Greetings From your President
Toni Maddux
The 2014-2015 season is in full swing. The Florida State USBC WBA Board of Directors
held their September Board meeting last weekend. Newly elected 1st Vice President Carolyn
Allerheiligen was installed, along with elected Director Katheryn Auton. Appointees to the
board Donna Oberg, 2nd Vice President , Wanda Rottloff, Director and Janet Tramel, Director
also were installed, all serving 3 year terms.
Margo Buzzard is the new State Newsletter editor, replacing Andrea McCarraher who resigned
due to personal reasons. We all wish Andrea the best and thank her for the excellent job she
did as our editor. I know that Margo will do a great job and she is looking forward to working
with the bowling writers in Florida. Please appoint someone in your area to write your
association news. The Newsletter is a great way to share information with other associations.
I will be attending the State Bowling Council and Jamboree in Sarasota in a few weeks along
with Association Manager Katheryn Auton, and 2nd Vice President , Donna Oberg. That is
always a fun meeting to attend as we can enjoy the festivities as guests at the Jamboree.
Always nice to see old friends and make new ones.
I hope to see all of our women bowlers ages 50 and over at our State Women's Sr. Tournament
in Tavares. The Sr. Tournament is held the 1st two weekends in November. Entries close
October 15th. Go to our website Floridawba.com for an entry if you need one.
On a sad note we have lost two wonderful ladies that were true leaders in Florida, Regina
Stannard, former Florida WBA Board member from West Palm Beach and Liz Cocks, Rose
Kessel award winner from Ormond Beach. Both will be remembered for their leadership, their
friendly smiles and their love for the game of bowling and the lives they touched not only in
Florida but throughout the bowling industry. Rest in Peace my friends........
Wishing everyone a Happy Halloween and a Blessed Thanksgiving.

In Memory of
Regina Margaret Stannard
July 20, 1944 - August 18, 2014
I know it sounds cliché to say that it is hard to write about someone’s special life. But it is so
magnified in Regina’s case. She was a friend to all. That special quality that when you meet her,
you would not forget her. She listened to everyone’s story. She cared for her community and
loved her family passionately. And she was my friend…which makes me clouded when
explaining the emptiness in my heart because one amazing person of immense passion has left
the earth.
To say that she taught me a lesson every day I spoke to her would be a truth!
That every conversation was important and memorable…truth!
That she taught me to tolerate even those individuals shunned by others…truth!
That she was the first to hug you and kiss your cheek at every greeting…truth!
She gave 100% in everything she was involved in from being the President of the Palm Beach
County USBC Woman’s Bowling Association Board for more than 15 years to assisting in the 600
Club, NetBall Board of Directors to advice from “Roberts Rules of Order”. Her community was
really all women bowlers in the United States. She was in the Hall of Fame in the Staten Island,
New York USBC for Meritorious Service since 1994 as well as here in Palm Beach County. Her
guidance and volunteer service for the sport of bowling and for women in sports was so
numerous that I have only scratched the surface of her professional activities. But her
enthusiasm for life and YOUR welfare are the sweet amazing bits of a wonderfully complicated
woman who loved hard and drove herself to excellence. She gave me an example of a woman
in power that I will use to my benefit forever as her friend. She taught me to have grace under
pressure, when to be forceful and when to be silent. She took care of me emotionally as she
would her own daughter, and to that I am forever grateful and sad that now I have two
wonderful Mothers that have left me. We will miss Regina as I know many of you reading this
will too at every tournament from Nationals, State and County… we will look for her presence.
We will
… miss her with all our hearts
…wish for her eternal peace, and
…pray for her lessons of leadership to bless us!
As you may or may not know, October is National
Breast Cancer Awareness Month. To show our support
for this important cause, the Florida State USBC
Women’s Bowling Association will be having a Bowl for
the Cure Mail-O-Graphic Singles Tournament.
Proceeds from this tournament will go to the Susan G.
Komen Foundation and will be used to support
research, provide screenings, assist with treatments,
and provide financial and social support to millions battling breast cancer. The cost is $10.00
dollars per person, which includes a $5.00 donation to the Susan G. Komen Foundation and
$5.00 going into the prize fund. The tournament will be held during the Team Event at the
Florida State USBC Women’s Bowling Association Tournament (May 2 - June 7, 2015). There will
also be t-shirts sold for $20.00 and a raffle drawing for a beautiful basket to be given away at
the state meeting held in May 2015. Through the support of this organization, we can help to
eliminate this aggressive disease and fulfill a promise of a world where no woman or man has
to fear breast cancer ever again.

A Striking New Trend for Women’s League
During the first night of women’s league, I surveyed the group of ladies that have committed
their Wednesday’s to league bowling. Looking around, I wondered where the Generation Y’s
were. The Y’s are somewhere in between “set in their ways” and “anything goes.” Some Y’s
are buried in their phones right along with generation Z and some are more traditional.
Traditional Y’s are the ones that utilize all the glories of electronics for work and moderate
amounts of entertainment. They have an appreciation for family time and have no problem
putting their phones down to enjoy the company of others. This group is the next generation of
female bowling.
Our women’s league has dwindled down to 40 women. Participation across the country has
rapidly declined over the past 10 years. Without the next generation adopting bowling as a
part of their culture how much longer will our ladies nights last? How many days a year will we
miss out on the camaraderie of sharing stories and strikes with fantastic ladies?
I’ve heard all the excuses of why women don’t bowl. They are too busy, too tired and don’t
have the money. Bowling just isn’t a priority. Why can’t we change that? Why can’t bowling
with your friends and spending a few hours away from home, be something that every woman
makes a priority? There are many Baby Boomers and Generation X ladies that have made
bowling a part of their culture. They show up every week and enjoy the time they share with
friends at their local bowling center. It’s past time to encourage the next generation of women
to bowl. Everyone finds time and even a few dollars to do something fun. Bowling with a
group of supportive, fun women should be that something.
ALL female bowlers have a responsibility to secure the future of women’s leagues. If we do not
invite every generation to join now then the few will turn into none in the blink of an eye. Let
us challenge ourselves to invigorate our leagues with fun and positivity. Let every center be full
of women cheering and high fiving! Celebrate Birthdays and all the small victories in life. Let
our smiles and laughter be contagious. Let us recreate the days where all generations of
women enjoy bowling. Commit to strike up a new trend today!

With great anticipation, we welcome another bowling season. Like our favorite TV series, we
schedule our week’s activities around this time to be with friends and enjoy the common love
for the game. There is something about bowling that mimics the rule of life, with time you gain
experience and understanding of the game, how to handle the unexpected split or adjust when
the lanes for the tournament are oiled completely different than what you’ve practiced on. It
seems these experienced bowlers, just as those who have weathered the storms of life, take
the splits with ease and delicacy, seeming unshaken by the sudden bad predicament. This sport
is one of the few I’ve noticed that allow for those of a golden generation to mentor the young,
not only in bowling but soon in all areas of life, from falling in love to saving marriages. Bowling
leagues remain one of those few areas left where the young can still learn from those more
experienced and watch as those that have done it for decades continue to do so in with such
class and grace.
For those bowlers that do choose to come back, the options are numerous for the occasion or
theme they can sign up under, from the general women’s, men’s and the ever fun mixed
leagues to work leagues and finally to those more about letting loose and having a drink with
the strike. On whichever one you feel more at home with, you can always find those bowlers,
who have come back whether it was sunshine or thunderstorms.
The bowler’s in the Emerald Coast USBC Association can start off young as we have numerous
children’s leagues which allow for our children to grow up and have fun while making friends in
a sport that can be with them for a lifetime.
West Volusia USBC Bowling Association
Jennie Mero
Good news from West Volusia. This year, in the 2014 USBC Open and USBC Women’s
Tournament, West Volusia produced some good bowling. (Not from me though!) In the
Women’s tournament, Old Friends #2 placed 2nd in the Ruby Division Team Event. Sarah
Brown, Donna Bruno, Sheila Young and Tiffany Smith rolled a combined total of 2192. Smith
placed 6th in Div 3 All Events with a 1688 total. In the Open tournament, Peter Colangelo placed
2nd in the Classified Division. Colangelo rolled scores of 195, 279 and 188 for a 662 scratch
series.
Local tournaments are in the process of being organized for the year. The local board is under
new Presidency, William Waldren. (Yes, Liz’s husband.) Bill has been on the local board for
many years. Also, our new Association Manager, Harold Harper, brings a lot of new
suggestions. He hails from Miami-Dade County.
Another thing new and exciting is happening. Sunshine Lanes is getting a facelift. Expect it to
be done by the 1st of the year. It will include a new restaurant (Johnny Rockets), new bar and
completely renovated restrooms. A lot of other things will be happening too. Hopefully most
of you all will get to see it for the 20 Year Club tournament.

As we begin our new year, I was elected as President so I have a lot more duties to make this a
successful year. We have a new Sgt. of Arms, not new to our board; Juanita Montsinger.
Christina McCombs, director was elected into the 4th VP position, and James Strickler elected
from 4th VP to 2nd VP. New directors elected - Yolanda Houston, Valerie Doss, John LaFond,
Leigh Rayner & Lee Brown.
Our first Vice President, Wanda Rotloff was appointed as a Director on the Florida State USBC
WBA board. Congrats to Wanda, she has wanted this opportunity to serve on the FS USBC WBA
board for a long time. We wish her all the best for the next 3 years.
We are in the process of getting our leagues sanctioned and our new awards out to the adult
and youth bowlers.
We have had one tournament, The Maddie Dalrymple Pins over Average Youth/Adult
Tournament in August. It is a fun tournament. We have two divisions, 11 & under & 12 and
over. 11 and under – 1st place – Pierce Johnson/Michael Wetheral, 2nd place – Renee
Favell/Jim Strickler, 3rd place – Grace Holbrook/Kristi Holbrook. In the 12 & over – 1st place
Chloe Barber/Lee Brown, 2nd place – Stephen DeLong/Mike Crosby, 3rd place – Denver
Huett/Roy Johnson, 4th place – Steven Keller/Eric Kartlick, tied for 5th place – Alec
Johnson/James Strickler and Alex Brodsky/Joe Minarik. We do brackets for the youth & adults,
if the adult wins their bracket, the winnings go into their youths SMART scholarship.
We have another youth/adult tournament the weekend of October 4 & 5th, and hoping for a
good turnout.
The following weekend we head to the Florida State USBC BA Jamboree in Sarasota. Myself and
Wanda Rottloff, James Strickler, Christina McCombs and Teresa Larabee will be attending. Look
forward to seeing everyone.
A few weeks after that, is our 61st Annual St. Petersburg Women’s Classic Tournament. We
have a deadline date of October 27th, so if you are reading this before that date and want to
come out and participate, please get your entry in as soon as possible. Our website is
www.gcusbc.org double click on tournaments, and the entry form and host hotel are on our
site. We hope to see bowlers who come out every year, and hope to see some new faces.
On December 7 at Seminole Lanes, we will be having our first in a long time, 500 club
tournament. It has been many years since we have had a Gulf Coast USBC 500 club, and we are
looking forward to starting it up again.
And 2015 looks like it will be filled with our BVL, city championships, Strikers Club, Senior
Doubles, our annual meeting and the convention, in Omaha, NE and that weekend we return
will be the first weekend of the 2015 Florida State USBC WBA Annual Tournament.
We are preparing now for the 2015 Florida State USBC WBA Annual Tournament. It will be in
our area next year, and look forward to seeing all the ladies from all over the State of Florida
here at Seminole Lanes & Liberty Lanes. Don’t forget your entries are due on February 1st
paying the regular fees, entries received after Feb 1 – Mar 1, 2015 requires an additional $20
fee. We look forward to a great tournament.

As you can see, we are going to be very busy. Thankfully we added four more people to our
board to help us; two directors- Margo Buzzard (we missed you) and Steven Graham as well as
two auxiliary members- Blanche Bronwit and Brian Hough. So, if you want to reach any of us
you might as well call Bird Bowl, our home away from home…….
Speaking of tournaments, we would like to thank all of you that helped to put on the State
Tournament this past May. It was a wonderful experience and we know that this year’s
tournament will be just as good. We also loved the luncheon where our own, Patty Nevers,
was named the recipient of the Pilar Cohalla Award.
It is with great pride that we announce the final figure that was raised for the Susan G. KomenBowl For the Cure Charity – drum roll please … It was $7, 232.66! As mentioned above, our
tournament is scheduled to occur in about another 3 weeks and we plan to make even more
money this year.
Even though we (still) only have one bowling center serving Dade and Monroe County, we don’t
take our bowlers for granted. Our continuing commitment to them includes having more
pictures of those that have reached a milestone in their bowling on our Facebook page.
Whether it is for a 300 game, their first 200, or even an all spare game, we will highlight the
event. We are also taking on the expense of giving out awards for all of the scores that USBC
previously gave. Finally, we are in the process of completing our new web site. Our newest
director, Steven, is a computer whiz and he has been working hard to make it the best. You can
find us at gmusbc.com and we invite you to check us out.
As this newsletter is being processed, we are getting ready for our annual Awards and Hall of
Fame Banquet. It is at this event that we will honor our Adult and Youth Bowlers of the Year,
our Top “8” winners, and our three new Hall of Fame members. Our Adult Bowlers of the Year
are Chris Szymanski and Caitlin Graham, while our Youth Bowler of the Year is Alex Yaniz.
Coincidentally, they were also the first place finishers in the Top “8” Tournament. Those
bowlers coming in second place were Sean Mattison, Graciela Dube, and Charlie Forero. In the
girls competition Tori Burstein came in first followed by Kristin Smith. We will be inducting 3
people into our local Hall of Fame: Glenda Beckett for Exceptional Service, Ryan Boyd for
Exceptional Bowling Ability, as well as Laurie Gordon for Exceptional Bowling Ability. Glenda,
our current Association Manager/Director, was elected due to all of the work she has done for
our association over the last 12 years. Glenda also gets involved on State and National levels,
always representing us in a very positive manner. Her work ethic, diligence and creative ideas
have helped our association grow and enabled us to fully enjoy the sport of bowling. Ryan,
whose award will be given posthumously, was a very accomplished bowler. During the time he
competed as a Dade County bowler he attained a 236 yearbook average and bowled (28) 300’s
and (12) 800’s in addition to earning many bowling tournament titles. Laurie, currently a
Broward resident, also had many accomplishments as a Dade County bowler. Her highlights
include a high average of 208 with numerous honor scores such as multiple 279 games and 700
series. Her highest was a 779 which was the best in the State of Florida for that particular year.
Congratulations to all of them on their fine performances.
If any of you are planning on bowling in some “away” tournaments we strongly advise you to
travel as a group. Some of our ladies love to do this because it is fun and there is safety in
numbers. As a member of the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Bowling Balls” I can attest to that
fact. Bowling together, dining as a group, telling stories, and playing games make it a total
experience. We usually end up laughing the whole weekend, in fact some of us laugh so hard
that tears run down our legs….Of course it all “Depends” on the topic of discussion.
Well, that’s all for now. Have a great year, and as always- may the good scores be yours.
Orange Belt USBC Bowling Association
Diana Eichlin
The Orange Belt USBC Bowling Association finished the 2013-14 bowling season with its annual
meeting and awards luncheon on May 10.
Most notable was the installation of two new members to the OBBA Hall of Fame. Inducted
were Director Georgia Kovacs for Meritorious Service, given for the dedication and
commitment she has given to serving as the association’s Ways and Means Chairman. She buys,
stores, catalogues and hauls around all the numerous items sold to raise money for our
association. She tirelessly works the tables, sells the tickets and rounds up workers when we
host events, such as the men’s state open tournament and the youth Pepsi tournaments, in
addition to our own tournaments. We couldn’t do it without her! Congratulations Georgia.
Georgia also was honored this year by the Orange Belt’s Youth Association as the Outstanding
Volunteer of the Year for her work being in charge of the ways and means tables at both their
local youth tournament and the Pepsi youth tournament they hosted this year.
Elected to the Hall of Fame for Bowling Achievement was Allison Cale. Allison was a member of
a very successful bowling team at Florida State University when she was in college. She has
continued her bowling success as a member of our association, winning many tournament
titles. She concluded the 2013-14 bowling season with a 216 average in the Ladies Invitational
Scratch League and has bowled at least a 200 average for the past 10 years. (I’d like to just get a
200 game!) Congratulations to Allison. Keep up the awesome bowling!
At the annual meeting, Association Manager Frank Collins reported a 3% loss in our
membership last year. We had 3,121 members in 2013-14, down 102 members. Our association
includes eight bowling centers in Polk, Highlands and Hardee counties, however, in May 2014,
Coz’s Place in Lake Placid closed its doors. Many bowlers in Lake Placid are now driving to
Heartland Bowl in Sebring.
The OBBA’s website this past year also experienced some difficulties, with gremlins hacking us
on several occasions. We have since contracted with a new provider and are in the process of
updating our information. The website is www.obbafl.com. It has a new look and plans are to
include entry forms for tournaments as well as tournament winners and other association
news. The great thing about our new website is we now have “Mail Chimp” which allows us to
email our members to tell them when new information has been posted.
Speaking of communicating with our bowlers, this summer 1st Vice President Scooter Wadley
and his wife Carol Wadley, Director, launched the OBBA Facebook page: USBC Orange Belt
Bowling Association. We only have 286 “friends” so far, but every week we are adding more
and more. It’s been a wonderful way to post announcements, upcoming events, league
openings and chat about bowling. Any member can post comments. We are just now beginning
to promote our Facebook site and hope it will continue to grow as a way to “meet and talk”
with our members. If you’re on Facebook, stop by and “friend” us!
October is shaping up as an incredibly busy month.
 The Highlands County Women’s 500 Club starts off with its annual meeting and 9-pin
No-Tap Members Only Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 5, at Heartland Bowl in Sebring.
 OBBA board members and other OBBA bowlers will be in attendance at the Florida
USBC Jamboree in Sarasota Oct. 11-12. Delegates are Tomi Burns, President; Frank
Collins, Association Manager and Director; Scooter Wadley, 1st Vice President;
Dianne Smith, 3rd Vice President; and Sandy Russum, Director.
 A 9-Pin No-Tap “For the Tatas” Tournament is planned for 1pm Sunday, Oct. 19, at
Heartland Bowl in Sebring. It’s a singles handicap tournament, and the entry fee is
$25 per person with $5 going directly to the Beverly J. Wright Memorial Foundation
dedicated to supporting breast cancer research. There will be door prizes, raffles,
etc. For information, call Heartland Bowl at 863-382-2643.
 Members of the Polk County 500 Club, Highlands County Women’s 500 Club and
Phoenix Mixed 500 Club are making plans to attend the Florida 500 Club’s 25th
Annual Doubles & Singles Tournament Oct. 17-18-19 at Sawgrass Lanes in Sunrise.
The United 500 Club of Broward County is hosting the tournament meeting and
banquet.
 The Fourth Annual Orange Belt “Bowlers to Veterans Link” (BVL) Doubles
Tournament is scheduled for 2pm Sunday, Oct. 26, at Orange Bowl Lanes in
Lakeland. Charities Committee Chairman and OBBA 4th Vice President Dianne Smith
is in charge of this popular event. It is open to youth, adults, all skills and any
combination. Entry fee is $20 per person, with $8 of every entry going directly to
BVL. Monies won by youth bowlers go to the scholarship program.
In other news, we wish a speedy recovery to one of our newest directors, Dee Walsh, who
hobbled into our September board meeting on crutches. She had been bowling the night before
and dislodged her hip joint. As we hear it, she didn’t fall and she finished the game. However, it
seems her hip is out of joint and may require therapy or surgery down the road. She may be
facing a six-week to a six-month recovery. As everyone knows, you can’t keep a bowler out of
the game for long! We hope to see her back on the lanes real soon!
Congratulations also are in order to Michael Ducat, owner of Cypress Lanes in Winter Haven.
Ducat received the 2014 Victor Lerner Memorial Medal and was inducted into the Bowling
Proprietors Association of America Hall of Fame at the BPAA’s June Expo. He has been a BPAA
member since 1988 and served as its president from 2000-2002 and was its interim executive
director from 2001-2002.
In winding down, we look forward to seeing our friends from around the state at the Florida
State USBC WBA Senior Women’s Tournament the first two weekends in November in Tavares.
(If you haven’t sent your entry in yet, the deadline is October 15.)
And the Orange Belt USBC Association is PROUD to be selected as the host site for the 2015
Florida State USBC WBA Senior Women’s Doubles and Singles Tournament. It will be held the
first two weekends in November at Orange Bowl Lanes in Lakeland.
It’s going to be a busy bowling season! Good luck bowling, have fun and stay healthy and safe!
Greater Pensacola USBC Association
Denise Myers
All in the day of an Association Officer and Director:
It’s a warm August summer night. Walking slowly down the beautiful white beaches of
Pensacola. I could watch the water for hours lap against the shoreline, but wait, there is
something I am forgetting to do. I sit down to think…what is it that I should be doing? Hmmm,
oh my gosh, there is our Fall Workshop and yearbooks need to get completed. The Adult AllStar dinner is on Friday, August 8th, the Youth All-Star bowling party is on Saturday, August 9th.
Need to get plaques made and make dinner arrangements for five men and five women for the
all-star team, five men and five women for the senior (ages 50+) all-stars and five men and five
women for super senior (ages 65+) all-stars, not to mention all the board members so they can be
installed into office. As for the youth, five boys and five girls ages 11 and under, five boys and
five girls ages 12-15 and five boys and five girls ages 16 and up need to have plaques made. I
need to make sure that New Liberty Lanes, who for the second year, volunteered to host and pay
for the youth to have a buffet and bowling party, is ready for us.
That can’t be all we need to do. Oh, NO, in a couple of weeks leagues will be starting. Need to
make sure all centers know who their lane reps are, need to make sure all the lanes are certified,
not to mention getting my own equipment ready to hit the lanes. Need to finalize the tournament
schedule for the season…oh and let’s not forget to get all the board members to take their board
certification test through USBC because we have Performance Standards we would like and try
and exceed. Suddenly I come back to reality and realize the tide has risen and the water is
almost upon me. Hmm, hopefully that isn’t a symbol of how this year will go. Flashing past us
all without being able to attain our goals and being drowned in the day-to-day tasks without
being able to stop and enjoy our accomplishments, friendships, and family.
The Greater Pensacola board members signed their Code of Ethics and Commitment to Serve the
Greater Pensacola USBC Association paperwork, pledging to make this year better than the last.
We are getting ready to kick-off this season with our first tournament being the Seniors Doubles
& Singles Tournament October 18th & 19th.
We welcome all our friends from around Florida to come to the panhandle and visit or checkout
our web site: www.greaterpensacolausbca.com
Hope all of you bowl an honor score or two, enjoy your leagues, and encourage all bowlers to:
KNOCK THEM DOWN
SOUTH BREVARD USBC WBA
Charlotte Mateo
Well how is everyone? It is our sincere hope that everyone had a great summer whether you
bowled or took some time off. Whatever the case welcome back!
As of this publishing our new season (08-01-14) we have sanctioned 8 leagues with 251
members. We are definitely off to a slow start. Some of the secretaries have been delayed in
sending them in and this may result in our association getting a poor grade from USBC
(Association Standard Performance).
We found out that some of our ladies did very well at the Florida State Tournament!!
Team: “Funtastics Ladies” ended up in 6th place: They were Debbie Bunk, Alicia Mateo,
Charlotte Mateo, and Debby Theisen.Doubles: Lori Mudd & Carol Becker impressed us with
their 9th place finish.Singles: Lyn Cavanaugh (44th), Ruth Barry (101st), Anna Cox (handicap-128th
& scratch-12th), Peggy Ellis (128th) and Lori Mudd (135th).
All Events: Peggy Ellis (32nd), Lori Mudd (93rd), Debbie Tommer (99th) and Donna Mauro (140th).
Congratulations to all our ladies and we look forward to our ladies doing well again in 2015.
Our last fundraiser for the 2013-2014 season was another Bunko game on July 19th. It was the
most successful yet! Our thanks go out to our chairperson Carol Douthett and her committee
on a job well done. We had 64 participants and gave away some excellent prizes to the winners.
Those who attended were already asking when the next one will be, so our board decided at
our first meeting that perhaps we should increase our events by having three instead of the
two. We are looking into perhaps having them in January, May, and October. We will have to
keep them separate from any other events in our County, but I do believe we will be able to
accomplish that without any trouble.
Our annual joint leadership workshop with FSCBA, where we issue out the packets of
information to the officers, was held on August 9th and we had 17 interested people attend.
Our attendance was the same as last year. Since USBC has set guidelines for us we will still
continue to provide this workshop. We have found that our Facebook page has helped and we
hope that with our new Mail Chimp capabilities we will be able to reach even more of our
bowlers with upcoming events. We have some secretaries out there who really need some
help, however they just can’t seem to make it to our workshop so we are going to try to meet
and greet them this fall.
Our first event every year is our free bowling clinic, which we provide every September, and the
attendance was better than last year. It appears that using Mail Chimp along with our
Facebook seems to have reached more of our bowlers who were very excited to attend. We
had 32 people (which is almost double from last year) who attended on September 13 th at
Harbour Center Lanes in Melbourne. Thank you to Betsy Davis and Bette Stift again for
providing all the wonderful tips to our bowlers.
Our local 500 Club had their first of two tournaments on September 27 th at Shore Lanes Palm
Bay. They had 27 participants. According to their secretary, Shirley Mattley, that seemed to be
an improvement from the last one. We as leaders in the bowling community will continue to
dedicate our support to any and all of these local groups to keep the sport alive and growing.
One of the upcoming events between this newsletter and our next will be our Silver Hair
Tournament (October 25, 2014) at Harbour Center. Also, we will be conducting our BVL
donations drive in the month of November and we will be going around to all our leagues for
their support. In our league secretary’s packets we provided some suggestions on how they
could help out. Our new chairperson, Alicia Mateo, will be striving to increase our donations
even more than last year (congratulations goes out to chairperson Doreen Mezzacappa for a
great job) and with the help of all our board members we should be able to accomplish this for
our veterans.
In the December issue we will let you know how these events succeeded. December is usually a
very quiet month for us; however we may still do something for our bowlers which we will
decide at our board meeting in October.
As far as high scores this past summer, we have had a few that are very deserving of
recognition.
We had a high game of 287 by Dawna Hoff; Cheryl Berger and Jennifer Hannum both had 278
games. High Series this summer went to Dawna Hoff with a 747 along with Jenn Sarko (713) and
Dorene Crickon (710). Great shooting ladies! Keep it up!
We have come to realize that there are several ladies in our association that have participated
at the National level in many of those tournaments. Our first recognition goes to Barbara
Alexander, whose first tournament was in 1954 when she was but a young 21 year old. This
lady was asked by a close friend to go and she got so hooked that she has been attending ever
since. After extensive discussions with Barbara, she found past photos and other memorabilia
that shows she participated in at least 38 tournaments; but knows that she has attended almost
every year since her first one. After providing that information to USBC, this year at the 2015
tournament she will be awarded her plaque stating that accomplishment. How about that for
the love of the sport! Congratulations Barbara!
Well this is all for now, and it is our sincere hope that all of you continue to have a wonderful
and prosperous season with lots of high scores. See you on the Lanes!

I would like to thank all of the authors that sent in articles. This is the first time that I have read
every word of the newsletter and I realize how much I have missed! The articles are all great.
Please make sure that your association has selected a Publicity Chairperson and have submitted
it to me. Remember that anyone can submit an article. It doesn't have to be from the Publicity
Chairperson. This is my first endeavor as an editor and I hope that you all enjoy reading it.
