DUV NITRIDES LED: CHALLENGES
AND PERSPECTIVES
Among the many benefits of electronic illumination
and perhaps the most valuable is the capability
to manipulate the spectrum in real time. The gold
standard for illumination is daylight which cycles
through large changes in both spectum and intensity
over the course of a day, through out the year, and
across the globe. Beyond mimicking daylight or fire,
the production of illumination content can have a
positive impact on health, well being, retail turnover,
human productivity, and enjoyment. This talk will show
some examples of how this is done in nature and with
existing products on the market. In addition a look
to what the future may hold for specturally tunable
illumination systems will be provided.
In recent years, the performance of Deep UV LED
(255-355nm AlGaN-based UV-LED) has increased
markedly. At NIKKISO, we have overcome many issues
plaguing the industry like power output, lifetime for
UVB (280-320nm) and UVC (<280nm) LEDs. In this
presentation we will review the challenges of deep
UV-LED in term of efficiency and fabrication, and we
will discuss the potential market penetration we can
expect in the coming years.
After earning a degree in electrical engineering from
Penn State, Steve Paolini joined Hewlett Packard
Optoelectronics Division in 1981. There he held a
variety of engineering and management positions
in California, Japan, and Malaysia. In 2000, he joined
Philips Lumileds and held management positions
in intellectual property, business development, and
product development. In 2007 he founded Telelumen
LLC to focus on the recording and playback of light.
He became the CTO at Lunera Lighting Inc. in 2009

BIODYNAMIC LIGHTING IN CARE OF
THE ELDERLY
The advancement of SSL Technology and increased
research findings of the Non-Visual Effects of Light
have opened up many new possibilities of developing
research applied lighting solutions. This presentation
will discuss actual pilot projects that Human Centric
Lighting Committee members have implemented
in key verticals such as healthcare facilities, schools,
corporate offices & professional sports facilities.
Modern societies are increasingly feeling the effects
of population aging. Problems related to old age,
such as dementia, are prompting a rethink of the
requirements in senior care. Scientific research has
shown that light helps to control key hormone levels
in our body that regulate our sleep/wake cycle and
biological functions; playing an active and vital role in
our biological health and well-being. For people who
are confined mostly to the indoors, such as the elderly
and physically impaired, a lack of daylight can have
a profound negative impact on their health, at times
leading to sleep disorders or even depression. We
need a “thinking” light to help those who experience
a lack of natural lighting by recreating and restoring
a proper 24-hour lighting cycle in their daily living
environment. This presentation aims to summarize our
findings and share it with people who are interested in
this important issue.
John Hwang is the founder and CEO of PlanLED and
the Executive Director of the Human Centric Lighting
organization (HCL). John used to be in investment
banking and finance and became involved in the
advancing of global LED lighting movement. Mr.
Hwang is the person who originally coined the term
“human centric lighting”. HCL advocates for the
practical and creative applications of LED lighting,
which results in various proven ecological and
humanitarian benefits.
David Lau works is Sales Director of Waldmann

HIGH PERFORMANCE LED FOR THE
SOLID-STATE LIGHTING USING GAN
ON SI TECHNOLOGY
White LED is a light source for the solid state lighting
because it has high luminous efficiency. In order for
solid-state lighting products to expand market share,
the cost reduction of LED is an important issue. The
GaN on Si technology is a promising solution because
it allows the use of large diameter wafers. In this
lecture, I will report on technology trends for the high
performance LEDs using GaN on Si technology and
the current state of LED technology.
Dr. Shinya Nunoue joined Toshiba in 1989,
where he was engaged in the device process, and
characterization of InGaAs based LDs and InGaN
based LDs. Since 2005, he has been the head of

GaN on Si technologies are also demonstrated.
Bulk GaN crystals for homo-epitaxial substrates
have attracted much attention because of extremely
low dislocation density realizing improvement of
device characteristics. This seminar shows current
topics for bulk GaN-based crystal and activities in
Yamaguchi University.
Toshiya Yokogawa is professor at Yamaguchi

INTEGRATION
The SSL product space has largely been addressed
by bolting components together rather than truly
integrating them. This makes sense given the
conventional model that preceded SSL; however we
have now achieved a level of sophistication that allows
integration of the electronic components and should
be delivering integrated, digital lighting solutions
that offer better quality of light, reduced flicker,
control and communications. In doing so, we will truly
drive the development of digital lighting solutions
and open new opportunities for lighting design,
building management and business models. We will
discuss this new technical paradigm and the control,
communications and sensor technologies that are
opening a new chapter in lighting.
Gerard Harbers co-founded Xicato in July 2007,
serving as CTO. Prior to Xicato, Gerard held various
positions at Philips Research Laboratories, Philips
Lighting and Lumileds. Gerard’s high-power LED
system designs included optimized lighting solutions
for many new solid-state lighting applications, such

DELIVERING OPTIMAL SSL DIMMING
PERFORMANCE IN LEGACY AND
WIRELESS SYSTEMS
One of the biggest challenges for LED lighting
designers is achieving compatibility with the multitude
of legacy dimming control systems originally designed
to work with incandescent lighting. Emerging digital
dimmers and wireless lighting control systems also
present efficiency, dimming and cost issues.
This presentation will examine the challenges of
wireless lighting control, including low-energy
Bluetooth®, Wi-Fi and ZigBee®; the problems
with legacy dimmers (phase cut, PWM, 0-10V, DALI,
toggle main switch); and the architecture trade-offs in
achieving a good dimming profile. It will also look at
emerging digital loadline transmission (DLT) receiver
technologies, such as the LEDOTRON™/DLT (IEC
62756-1) standard, that can eliminate the problems
seen with conventional phase cut dimmers and enable
low-cost smart lighting control.

LED-UTILIZED PLANT FACTORY
BUSINESS AND FUTURE PROSPECT
OF THE 6TH INDUSTRY
The plant factory in Japan is in rapid progress,
drawing much attention domestically as well as
from many countries over the world. It is important
to control lighting(color and wavelength) to fit the
different growth stages of a plant for its healthy
growth. The plant cultivation technology with the
properly controlled light condition is an innovation
that revolutionizes agricultural production in its
ten thousand years history. In this presentation, Mr.
Okazaki will describe latest examples of plant factories
using LED lighting.
Seiichi Okazaki founded Keystone Technology
Inc.in 2006 after conducting R&D of plant factory
when he was working as circuitry design engineer.
His knowledge and experience of electronics,
environment, energy, illuminating engineering and
plant physiologyhas led to success in the business
development of plant factory. Mr. Okazaki graduated

AN EXPORTER’S GUIDE TO
NORTH AMERICAN STANDARDS &
REGULATIONS
Effective marketing of solid-state lighting products in
North America requires a working knowledge of the
growing standards landscape. Without this knowledge,
at best, exporters risk losing opportunities for electric
utility incentive funding, and at worst risk an inability to
bring their products to market at all. This session will
review the latest including the development of new
standards and revisions to existing standards, some of
which are now de facto standards affecting businesses
worldwide. Documents to be reviewed includes
performance and safety standards from the ANSI, NEMA
and UL, regulations from the CEC, the US DOE and
NRCan, methods of measurement and related technical
memoranda from the IES, and market transformation
specifications including ENERGY STAR®, the
DesignLights Consortium®, and the California Quality
LED Lamps Specification.
Alex Baker manages worldwide standards & regulation
activities at Philips Lumileds. For the preceding five
years Alex managed the ENERGY STAR® lighting
program, where he lead major revisions to all of the
Program’s lighting specifications and implemented
third-party testing and certification based on ISO/IEC
standards. Alex actively participates with ANSLG, IEC,
IES, NEMA, and UL, among many other organizations.
Alex has extensive experience in commercial lighting
manufacturing and sales, as well as lighting for film and
television. He received a Master of Science in Lighting
degree from the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute.

THE SHIFT TOWARDS WIRELESS
CONNECTED LIGHTING
Over the past decade, the use of wireless connected
devices has become widespread. Increasingly,
companies are introducing lighting products that
benefit from this shift towards wireless connected
systems. These new lighting products have easier
lighting controls and offer new value-added
functionalities. The lighting industry needs a unified
approach on the type of wireless connectivity which
it implements, to prevent incompatible products,
market confusion, slower market adoption and limited
energy savings potential. To address this issue, The
Connected Lighting Alliance, comprised of the
leading companies in the lighting industry, executed
a thorough study on wireless connectivity standards,
which resulted in the endorsement of ZigBee Light
Link as the preferred common open standard for
residential connected lighting applications. This
presentation will address the challenges and trends in
the field of wireless connected lighting, elaborate on
the endorsement of ZigBee Light Link, and provide
insights on the alliance’s current focus on indoor
professional lighting applications.
Simon den Uijl is the Secretary General of The
Connected Lighting Alliance, and a Standardization
Director with Philips Intellectual Property & Standards.
Simon holds a MSc. in Business Administration
from Rotterdam School of Management. In 2004 he
co-founded Epyon, a company specialized in fast
charging of lithium-ion batteries, which was later
acquired by Swiss multinational ABB.

REDUCING THE COST OF THERMAL
MANAGEMENT IN LEDS
Thermal management of LEDs is at a crossroads.
The materials traditionally used in LED packaging
have excellent thermal performance, but their cost
prohibit their use outside the package; while the
thermally-enhanced PCBs are more cost effective,
but do not offer the performance to manage the die
itself. The result is a combination of materials, with
thermal barriers in between – increasing costs and
limiting performance.
A new class of thermal PCB materials use
nanotechnology to break these traditional models.
Thermal PCBs are now being created with better
practical thermal performance than Aluminium Nitride
substrates, but with the cost models of the MCPCB
industry. This talk will outline their use, and discuss
the next step – the integration of both the MCPCB
and package substrate into the heatsink, delivering a
second step-change in the cost/performance model
of LED.
Ralph Weir is a veteran of the electronics and
semiconductor industries, having held CEO or
commercial VP positions in several successful earlystage ventures including Phase Vision, Blue Wave
Systems (acquired by Motorola), and Elixent (acquired
by Panasonic). He has built business in Europe, Asia
and the US. Weir joined the Cambridge Nanotherm
team to lead the commercialisation of their unique
thermal management technologies worldwide.
