is useful in everyday activities. Each class meets twice a week for a total of 18 hours of instruction. LEVEL I (Introductory) For students with no previous background in Japanese. Elementary conversation, vocabulary and simple sentence structure will be taught. The focus will be on maintaining a conversation and learning and using situational vocabulary. This course provides conversational practice to master common expressions including keigo, as well as communication strategies used to speak Japanese at a fluent or native level. Knowledge of at least 1,000 kanji is required. Intended for the most advanced students, this special course uses kanji, not only to increase students’ writing proficiency, but also to improve their vocabulary and conversational skills. VII-A MONDAYS & WEDNESDAYS DEC. 10, 15 & 17, JAN. 5, 7, 12, 14, 21 & 26 6 – 8 PM Instructor: Inkyo INSTRUCTORS: All of the Toyota Language Center’s instructors are native Japanese with extensive experience. Ms. Yuko Aizawa has taught at the Sendagaya Japanese Institute in Tokyo, Japan and at the Royal Hawaiian Academy in the United States. She has been an instructor at the Toyota Language Center since 1994. Ms. Keiko Hama has taught Japanese in Germany and the United States for over ten years. She received her master’s degree in Japanese Sociology and Linguistics at the University of Heidelberg. Since then, she has been an interpreter, translator and Japanese teacher in the private and public sectors. Ms. Masako Inkyo has a university degree in Japanese Calligraphy and a license to teach literature in Middle and High School. She is a member of the three largest shodō professional associations in Japan. She has received many awards, including first prizes in shodō and pen calligraphy and kanji in national competitions sponsored by the Ministry of Education. Ms. Mami Miyashita earned a Japanese Teaching License in Japan, a certificate of Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language from The Ohio State University and a master’s degree from West Chester University. She worked with foreign language education for more than twenty years, most recently at the University of Delaware from 1999 to 2005. Ms. Kazuko Nakazawa has a Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Literature. She is a graduate of Japan Society’s Teacher Training Program. She has taught Japanese privately and in an after-school program in Japan for three years, and privately in the United States for two years. She has been on Japan Society’s teaching staff since the summer of 2010. Ms. Toshiko Omori has an MA in TESOL from New York University. She has taught Japanese at the United Nations International School and Phillips Exeter Academy. She currently teaches at NYU and The New School. HOW TO REGISTER 1. Some classes fill up quickly!
