The RNOH provides a comprehensive range of neuro-musculoskeletal healthcare, ranging from hip and knee replacements to orthopaedic medicine and specialist surgery for spinal deformity and peripheral nerve injury. As a national and international centre of excellence, the RNOH treats patients from the UK and across the world, many of whom have been referred by other hospital consultants for second opinions or for treatment of complex or rare conditions. Patients benefit from a team of highly specialised consultants, many of whom are nationally and internationally recognised for their expertise and experience. The RNOH plays a major role in teaching with 20% of all UK orthopaedic surgeons receiving training at the Trust. Our teaching and clinical effectiveness are enhanced by our work in research and development and academic links with University College London. By choosing to have your treatment as a private patient within an NHS hospital, you are assured of a comprehensive range of orthopaedic services on-site.There will always be a doctor who can see you in an emergency. The hospital has a team of senior specialist nurses, a high dependency unit and an intensive care unit. Income generated by private patients is invested back into the RNOH to assist in supporting the services, facilities and improvements provided to NHS patients. This benefits all patients who come to the hospital. Consultants are supported in their work by nurses, therapists and other specialist clinical staff who are experts in their particular fields of orthopaedic care. 3 Our services The RNOH has a large number of consultants, many with special interests and particular areas of expertise. An estimate of anticipated charges of preadmission assessment, accommodation and meals, nursing care, operating theatre fees, diagnostic tests, treatment and all drugs and dressings for your stay will be prepared for you on enquiry by our admission and discharge co-ordinators. However, it is very important to understand that this is an estimate only, and because of the uncertainties of medical care and individual needs, costs may vary up or down from those anticipated. The RNOH works closely with most medical insurers. Patients who have private medical insurance are advised that they should check with their insurer if there are any limits or restrictions in their cover and that they are covered for diagnostics and treatment at all stages in their care pathway. Our admission and discharge co-ordinators are available to help and advise if required. Please be aware that patients are responsible for any costs not covered by their insurance policy. All self-funding patients will be asked to pay the full anticipated cost of their treatment before admission. Payment may be made by credit or debit card. Please note that as we are a national centre of excellence and many of our patients are referred for second opinions or with complex problems, we currently do not offer fixed price packages. 8 International patients We welcome patients from all over the world and work closely with medical referrers and sponsors including country embassies, country health offices and military offices. We also welcome private individuals wishing to travel to the UK for expert and specialist treatment. We can assess suitability for treatment based on the provision of a medical report with imaging, As we are an international centre of excellence, and many of our patients have highly complex problems, we offer an approximate treatment cost rather than a fixed price package of care. The Private Patient Unit’s office will be pleased to assist with any enquiries. Many of our nurses, both adult and children’s, have undertaken further training in orthopaedic care. Our nurses are supported by a matron and a range of senior specialist nurses, including our acute pain nurse, tissue viability nurse and critical care outreach team. Physiotherapy and occupational therapy form an integral part of your treatment and recovery. Our therapists provide assessment, advice and treatment on request from your consultant both at your pre-operative assessment and during your admission. 12 13 14 Infection prevention and control Prevention and control of Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAIs) is a key priority at the RNOH. We continue to have very low rates of infection, however it remains the Trust’s top priority to maintain these low numbers. All patients will be screened for MRSA either at the preassessment clinics or on admission to a ward, as per the Department of Health’s guidelines. The senior nurse for infection control will follow up all patients who test positive for MRSA. Through regular inspections and audits, the senior nurse for infection control monitors environmental cleanliness in conjunction with our matron. The RNOH website is updated regularly with the latest infection rates and seasonal information relating to infection control: www.rnoh.nhs.uk/clinical-services/infection-control 15 Pre-admission and after-care All patients are offered pre-admission screening prior to surgery. Once an admission date has been confirmed, patients are contacted by our pre-admission nurse to make an appointment at their convenience. The screening is led by a registered nurse for adults and a registered nurse for children, and lasts approximately one hour. Pre-admission screening is important in ensuring patients are fit for operation by taking a detailed medical history and assessment as well as all the appropriate pre-operative tests and investigations required, as specified by the consultant surgeon and consultant anaesthetist. These may include a blood test, ECG (tracing of your heart rate and rhythm), a nose swab and urine test. Our nursing staff support patients in making arrangements for their ongoing care after discharge and we offer a followup dressing clinic for patients who prefer the reassurance of having their wound care performed by a member of our nursing team. Pre-admission screening enables patients to gain a clear understanding of the planned surgery and the hospital stay, the expected pathway of recovery and any family support or discharge plans that may need to be prepared. There is clear evidence that attending pre-admission screening reduces the risk of cancellation of surgery due to pre-existing medical problems and reduces length of stay due to better discharge planning. 16 After-care 17 What our patients say We value all feedback from our patients on how we can improve the service we deliver. Patients and relatives are encouraged to give feedback in a variety of ways. These include speaking to the senior sister or matron directly, completing a patient comment card, Say So form or participating in the Trust’s Real Time Patient Feedback initiative. Feedback from patients: “ “I am writing to commend the entire staff on the Private Patient Unit. I am a nurse and I observed very high standards of nursing care, encouragement and reassurance. Every time I entered the ward, the welcome from the staff was overwhelming, which made a very difficult time in my and my family’s life less stressful.” “My husband, as a patient, and I as a relative have had three admissions to the Private Patient Unit in the last two months. We want you to know that we have never met a kinder, more caring or more efficient team. All the staff - in no particular order - hotel, medical and office - were all in their own way amazing.” 18 ” How to find us London underground/public transport By car Take the Jubilee Line to Stanmore.
