th 19 Oct 2014 News Bulletin North North Ryde Ryde Anglican Anglican C CH HU UR RC CH H WHY I BELIEVE- Laureate Professor Graeme Clark AC, FAA, FRS, Hon FRCS At the Cavendish Physics Laboratory at Cambridge University are the words in Psalm 111:2 "Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them." I have been committed to science for a number of decades and also spent the same period considering the importance of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I have come to learn that many leading philosophers and scientists see the laws that have produced the physical universe and the origin of biological life on Earth are the result of a remarkable intelligence, and their origin is next to impossible from mindless chance. One of the most exciting discoveries in the last two centuries has been the functioning of the human brain: probably the most complex structure in the Universe. The brain is more than an incredibly complex arrangement of electrical circuits, connections and proteins; it is responsible for our thinking, feeling, morality and creativity. This is a great mystery, and I believe can be best explained by the fact that we have been created in the image of a God who is personal. The nature of a personal God is supremely revealed ST JOHN’S NORTH RYDE ANGLICAN Office Phone: (02) 8004 0513 [email protected] 152 Cox’s Rd North Ryde 2113 (Opposite Coxs Rd Shopping Mall) www.northrydeanglican.org.au Online: View our bulletin & hear our Sermons Our Mission: Share Life! in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus is undoubtedly an historical figure attested to by historians of the time and ancient historians today, as well as the writers of the New Testament, most of whom vouched for the facts of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection with their lives. A central tenet of Christianity is that "God the father so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son [Jesus] that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life" John 3:16. The love and self- sacrifice shown by Jesus in his earthly ministry were superlative. There is no one in history who is his equal. His life leaves us in awe. He is the cause of countless lives being changed to become more like Him in showing love and selfsacrifice. Finally, I am full of wonder that God would answer my prayers and enable me to reproduce speech by electrical stimulation of the brain's auditory pathways. What a privilege it has been to see profoundly deaf adults and children given new life though the modern cochlear implant. As Isaiah is quoted in the bible as saying "Lord all we have accomplished you have done for us" Isaiah 26:12 NIV. Prayer: Dear God, thank you that you have made an ordered world for us to inhabit that shows your great power and glory. Thank you that we can know you by your dear Son, Jesus Christ, who died for our sins. Bible Verse: "Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them." December 10-14 2014 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. (1 Tim 4:8) We are again welcoming a team of 15 Macquarie university students to billet with us over 5 days mid December. Being a later date this year, we are considering adding some additional activities for private school students as their school year will have ended on Friday 12th. Our theme will be health, and we are planning a number of new initiatives to connect with local residents and our business community with finding true health in connection with the Lord Jesus. Sydney Synod A draft of the next form of the diocesan mission will be put to the Synod of the Diocese of Sydney which starts next Monday. The previous Diocesan Mission was adopted in 2002 to “multiply Bible-based Christian fellowships, congregations and churches”, with the goal of seeing “10 per cent of the population of the region of the Diocese in Bible-based churches in 10 years”. After the 2012 Synod, the “What’s Next?” committee was set up and it found strong support among parishes for retaining a Diocesan Mission, in a new form. Now, Synod members have been sent a draft that Archbishop Davies says is “a vision statement (what we hope to see) as well as a mission statement (what we want to do)”. There are four priorities with measurable goals. The goals start with the National Church Life Survey figures of 2011 and will be benchmarked against later NCLS figures. One of the key goals is to increase the number of newcomers in congregations. Newcomers are defined as those adults who were not regularly attending any church in the previous five years. The NCLS in 2011 put the percentage of newcomers at 9 per cent, and the new goal is 12 per cent by 2020. Other goals include helping people use their gifts, deepening spiritual maturity, increasing the number of people from non-English-speaking backgrounds and the numbers of children staying in churches after they grow up. “No document will cover everything that everyone believes should be incorporated,” Dr Davies said. “Some parishes and organisations will develop their own local priorities. However, I am hoping that the Synod will come to a common mind on the kind of vision, mission, priorities and goals that this document proposes for the Diocese as a whole.” Comprehensive Synod coverage begins on sydneyanglicans.net next Monday. Synod sits for five days, 13,14 and 15th October and then 20th and 21st October. Synod begins with a special service in St Andrew's Cathedral at 1.30pm on Monday. The service will be led by the Archbishop with Bishop Peter Tasker preaching. Bishop Tasker will also lead Bible studies at the start of each Synod session. Church Camping Weekend 2014 / 2015 Finances Oct 25-26th At our parish council meeting last Thursday our treasurer presented the above financial position at the end of September. Thanks to your generosity, we are meeting all our current costs. However, our mission minded parish council has set a budget that seeks to facilitate forward mission growth. Current week offertory is 25% down on where we would like it to be. Can you reconsider your finances? Thanks for your pledges at the vision night—can you please follow up those with action, and ideally contribute via direct deposit. Please note we have two tax effective accounts which assist you in being more generous. Please speek to Francis Gosling for more information—9878 3840. PRAYER POINTS WHAT DO CHRISTIANS BELIEVE? The bible explains that our world is God’s good creation, a display of his honour and majesty. However, humanity has chosen to try to run life independently from God. This has disastrous consequences. Life lived in opposition to the maker naturally breaks down—we cannot control God’s world without him. We begin to experience the just judgement from the maker we have rebelled against. Creation no longer reflects the majesty and honour of God. God could justly put an end to his rebellious creatures, but in his love, treats us differently to what we deserve. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” John, Chapter 3 verse 16 Prayer points are compiled in the church office. Please email [email protected] or phone 02 8004 0513 (John 3:16 Mandarin) (John 3:16 Japanese) Jesus, the Son of God, is God’s rescue plan for his rebellious creatures. Jesus did not rebel against God—he was perfect. He is God’s gift to us in that he, being the perfect human, can be punished or judged in our place. On the cross Jesus Christ dies taking the punishment of separation from God that we all deserve. Therefore, anyone who believes in him can escape God’s anger. But that is not all, they can reconnect with God and start to experience life the way it should be, finding true freedom in obediently serving our creator. The bible explains that this sacrificial action of Jesus brings great honour to God. All who believe in Jesus continue to bring honour to God. But God’s patience with ongoing rebels who bring him dishonour will run out, and Jesus will soon return to eternally punish. Christians are eternally thankful to Jesus as our saviour, and strive to live rightly under him as Lord and master. The bible explains that we need supernatural help to do this. We can never be thankful enough or good enough to earn ‘saved’ status. We must be saved first, then thankfulness and obedience rightly follow.
