NYSA 2013/2014 College Scholarship Winners Announced
McKenzie Mills and Jacob Hoogerwerf
The Northshore Youth Soccer Association (NYSA)
recently announced their 2014 College Scholarship
recipients. The Class of 2014 graduates, McKenzie
Mills and Jacob Hoogerwerf, each received one
thousand dollar scholarships.
In addition to her NYSA and school sports activities,
Mills has participated in numerous community service
activities with The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research
Center, Royal Family Kids Camp, and the National
Honor Society with projects supporting fresh water
wells in foreign countries and providing care packages
for soldiers and the homeless in our community.
McKenzie plans on putting her referee license to good
use this summer and is preparing for her nursing
studies this fall at Washington State University.
Applications were accepted from graduating high
school seniors who planned to enter an accredited
institution of higher learning during the 2014/15
academic year. Two winners were selected based on
their positive involvement and commitment to the
NYSA program and the community, as well as their
participation in the NYSA coaching, referee and
other programs. Mills and Hoogerwerf were honored for their outstanding contributions to their
schools and community, along with success on the
soccer field and in their academic achievements.
Hoogerwerf, a Woodinville High School senior, has
played recreational soccer with NYSA for thirteen
years. He began his refereeing career with NYSA also
currently holding a grade 8 license, with plans to upgrade to grade 7 in the near future. Twice nominated
for the Washington Youth Soccer Referee of the Year
Award, Jacob has been involved in numerous tournaments and state championship games. Academically,
he has been devoted to business programs and competitions through DECA and Future Business Leaders
of America (FBLA). In addition he is an annual participant in the Relay for Life and has participated in numerous community service activities through the National Honor Society. Hoogerwerf will be attending
the University of Washington in the fall working toward a degree in International Business.
Mills, a Cedar Park Christian High School senior, has
played on her FC Alliance premier team for the past
seven years, having served as captain for the last
three. She’s also assisted several coaches with
younger aged teams in training, mentoring and
demonstrating skills.
The Northshore Youth Soccer Association awards
scholarships annually and supports teams in Bothell,
Woodinville and Kenmore. Since its founding, the
NYSA has grown to include several programs at different skill levels, representing thousands of athletes
ages six to nineteen.
Congratulations to
McKenzie &
Jacob !
NYSA President, Jim Bates (middle), congratulates Jacob
Hoogerwerf & McKenzie Mills on their recent scholarship
awards.

NYSA COACH OF THE YEAR
NOMINATIONS
Nominations Due to the NYSA Office by January 21, 2015
We want you to let us know about your outstanding coach for the 2014/2015 season!
NYSA participates in the US Youth Soccer program that recognizes coaches who participate in the
WA Youth Soccer program, honoring their expertise and personal accomplishments. A Boys Recreational and Competitive Coach and a Girls Recreational and Competitive Coach selected at the local level are then nominated to District II, WA Youth Soccer, and ultimately to USYSA for the purpose
of recognizing those coaches for excellence on and off the field as well as their contribution to the
community and the game of soccer.
Specific information asked for includes coach licensing, example of sportsmanship, how the coach
promotes player development, how he/she enhances personal coaching development, and ways he/
she positively influences soccer beyond their own team. This packet will be a team effort as it
requires two to six letters of recommendation – it won’t take very long when compared to the number
of hours your coach puts in during a season. Although it would be a nice idea to surprise your coach
with the honor, he or she will need to provide a personal cover letter of acceptance with the
nomination.
Please consider nominating your favorite coach; tell us how he or she positively affects your team
and the community. A Girls Recreational and Competitive Coach and a Boys Recreational and Competitive Coach of the Year will be selected by the NYSA Board.
Mail or bring packets to the NYSA Office:
12810 NE 178th St, Suite 202, Woodinville, WA 98072
Look for an entry in the “What’s New?” section of the NYSA website in December for a link to the
“Of The Year” packet. Or you can search the state website at http://www.washingtonyouthsoccer.org
Employers Match Funds for Volunteer
Hours
Did you know there is an easy way to contribute to NYSA? Many employers
offer matching funds to Non Profit Organizations for volunteer hours –
Check with your HR Department to see if your company has a program.
You can also designate Northshore Youth Soccer as the recipient for your United Way donations.
The donations will go directly to NYSA to help fund scholarships and youth programs. Please
consider helping to keep all the kids who want to play soccer on the pitch!

The Referee Corner:
Scott Engel, VP of Referees
With the fall 2014 season well underway, there will be a change in the weather coming. Referees: please
remember to wear extra socks and layer your clothing to stay warm and dry. The players are allowed to
wear sweatshirts under their jerseys, but hoods must be tucked in - this is for safety reasons.
If you encounter problems during your match, please let the office, myself, any Referee Assignor or Club
President know immediately so we may deal with the issue.
Remember that 10 years from now no one will remember who won or lost a game, but they will remember
the precise moment when someone got hurt. Call more fouls than you think you should, keep the games
safe. No one complains that a game is too safe, only that it got out of hand. When a player gets knocked
down and is injured (even if no foul occurred), please look at it as an opportunity to stop the game (if there
is no immediate goal-scoring chance) and bring a coach onto the field. Even the U18 and U19 players are
still just kids. Safety is our primary focus in youth sports.
Just a reminder that Referees who complete at least 15 match assignments before December 31, 2014
are eligible for a $50 Referee Bonus. Those of you who have already completed your 15 matches will receive your bonus check along with your October pay.
2015 Referee Recertification
Returning referees with a 2014 badge who want to referee next year must get recertified for 2015. Referees with a 2015 badge year are already certified. The requirements are the same as last year.
Requirements For Grade 8 Recertification:
1) 2 hours of classroom Recertification training
2) Register for and complete one of the “Existing Referee (Grades 8-7) wishing to recertify” clinics on the
www.WAReferees.org website. (DO NOT complete the online course by going directly to the
USSoccer website!)
3) Pass the Grade 8 Referee Test (this test is included in the “Existing Referee (Grades 8-7) wishing to
recertify” course)
Process to Recertify:
 Log on to www.WAreferees.org with your WASRC Site Name and password
 Click on Instruction: Clinic and Event Schedule
 Choose “Existing referee (Grade 8 – 7) wishing to recertify” from the pulldown menu
 Choose an online course. (NYSA is hosting three: 10/14/14, 11/10/14 and 12/11/14)
For other referee grades (i.e. grade 9, 7, 6, etc.) please see http://www.wareferees.org/Administration/
Referee_Certification_Requirements.aspx for the recert requirements. Any questions about the
wareferees.org website should be submitted to their webmaster, [email protected].
2014 Cranberry Cup Matches
This coming Thanksgiving weekend is the 6th Annual NYSA Cranberry Cup Tournament. The Cup matches will be posted on the website ahead of that weekend
for you to self assign. Match Reports need to be filed as usual and payment will
be included in the monthly referee checks. These matches DO count towards the
15 game referee bonus. Please check the NYSA website for the posting of the

Entry Level Referee Clinic
Hosted by
Northshore Youth Soccer Association (NYSA)
Saturday, January 10, 2015
8:30 AM - 5:00 PM
For 2015 Badge
Classroom sessions held at the NYSA Office
12810 NE 178th St. Suite 202, Woodinville, WA 98072
Field sessions held at the Woodinville Sports Fields
17401 133rd Avenue NE, Woodinville, WA 98072
Northshore Youth Soccer is offering this entry-level clinic for our members who are interested in becoming a licensed USSF
Referee and working matches in 2015. Select/premier regular season matches will be played around the Northshore area in
January-April. Youth summer tournaments begin in June and the regular fall season begins in September. Due to the lack of
youth recreational soccer matches in January-August, it is suggested that attendees of this clinic be adults or youth over the
age of 16. Interested individuals under the age of 16 should take the clinic along with a parent/guardian. Brand new young
referees without a family member who also officiates will find it difficult to work games until summer/fall of 2015 and should
take a clinic closer to that time. NYSA typically hosts these in July and August. Questions about the clinic can be directed towards Ian Johnson, [email protected].
Washington Entry Level Clinics are composed of two parts - an Online portion and an in-person Clinic. The online clinic is
made up of 18 online videos covering the 17 Laws of the Game (LOTG). Each video is followed by three to five questions covering the presentation of the law just completed. You are not confirmed for the classroom session until the online training
is completed. No exceptions. Online training could take up to 6 hours to complete. Students should target completion no
later than 3 days before the classroom session, because if there is a technical problem you will need time to fix it. When
starting the online clinic you will be asked to enter your name, your State Association (Washington) and the Clinic Number of
the in-person Clinic you will be attending. The Clinic number is listed above. To complete the online clinic portion go to:
https://www.wareferees.org/MemberLogin.aspx
How to Register for the Clinic if you are from NYSA
Pre-registration is required for the clinics. Register at www.wareferees.org/AvailableClinics.aspx
 From the pulldown menu select: Entry—Never been a USSF Referee before
 Select Clinic Area: 02-East King County District
 Select Badge Year: 2015 for the July and August Clinics
 Click the Register link for one of the clinics listed above
 Complete your personal information and set up your User Name and Password
 You will be asked to select a Referee Grade Level (Referee 8)
 Continue to follow the online instructions and proceed to Checkout
 Total Fees: $105 (the yearly $50 USSF fee + $40 facility fee + $15 WASRC instructor fees)
Notes:
The referee clinic “grade level” refers to a FIFA Referee Level; it has nothing to do with school grade levels.
US Soccer and NYSA provides training and support to new referees to help build confidence before working your first game.

Congratulations to our own Amy Bartlow from
for being the
Washington Youth Soccer Volunteer of the Month earlier this year.
Amy Bartlow
Board Member & Team Manager
FC Alliance Premier SC
January 2014 Volunteer of the Month
"Amy volunteers at FC Alliance as an executive board member and full board member. Twice a month she attends club
meetings. Aside from the hours doing this job, she is also the team manager for two teams. She has been the manager of
the U14 boys team for five years and her first with the U10 Boys. She has been a tremendous help for the club and individual teams, and demonstrates great leadership to other parents. Furthermore, she has financially supported our club scholarship program through various contributions and also donated gear to other kids in the club with limited resources. Aside from
the volunteer hours she puts in, she also has a full time job. It’s amazing at how she is able to manage all this with the small
window of time she has." – Hugo Alcaraz
Nominate A Deserving Person for
Volunteer Of The Month!
Without volunteers to help manage over 180 Clubs and 37 Associations within Washington Youth Soccer, our collective organization would not be where we are today. So what better way to show thanks to these people, then to highlight their work
and give them a small gift of our appreciation!
With a deadline of the last day of each month, Washington Youth Soccer will be accepting nominations for spectacular, hardworking volunteers. These special individuals can serve in any capacity (coach, administrator, registrar, field liner, etc.) provided they are members of Washington Youth Soccer.
At the end of each month, Washington Youth Soccer will determine and notify the winner. Thanks to the generous support of
our sponsors, each winner will also receive two tickets to a Seattle Sounders match, two Sports Authority gift certificates, two
Golazo drink vouchers, and a Chipotle burrito party for 10!
If you have any questions please contact Matt Moran at [email protected].
