works from the Matti Koivurinta Foundation art collection

Unknown Territories is a journey into the land of dream images and utopias. The exhibition, presenting the
Matti Koivurinta Foundation art collection, has an atmosphere that shifts from playful to serious. Strange
visions can be encountered in the exhibition. Wavering reality, images that arise from the unconscious and
dream worlds are all present in the works of the exhibition. Surrealism and fairy-tale creatures depict the
fantastical, but some of the works are also about the tangible reality.
The earliest of the works on display are from the late 1920s and early 1930s, the newest from last year.
The exhibition includes works from 23 artists: Hans-Christian Berg, Max Ernst, Rainer Fetting, Simo
Hannula, Veikko Hirvimäki, IC-98, Alpo Jaakola, Ulla Jokisalo, Asger Jorn, Anish Kapoor, Hannu
Karjalainen, Johanna Kiivaskoski, Veikko Laukkanen, Nikolai Lehto, André Masson, Viljo Mäkinen,
Otto Mäkilä, Maritta Nurmi, Ulla Rantanen, Sulho Sipilä, Kain Tapper, Anna Tuori and Andy Warhol.
The Matti Koivurinta Foundation art collection contains works from the recent history of Finnish and
Western art. The oldest works in the collection are from the late 19th Century, but the emphasis is on
the time period after the middle 1950s and on the present day. The collection holds 650 works and is
increased yearly with new acquisitions.
