This presentation will discuss actual pilot projects that Human Centric Lighting Committee members have implemented in key verticals such as healthcare facilities, schools, corporate offices & professional sports facilities. Modern societies are increasingly feeling the effects of population aging. Problems related to old age, such as dementia, are prompting a rethink of the requirements in senior care. Scientific research has shown that light helps to control key hormone levels in our body that regulate our sleep/wake cycle and biological functions; playing an active and vital role in our biological health and well-being. For people who are confined mostly to the indoors, such as the elderly and physically impaired, a lack of daylight can have a profound negative impact on their health, at times leading to sleep disorders or even depression. We need a “thinking” light to help those who experience a lack of natural lighting by recreating and restoring a proper 24-hour lighting cycle in their daily living environment. This presentation aims to summarize our findings and share it with people who are interested in this important issue. John Hwang is the founder and CEO of PlanLED and the Executive Director of the Human Centric Lighting organization (HCL). The materials traditionally used in LED packaging have excellent thermal performance, but their cost prohibit their use outside the package; while the thermally-enhanced PCBs are more cost effective, but do not offer the performance to manage the die itself. The result is a combination of materials, with thermal barriers in between – increasing costs and limiting performance. A new class of thermal PCB materials use nanotechnology to break these traditional models. Thermal PCBs are now being created with better practical thermal performance than Aluminium Nitride substrates, but with the cost models of the MCPCB industry. This talk will outline their use, and discuss the next step – the integration of both the MCPCB and package substrate into the heatsink, delivering a second step-change in the cost/performance model of LED. Ralph Weir is a veteran of the electronics and semiconductor industries, having held CEO or commercial VP positions in several successful earlystage ventures including Phase Vision, Blue Wave Systems (acquired by Motorola), and Elixent (acquired by Panasonic). He has built business in Europe, Asia and the US. Weir joined the Cambridge Nanotherm team to lead the commercialisation of their unique thermal management technologies worldwide. 16 www.sil-ledjapan.com 15:50-16:25 NEW APPROACHES AND MATERIALS FOR THE EFFECTIVE FRONTAL COOLING OF THE POWERFUL LIGHT-EMITTING DIODE CLUSTERS The work is dedicated to the research and development of the new frontal cooling design applying to the powerful clusters with the LED lamps using the heat-dissipating plastics, which ensure decrease the size and weight of LED lamps up to 5-10 times comparison conventional design in the market. Alexander Naumov earned his PhD in 2007 from Moscow State University of Instrument Engineering and Computer Science. Since 2007, he has been with Foxconn at the R&D section of the Advanced Material Engineering department. He was a 2012 Academician member of Academy of Technological Sciences of the Russian Federation as well as 2012 Laureate of state prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology.
